Great place to shoot in the outdoors. Super helpful and friendly staff and a good mix of rentals. Some rentals are a bit worn (I'm looking at you SR-22!!!) .22 metal gallery is fun to plink. It was fun and worth the money to shoot the .50 cal. If you haven't done it, I would recommend it. It's worth the $10 a round to see a bright orange clay turn to dust. read more

Great range. Been a few times - decided to sign up for a membership. Staff members are good people. Easy going. Tell you what you need to know and not much else. All the folks on the range I've encountered have observed the rules of firearm safety. Noticed a few family's and parents do a good job of watching the kids. Prices aren't too bad. Came here once with a friend and decided that this would be a great place for a Bachelor Party and a day of hanging out with the groomsmen. 1st Visit: 1 Day Range Fee, 1 Rental, 1 Ammo, and 1 Target: $51.00; Yes guys rental and ammo here are very hiked up and you are required to use their ammo with their guns... Kinda makes sense. But for occasional shooters who don't own any guns, I guess this is OK. 2nd Visit: Brought the gang for a start to the bachelor party, and spent $229 for 5 people. There were other bachelor parties there as well. This seems to be pretty nice place to host one. We bought 5 Range fee passes, and shot a shotgun, AR-15, and Glock with 5 targets. Spent about 2.5 - 3 hours here, and ended up getting BBQ in the town nearby. I think some of the traps for the shotgun malfunctioned and instead of only one flying out 2 flew out. But they compensated us for that with a free rental. While ammo prices may be way overpriced, the staff was super friendly. At least we didn't shoot a finger off or anything. read more

The bachelor party wanted to shoot some guns during this trip and Lone Star Gun Range it was. We pulled up and there was plenty of parking, it was towards the end of the day so it wasn't that crowded either. The staff was super friendly, very knowledgeable, recommended guns, and even suggested we try a different gun than the AK we wanted (which he was right). No matter your experience level, you need to read their rules and sign their waiver. When we choose our gun, it was our first time shooting some of them, so they explained exactly how to use it. When we got to the range, I was nervous to ask people for a cease fire. I didn't want to be that guy. After the first time, everyone was friendly and happily stepped away from their gun so we could put up our target. Fast forward a couple of hours after trying 4 different guns, and we had a blast. It was time to go and we were getting hungry so we asked them if they had any recommendations on places to eat. They recommended Black's BBQ and that was probably the best BBQ we had on our trip. read more

One of my favorite ranges. Location=great. Short drive. People=super love that its outdoors. Nothing negative about this range.

Call first and see how busy they are. I didnt and ended up regretting it. I used the rifle range in an attempt to zero my new scope. Bad idea again. Too busy. There were 10 lanes and 8 frames with cross fire going on, or something. Didnt appear to be an RO around to ask. Idunno. There was definitely a lack of organization because people were showing up and jumping on lanes when others who were waiting got skipped over. I'll go back but not to zero a new scope. Hard to concentrate when GI Joe's 7.62mm exhaust is hitting you in the side of the head from 4' away. So yeah I do like the place but not the crowds. My lack of preparation determined my experience and had zero to do with the facility itself. Wear mud boots if you go after any rain events. Read the note on the pic nic tables, people! No Rifles or Ammo on the table! No Means No! These folks walked up as I was sitting there, read the sign, and blatantly ignored it. They put 4 ammo cans, and three large rifle cases over the ENTIRE table. smdh.... (This is an honest review of my experience. I am in no way bashing anyone specifically) read more

We had such a great time here today, Russell and Mike were really great help, I have been to several ranges in other states but lone star is one of the best ones I have been to. When we walked in we were greeted promptly and asked to read their safety protocols, once that was complete we went to rent some shotguns to go trap shooting, there was a large party of people there so Russel and Mike recommended we start with the trap and work our way back to the pistol range so that everything ran smoothly, they were very knowledgeable with all the questions we had and really knew their stuff. Once we picked our package they showed us how to properly handle and load the weapon even if you know how to already which to me shows that safety is a priority to them and that's great, once we went out to the range Mike got everything going for us and let us do our thing, we had a great time doing the trap shooting then moved on to the pistol range after we selected our guns. Everyone there is very respectful of each other regardless of skill level, when someone says cease fire everyone puts down their guns and backs up, again keeping safety a priority there for everyone, overall if you are near Lockhart Texas make Lone star a priority and take the time to go shoot the guns are well maintained the people are real friendly and the environment is great! read more

Great place to practice shooting and for various classes they host. They do go out of their way to provide a safe environment for their guests and staff. As always at a gun range. You can not send your child downrange to retrieve a target during live fire. Sadly, some do not care for the safety of others and were asked to leave. These people have big hearts. So much, that they help the animals (dogs and cats) that are constantly being abandoned nearby. Go out and show your support for these wonderful people. read more

Highly recommend this gun range to anybody. It's been a go to for me for about a year and a half now. $15 bucks to shoot ALL day, Can't beat it. Weather 22lr, long distance rifle, pistol or skeet they have got it all. From 15 yards to 100 yards. Staff is also very friendly and helpful. In the year since I wrote my original review, I've visited Lone Star Gun Range more times than I can count. They installed a second electronic clay thrower for shotguns, which makes the shotgun course much more fun. As I read the other reviews for LSGR on Yelp, I couldn't help but feel like I should update my review to provide some additional context to the issue raised by other reviewers regarding neighbors. There are not any neighbors within earshot of this gun range. The house that's closest (the 200 yds mentioned by another reviewer?) appears to be owned by the family who operates Lone Star Gun Range. "Billingsley" is painted on the mailbox of that house. The road is in perfect condition for a gravel road- no washboarding or potholes that would require a passenger car to travel at less than 45 mph. Matt Billingsley, the owner, provided a well-written response to this criticism last month. Tragically, less than a week after his post to Yelp, he was killed while operating earth-moving equipment to provide additional range space for visitors (http://www.sanmarcosrecord.com/obituaries/x357073402/Joseph-Matt-Billingsley). He will no longer be able to refute the disinformation spread in these reviews about Lone Star Gun Range being a nuisance to neighbors. Lone Star Gun Range remains an excellent facility for target or clay shooting practice. If you are someone who does NOT enjoy the crazy loud indoor ranges (like me), then you will be sure to love this hidden pocket of 2nd-amendment-come-and-take-it goodness! I haven't gone to many gun ranges so my limited experience makes me a fan here. It has a variety of areas for handguns, rifles and shotguns and they are big on safety which is nice. The guys that work here are friendly with a little snarky and a whole lot of arrogant thrown in but my gun jammed pretty good and we had to ask for help and by golly my gun got unjammed with a warning that she's a high maintenance piece and doesn't like the cheaper bullets. You can rent guns also and buy ammo here but it is pricey and $15 for a day pass means I would return as it is not as intimidating as an indoor range is and people were pretty chatty as a whole here and it was a nice experience for me since this was my third time going shooting. read more

Came here from our buddies bachelors since he wanted to shoot rifles and guns that aren't available out in gun ranges in San Francisco, California. Super fun and definitely a great experience to shoot AR15s and AK47s which are some of my favorite guns! Plus, at the end of our day we got to shoot the .50 caliber and oh my! This is a very nice range with several different firing areas to accommodate both rifles and handguns. The shop has a good selection of rental weapons so you can try out something new, and there are plenty of targets to choose from if you didn't bring your own. Ammunition is also available, but I didn't get a feel for the prices or what calibers they offer. They also teach concealed carry classes on a dedicated firing line. A couple of minor gripes: They don't allow handguns on the rifle range, which is kind of a pain in the butt if you want to fire both types of weapon. Also, the firing lines are not controlled, meaning you don't get ceasefires at regular intervals. Depending on how many people are shooting, it may take a while before you can go downrange to inspect or repair your targets. My favorite thing about coming to this range is that you can duck into nearby Lockhart for a barbecue lunch afterward. Check 'em out! read more

Came here the other day with my boyfriend to try and find the best handgun That would be the best fit for me . It was about a 40 or so minute drive from Austin . The first thing I noticed when we got here was the friendliness of the staff . The two men working inside were very nice but also quite professional and really laid out the rules clearly . The second great thing about the range is how affordable it is . I rented two different guns and the first one you rent is $10 and every one after is $5! ( not including ammunition of course ) . General range fee was very reasonable and included the entire day , not just by hour . The best part about this range in my opinion is that it is outdoors . I personally love outdoor ranges and so that was a deal breaker for me . Even on a Friday the range was not uncomfortably crowded which was wonderful . They have a few different areas so that helped . Overall I would for sure recommend this range and would love to come back ! read more

Lone Star Gun Range gets 5 stars from me! What can I say that hasn't been said already? As a recent transplant from NYC, I was eager to go to the gun range asap! The drive out to Lockhart was both smooth and scenic, I got to take in the lovely Texas farmlands and stopped to take some great pictures. Once we arrived to the range itself, I was expecting to pay the usual $10-12 the hour I'm used to paying back home. Do NOT misunderstand when they tell you the price... ITS FOR THE WHOLE DAY!!! I couldn't believe my ears and happily paid the fee, bought some targets and was off on my way. During weekdays its not as packed as weekends (that's a given anywhere), so when I was there on a Sunday it was rather busy on the gun ranges so I decided to try out their archery range. It's small and impromptu, with only a few hay bales and a single target hog but somehow for me it only gave me more of that at home, country feeling that the rest of the range gives. All the regulars at the rifle range and pistol range were kind, patient and informative with this New Yorker in their midst. I felt very welcome on my first day and have at all my subsequent visits. At Lone Star you wont get any frills or tacticool garbage like other ranges. What you get here is what you need: a wonderful, friendly staff and a great place to shoot under the big blue skies of Texas. Pros: Awesome place to shoot, out in the open, good prices. Used my bf's AR15 and was pleased with the experience. Cons: shooting stalls are pretty close to each other, some of the mags from the AR15 we were using were cutting close into the space of the person next to us so we had to scoot up a lot so it wouldn't hit him which was inconvenient. We chose a .22 revolver & rifle w/ scope. This allowed us to go to the .22 only range, where we shot at metal targets. None of us wanted to have to walk down & retrieve/switch out paper targets and rely on everyone else to ceasefire while we did so. Our group spent a few hours there & paid about $150 total. Me and my friend flew down to Texas on vacation and thought it'd be cool to go to a gun range. We had never touched a real gun before, let alone shoot one. Luckily, after a long search through various other gun ranges on the internet, we stumbled upon LSGR and settled on going there. Couldn't have been better. Located off of a long dirt path, the range is a well hidden jewel of Lockhart. We walked onto the range to the sounds of gun shots ringing through the air and knew we were in the right place. The staff greeted us kindly and were both friendly and entertaining. We weren't looking for a class, just to shoot something, and they gave us just that. They briefed us on how to handle the gun safely, answered our questions, and we were well on our way. It was quick and easy. Price wise, this place was perfect. If you've never been to LSGR before, you are charged a $5 first time registration fee, added to the $12 per person fee to shoot FOR THE WHOLE DAY. I emphasize that because I had been turned off by all the hourly prices I kept finding at other ranges. $12 for the day was a deal. In addition to that, it's $10 to rent a gun, and $5 for every gun after that. You also had to buy the ammo for the gun, which can vary. Their selection of guns was nice, and we both ended up paying about $30 each, shooting 150 rounds with 2 rifles. All in all, we both had a nice time and I would definitely recommend LSGR to anyone who has an interest in shooting firearms and has never shot anything before. I liked this place! Let me address a few things I saw on this app. So for the people complaining about having to read out the statements on the paper, you all realize you all are shooting guns right? The information on the waiver is vital. And if you believe that shooting a gun is something to not take seriously you're wrong. I was a first time shooter and I was appreciative of the time they took to explain everything to me. I would say maybe the bad comments here are people going on bad days for the workers, but the two people I got the chance to talk to were very enjoyable and informative. I've tried several ranges in my area when I moved to the Austin area, and this is the only place I've been using since 2012. The owner and staff are always great (unless you're a knuckle head and a danger to others, then they'll deal with the problem swiftly). The fee for the day is what you pay for 30 min at other places. I buy the annual package and that works out to average $2.50 / a day. Huge selection of weapons to rent if you're a new shooter and trying to figure out what weapon works best for you. They continuously keep improving and upgrading the facility. If you've never been, make sure you give them a try. read more

This was my first experience going to a gun range since moving to this area. The highlight of my families experiences while being here was just one rude comment after another. I'm talking extreme rudeness. Whoever was working the inside front check in area for-sure left his personality at home and seemed extremely grumpy towards us which definitely was not a welcoming atmosphere. The explanation of the rules they gave us were puzzling and once we asked questions we were treated as if we were idiots who couldn't understand the rules. I myself found several flaws with their sheet of paper you read and have to reiterate numbers out loud back to them. I didn't say anything though because the front desk guy was already a complete ass to my family. The gun range itself is very nice and I wish the customer service aspect of this business would've held up its end because ultimately when you make customers feel as if they are "less than" and you speak down on them with rude comments as if you are the all-knowing Godfather, it doesn't attract business. We 100% won't be back in this lifetime. Would rather take our business to a friendlier company. Other reviews seemed to have great experiences, we were hoping for the same but definitely didn't receive it. We had a great experience at the beginning of our time here. I bought 22 Long rifle ammo at this range for some more shooting fun. However, when I went inside to buy some Birdshot one employee told me the law is you have to be 21 to buy rifle or shotgun ammo. He refused to let me buy birdshot for my shotgun. As a 19-year-old, I am in fact allowed in Texas to buy shotgun ammo and felt an attack on my rights. All staff members were great except the one who refused to sell me the ammo. They should be better educated on gun laws in Texas, especially when refusing to sell ammo to an 18 or up individual. read more

Blazer brass at a dealer price is $10-$11 so MSRP is about $15 but here where you MUST use their ammo when renting is $25 a box.. cmon guys first time in Texas shooting and you're going to ruin the experience by charging $75 for 3 boxes of ammo. read more
