I really hate to leave such a bad review, but this was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. I have to say I was anticipating trying this place. I had called a few days before and made a reservation to take one of my friends out to dinner for her birthday. I had told them that I had a party of three and that I had purchased the Groupon deal (I wasn't sure if there was a set menu for it, which is why I mentioned it) and they said we would be able to order whatever we wanted and we shouldn't have any problems. When we first entered the restaurant we didn't know if there was a hostess station and there was no one there or at the bar to seat us so we were standing around for a couple of minutes until finally someone noticed us. Our waitress was probably new, so I don't blame her entirely, but she seemed like she didn't know anything about the menu or the wine list. I ordered the Lomo Saltado with shrimp and a Chicha Morada. Not only did they never did bring my Chicha Morada but my Lomo Saltada came to my table shrimp-less. I'm pretty sure this is because the waitress was not writing anything down all night. If you can't memorize an order, I rather you take more time to write it down then get it wrong. We constantly had to ask for our waters to be refilled which seemed odd since it is a very small store front and there were plenty of people working; maybe only two other parties were eating at the same time as we were. I reminded the waitress about my shrimp as soon as she put the Lomo in front of me, she was very polite, apologized and had them make it separately. I have to say I enjoyed my Lomo. I had finished half of it when my shrimp finally came to my table. The waitress assured me that it was cooked in the same style as the Lomo. I regretfully dumped the small bowl of shrimp into the rest of my food and it ruined it entirely! It was so over salted and just bad that I couldn't even finish it. I thought it'd be very rude to complain since I had already eaten a little over a half of it, so again I bit my tongue. Finally the check came and when I showed them my Groupon deal (20 dollars for 40 dollars worth of food and drink) they did not want to take it because there were only three of us and the coupon said "for four or more." On the Groupon message board for this deal, two different people had said that the coupon was used for less than four people and it hadn't even phased me since when I spoke to the waitress on the phone for the reservation she never brought it up that this would be a problem. Our waitress just kept interrupting me and saying "Just ask for your money back. It's okay. Groupon was gladly give you your money back." Frustrated and quite frankly a little embarrassed I just paid for the whole thing and wanted to get out of there. I will not be returning and quite frankly I will probably recommend people to skip over this place for there are many better Peruvian places such as Mo-Chica and Mario's who have much bigger, tastier portions and better service for less money. read more

I really wanted to like this place, especially since it's close enough to Pasadena that it could have been my go-to Peruvian joint. Unfortunately, it just fell short in a few ways. First, the good: the decor and ambiance are wonderful. I love the photographs and Peruvian artwork. The chicha morada is the best I've had anywhere. The seco, which my dinner companion ordered, was really tasty. The service is sweet and good-humored. They validate parking for the structure located on Orange. Now, the bad: the service is slow. Nice only goes so far when I'm hungry. The calamari was alarmingly greasy, as was the pollo milanesa - a poor choice of entree on my part. (Though if it's something you enjoy, they give you enough to feed three people.) The bread that came with the chimichurri sauce was dusty dry. This isn't a complaint, but the chimichurri sauce itself was spicy as a mofo, causing even my hot sauce-loving friend to down a glass of water immediately after tasting it. If you like spicy, you'll enjoy it. I thought it was good, but the creamy texture and appearance were different from what I've had at other places. I'd come back for the seco or to try the pollo ala brasa if I was in the neighborhood, but this place isn't anywhere near as good as my beloved Natalie's. read more

Pretty expensive for what it is. I don't remember paying $15 for chicken and rice at any restaurant before but I guess with all the groupons and restaurant.com gift certificates they have going on they probably felt compelled to bump up the price. Anyways, onto the food. Traditional ceviche - This was probably the best dish. (Best dish from this restaurant, but I would have to say that's really not saying much) I really liked the two types of corn they had, which was probably the only thing Peruvian about it. Lomo saltado - Was okay. Nothing special. Fries were soggy. I got a piece that wasn't drenched in sauce. Pollo Vino - Again nothing special. Taste was slightly better than lomo saltado but I can't get over how they can charge $15 for just rice and a small portion of chicken. Parinhuela soup - Lots of seafood but soup was just okay. i dont know what happened to this place, maybe it was an off day or something. When I came back to Lola's, I was surprised to see a new waitress. My last visit here was pretty good and our waitress was amazing, but for some reason I got bad vibes about this new one. I think im only giving this place 2 stars because of my last visits and the food, but honestly....the service was bad. 1. she gave us our menus and left us alone for 15 min. didnt even stop by our table to see if we were ready or not. (mind you, there was only 4 people there. and two of them were from my party) 2. she mixed up our orders. maybe she needs to write it down next time. About two more parties came in when she finally got our orders. 3. when the food finally came, there was obviously a mix up. so she told us it would be another 10 min. we were fine with that, but 20 mins passed. The rest of us we waiting for our friend to get her food. Her plate finally came....and it was not cold, but not hot either. 4. never got out waters refilled. 5. charged us for the mix up, but she fixed it, apologized, and didnt charge my friends plate. which I think, is nice of her to do. i was very understanding of it though...maybe she was tired, super busy, or just simply having a bad day. i dont know. my food was good though, dont get me wrong. but jeeze, the service was so bad, i didnt enjoy it all. There are just times in (my) life when NOTHING will do except Peruvian food. I mean there is just a 'thang' about the mixing of the indigenous and imported Japanese, Chinese, African, Spanish flavor of Peruvian criolla (creole) cuisine. I mean it is a truly unique and flavorful food genre that has something for everyone. That said, it is always a treat to find a new Peruvian restaurant and its even better to find one that has some absolutely delicious stuff to offer on its menu. THAT said...let me introduce you to Lola's Peruvian Restaurant in Glendale. Lola's is a new joint in the hippin' and a hoppin' downtown Glendale Strip of Brand Blvd, just down the street from the Alex Theatres. Although I would prefer to hear Trio Los Chamas, Dúo Huancayo or even Eva Ayllón than the cheesy Andean 'New World' music, the atmosphere is really charming and kind'a a perfect spot for a date. I haven't been but I also hear its great for an quick afternoon meal and during lunch they have a buffet that allows you to sample their many different offerings; perfect if it's your first time having peruvian cuisine. They have indoor and patio seating and the serving staff were very friendly. The highlight of the meal was an appetizer done with a GREAT twist, that I don't find often and when I do it sub par. However, Lola's does a 'Causa de Camarones' (see the pictures) that is beyond superb. 'Causa de Camarones' is alternating layers tower of crushed (not mashed) yellow Peruvian potato, shredded shrimp, and avocado topped with a bell paper mayonnaise that will literally knock your taste buds off. Not only is Lola's THE BEST 'Causa' I have ever had, I verified that they make it TO ORDER...so it's the freshest you are gonna have, save going to Lima and even then...ya know... ...and it was HUGE...and VERY filling...I could have made my whole meal around the Causa, but I wanted to try a few different things. The Cause was the CLEAR hit here...and I would go back for JUST THAT alone...but the god news, there is more. I also ordered a Peruvian Tamale, which is made in banana leafs as opposed to corn husks and have a unique flavor. Lola's were a solid 7. I also ordered the Saltado Mixto, which is basically Lomo Saltado add chicken. Now, anyone who has read any Peruvian eatery reviews I have written in the past will know that if you have never tried Peruvian food, you want a Lomo Saltado or a Saltado Mixto; as THIS dish that is at the heart an soul of Peruvian cooking, and a good indication of what that restaurant is all about. Not so in the case of Lola's. The Saltado Mixto was a generous portion and all the ingredients were clearly fresh cut and fresh made, and the meat was SO tender...oh yeah...yummy tender...and it was REALLY good (and I was hungry) but it was not the BEST Saltado I have ever had. The flavors (cilantro, soy sauce, etc) were just not as rich as I normally expect them to be. BUT...don't get me wrong...it was good and cleaned the plate. I will say that my gut feeling is that they do the more 'specialty dishes' better and focus on those... Like the seafood looks awesome as does the more pedestrian offerings like Seco, Anticuchoes, Aji de Gallina and Picarones for desert...can't believe I forgot to have Picarones...but that's for next time. They serve domestic and imported and Peruvian beer and wine and public parking (city of Glendale parking) is in the rear. It's a great date place if you want somewhere to walk around afterwards (like Westwood used to be) or if you need a hit & quit lunch that doesn't taste like it. I am going back, so stay tuned...I'm gonna work my way through the menu. read more

I gotta say this is a place that knows how to do Peruvian Food right! Being Peruvian myself, the bar has been set high for every "authentic" restaurant of this type. First off the location is quaint yet chic with its Peruvian artifact decor and dim lighting. I also think its clever that they have and Ipad you can take to your table to see the menu items on there. The lunch special is what I usually go for since the dinner definitely looks a little pricey but I think their lunch special includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert for a mere 14- 18 dollars depending on your choice of combination. Compared to other decent Peruvian restaurants that's cheap.The bread and green chili sauce spread they bring out is always fresh and the perfect starter to what ever you order. My favorite items are the choros a la criolla and the lomo or camaron saltado which is a flavorful steak fajita style creation (lomo) or shrimp (camaron) paired with potato and a side of season white rice. The marinate is juicy and delicious. Finished off with a couple scoops of Helado de Lucuma (lucuma ice cream) and you've had yourself an amazing Peruvian 3 course meal. We went to try this place because there was a groupon and it is near my boyfriend's work location. But the waitress at the restaurant refused to honor our groupon. She said that it is only valid for dinner, but the groupon did not state that anywhere in the fine print - if it had, we would've used it for dinner instead. When we mentioned that it wasn't written on the groupon deal, she even acknowledged that it wasn't in the fine print but still wouldn't give us the discount. She said that it was only intended for dinner. But I think they are using the Groupon as a way to reel in customers and then find excuses to make us pay the full amount. And for that sleezy way of running a business, I will not be returning. Also, the service there wasn't very attentive, and the ambiance of the restaurant was just okay. When we entered the restaurant, there was no one to seat us so we just sat ourselves. What bothered me was that the sun was glaring through the windows directly into my boyfriend's face, but never did the servers offer to close the curtains or even notice. Eventually someone else was seated at a table in front of that window and perfectly blocked the glare for him. Not sure if she ended up with the sun in her eyes though... The food itself was not bad but not great. If the rating was based only on the food, I would've given it 3 stars for average. But since it is based on the whole experience, including the poor service and unreasonable excuse for not accepting our groupon, I think 1 star accurately represents how I feel about this restaurant - I will not be coming back. read more

Come on! This place was the bomb!! I took a special women in my life to try some good Peruvian food. After reading a lot of the reviews I was a little concerned about the service. However, no fear as we arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday night. There were about 2 or 3 other parties there. We had the best service and the best food. I would recommend the papa a huancaina and the ceviche. I haven't had crystal beer in a long time and it tasted great. My date had wine and I had her try both the Chicha and Crystal. Nice, dark and intimate little restaurant on Brand Ave in the heart of downtown Glendale. They offer up the standard Peruvian faire that I am accustomed to. Chicken in delightful curry and garlic gravies. Lots and lots of starches....rice, potatoes and yucca. I really loved what I ordered (which is what I always order at Peruvian places ) Aji de Gallina. But, I noticed the table behind me eating the most wonderful looking presentation of Ceviche, so I'm dying to go back and check that out. This place seems new to that brand blvd, strip. I have not seen it before or I totally missed it walking by, granted I haven't been around for a few months. I must have missed the lunch buffet because it did not seem available. I saw a setup that would have looked like a buffet. Then again, usually buffet means a sacrifice on quality. Not sure what the dinner menu looks like, but the lunch menu was available. Fairy small which I thought would be a positive because that would mean specialties. Nope. I ordered the Chicha Mirada, which from the description sounded like it would be really good. Turned out to be a very syrup'ee drink that was very sweet. The bread didn't taste fresh and the cucumber sauce didn't have much of a kick. For the meal I ordered the stir fried linguini noodles with some beef, onions and peppers. I had a great time at this cute little restaurant. Had a restaurant.com coupon, so I came for dinner with my best friend ready to indulge in a full course meal. The free table bread was so cute! little baguettes warm and served with aji sauce. Ordered yuccas with huancaina sauce-- the yucas were underfried, and white looking, while the huancaina sauce was very bland. Painfully bland. I resorted to asking for more of their delicious aji amarillo sauce and ate my yucas with that instead. When I got my main course-- pollo a la parrila with fries, I was very disappointed by the taste. The chicken tasted sweet, while I was looking forward to a savory and grilled flavor. Fries were excellent, smothered in some more of that aji sauce. mmm. Had lucuma ice cream and an alfajor. Dessert was delicious. I would give this place one more try, but at the second fail, i'm out! We liked this place so much that we have returned several times and have brought several family members along to try it as well. Service is always good, all the wait stuff is is nice and helpful. They don't have a huge variety of dishes, but all the ones I've tried have been good. The ceviche is one of the dishes that we always order. The ceviche tasting is fantastic! This was my second time trying Peruvian food and it was better than my first! I've never really cared to try Peruvian food, because I am not one to venture and try new food places. My mother was in town visiting and she asked me to take her to a Peruvian restaurant. This spot was down the street from my house and that's how I came about finding it on the internet. I was surprised to find the place extra full walking in the door. (Who knew people were so crazy about Peruvian right......pfft haha) We did have a wait of 35 minutes, but it was worth every minute! Our waiter was super nice and patient with us, she gave us all kinds of first hand reviews about the menu. We ordered a ceviche as an appetizer, followed by lomo saltado for my mother and steak and pesto noodles for myself. We were more than delighted with the food as well as the customer service. We redeemed a Groupon we had bought here and really enjoyed a nice dinner experience. Yes, it is an upscale romantic setting (although most of us customers were all dressed casually.) And yes a nice place to try a bottle of wine, although we just ordered food. Definitely worth more of a splurge than we normally would pay for an everyday meal out. I was prepared for the dark "cave" atmosphere, which did not match the light cafe picture that was advertised in our voucher, but I was ready for it due to reading some reviews before arriving. Thanks Yelpers! I wanted to see if there were any dishes I should try. And we did! We ordered the causa de camarones since it was so well reviewed here. It was definitely a delicious and decadent appetizer, but not anything that blew my senses. I am however very glad that I gave it a try since it was pretty unique (and not at all too mayonaisey) and I am taking home the extras for a special treat. I've been to Choza Moma in Burbank, and this far surpassed my expectations set there. The food was fresher, more exquisitely prepared. The potatoes are not just some french fries that "accidentally fell in". They are integral to the whole meal. The ambience is classy. The service was very attentive, positive and helpful. I ordered the Loma Au Vino, and I really really enjoyed it. Hubby got the Pollo Saltado. The chicken was surprisingly tender and delicious. Potato "fries" were really good too. I know one review left a bad comment about the chicken not being cooked all the way through, but if that's the case, Lola's has definitely stepped up their game. No worries. And the decor is an A, so no complaints there either. We did have one issue in that another server rang up our credit card and charged the full amount, not the after-Groupon price, even though the bill reflected the correct amount. So please heed the warning of other Yelpers and check your credit card statement carefully before signing. When brought to the attention of our normal waitress, she processed the refund and a new charge slip with the correct amount, without further inconvenience. Prior to and despite the error, the other waitress, gave a very genuine thank you to let us know she appreciated our patronage. That kind of sincerity goes a long way with me, and that impression far outweighed her mistake. I definitely would like to go back to try some other dishes, or to order the Loma Au Vino again. MMmm...that definitely makes my favorites list. One last comment...they made all modifications for me as requested (mainly leaving off the rice...although if you eat it, it's nice for sopping up the delicious sauce...but it's not particularly on my diet, especially if I'm having potatoes too. The waitress offered me salad instead, but since the dressing had sugar I declined.) Our waitress started off our night by asking if we had any questions which allowed me to inquire about ingredients, since I am on a restricted diet. She knew the answers to almost all of them off the top of her head, and the one she had to check, she did so very cheerfully. We'll be back. At least I hope we will soon! Service was good: the girl (our waitress) was very nice and helpful. she explained us all the issues with Peruvian food. They bough us complimentary fresh backed bread with yummy Peruvian souses (similar to indian), but instead of red sparkling wine which I ordered she brought me some white wine. Food is good if you dont care about Health and carbs my BF was really happy about huge amount of potatoes, fried eggs and meat. But I didnt like it: need some fresh veggies!! The ceviche (the sampler of 3 different kinds) was super sour and incredibly strong. It came out beautifully and started out tasting really good and fresh, but the sourness of all three was overwhelming and the acidity started hurting my teeth. Between the two us, we couldn't finish the dish and just ended up loading up on the complimentary bread until the main entrees came out. (Maybe it was an off night for the ceviche, bc others on this site rave about it so much!) My bf got one of the saltado dishes which was great. Highly recommend. I got the chicken salad. (I know, I'm the idiot that ordered the salad at a Peruvian restaurant. But I was in the mood for a salad!!!) The salad was inedible. It didn't come out with the ingredients as listed in the menu bc they ran out of TWO of the ingredients. The two main ingredients that made me order the salad in the first place - I think it was pecans and dried cranberries (Shouldn't they tell you this in advance?) And the lettuce was yellow. It was seriously inedible. I played with it and ate about three bites of the green parts that I could find, and just went back to the bread and took another stab at the ceviche. I just ended up loading up on the bread. I personally did not enjoy my food, but my bf said the saltado made up for the ceviche. (And the bread was good!) The staff was nice and friendly, the atmosphere was intimate and cozy, and the red house wine was great. It's a nice "date" place if you order the right stuff. So, my gf and I had Lola's for the third and last time a couple days ago for dinner. The only reason I went here was because I had a gift certificate for this restaurant. I usually get the lomo saltado when I eat Peruvian food, but had already tried it here and it's just mediocre, so we decided to try something new. I had the chicken milanesa and my gf had the pescado al ajo con camarones. My milanesa was extremely oily and the shrimp and fish was overly salted. We had also ordered the causa de camarones, which was pretty good. Actually, the bread and dipping sauces was pretty good as well. Though it did take about 15 minutes just to get the bread and an hour to get our food. Anyhow, even though I live about 5 minutes from Lola's, I wouldn't go back. I would rather drive 15 minuted to Mario's Peruvian in Hollywood. The food is way better, less expensive and comes out quick even on a busy day.
