Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu & Self Defense - GB1 - Training with Professor Charles

Initially, I was exploring different martial arts gyms for my 3-year-old daughter. While my daughter was pretty wary and didn't want to commit, I got a really good feeling the first time we observed the class and decided to join - And my gut feeling was right! There are three things that I love most about this gym: 1. People. Everyone, from the professors/coaches to the peers, are wonderful. The professors are all super friendly, approachable, and are always great at answering questions. The peers are respectful and not overly aggressive (in a hurtful-injury kinda way), and the upper belts are always happy to give pointers when asked (or when I look desperately clueless). I'll admit that I find grappling sports extremely intimidating, but everyone at the gym is so kind that I was able to continue going despite feeling super intimidated. Also, there are so many students, but the professors always remember people's names. That's amazing! Big shout out to Professor Dana, Professor Rafael, and Professor Thiago for being awesome. 2. The environment. The physical environment is clean, but more importantly, I find the (non-physical) environment incredibly welcoming. There are areas for kids to hang out when parents are taking classes, plenty of chairs and sofa, and staff are just so, so kind and nice to the kids!! As a mom who's hoping to get her 3-yo interested in bjj, I really appreciate this set up. 3. The classes. There are morning classes, middle-of-the-day classes, evening classes, and Saturday classes. There are classes for kids, teens, adults, and FEMALES. This variety allows me to attend classes with a wonky work schedule and learn from different professors and peers. More importantly, the classes are very organized, such that when I attend classes almost randomly throughout the week, different professors are all teaching similar techniques that build off of a streamlined curriculum, and I don't feel that I must attend classes on a regular schedule (e.g., M/W at 6:30am). I also love that there are position-specific training toward the latter part of every class. It's intimidating, but I learn a lot from these practices! I guess I could go on, but I'll just say that I highly recommend this gym!

The professors clearly all have a vested interest in helping their students reach their max potential. It is a family environment, but they train hard in the correct way. I canceled the membership for my son, but they forced me to keep paying an additional 3 months. And even after those 3 months they're still charging my credit card, even though the owner, Steve, clearly stated in the email he sent me that they will no longer charge me. This is not only terrible business practice, but totally illegal, period. I'll see you in court.

Be wary of signing up here. They have a cancellation fee which will cost you three months worth of…read moreyour membership. The owner is all about money and won't make exceptions for anybody. They have an additional $30 "insurance" charge every year as well. With prices starting at $99/mo for 4 classes/month all the way up to $180/mo for unlimited, it can be extremely pricey - especially for the level of instruction you're receiving. To be honest, there is no check in system so you could just sign up for the basic package and show up for more than 4 classes a month. Nobody would check up on it. The unlimited classes are meant for students to be able to take whatever class they want. (CrossFit, Muay Thai, Boxing, Jiu Jitsu are all offered here) However, the head coaches frown upon you for straying from your core classes so there is rarely any crossover between students. Regardless of which membership package you sign up for, Capital has multiple locations, any of which you can cross train at throughout Maryland and Virginia - Alexandria, Takoma Park, Lorton, Loudoun, and Fairfax. The CrossFit program offers a good workout, but there is negligent detail in using proper technique. I would be cautious of completing a lift for the sake of time or simply to complete it. However, they do have a well equipped CrossFit area. The owner may be a Royce Gracie black belt but just take one of his classes and you'll see that things don't add up. Roll with him even! Having rolled with high level belts, a high ranking blue belt is more qualified to teach. There is more emphasis on everybody being friends (and Capital being more of a social club) than being actual training partners/improving your game. A lot of chit chat in classes with minimal attention to details and technique. Beginners are often left to be helped by other white belts. The general manager is not very pleasant to deal with and can turn potential members away just by his attitude. He is also the head striking coach but has no credentials to back this up. Beginners are thrown into class with no instruction on how to throw a proper punch or kick and expected to be able to keep up with the rest of class. Again, beginners are left to learn from beginners. The head coaches at Capital are more concerned with how they look than teaching their students sound technique and it shows with their fighters. While their facility is extremely nice and well kept, kids run rampant here and neither the staff nor the parents keep them in check. Kids are often zooming around on scooters, playing catch, toys are scattered all over or they're just running throughout the gym. For potential members checking out Capital - I recommend doing your research on the instructors and beware of the 5 star reviews here. The owner often asks his members to post reviews to boost the gym's reputation.

We found the class size and coach-to-student ratio here allowed the coaches to really watch each student, give corrections, and help them get better at their techniques. I was tired of the gym with overly aggressive classmates that would crush my ribs, being confused with a non-systematic approach to working from the fundamental techniques, and a culture that did not feel welcoming. It was hard for me to commute to the previous martial arts gym, so I had been referred from a friend to take a trial the class. Inside I met the head instructor Youness, he's a great guy who's very welcoming and has very strong values for a healthy martial arts community. He guided me towards steps to achieve the goals I wanted to tackle, answered any question without any BS, built an environment where people don't crush your ribs in your first few classes, and worked on the core fundamentals. It's a reasonable price to start since they just opened last year and are basically like private lessons (I'll take full advantage while it's like this). I highly recommend Youness's gym and for it to be a Caio Terra Affiliate because it's a regarded gym that doesn't just promote anyone.

First thing I noticed is that everything is clean, which is really important when you're training in close contact with people, and especially if you ever do any training on the ground. Next, I noticed how friendly all of the students and instructors were. The culture of the place is very welcoming. I can be a bit shy at first, so having people go out of their way to say hello and show me around was pretty great. Lastly, I want to mention the huge amount of knowledge the instructors bring to their students. For instance, the lead instructor, Tammy McCracken, is the Director of the US Women's Division for Krav Maga Global, and she's constantly going to seminars and conferences and the like to learn more about how people can defend themselves. They have created an environment where all people, regardless of size/age/ability, can train together and not feel awkward or like they don't belong. The benefits of making this your regular gym can't be understated - fitness, self defense, friendship, empowerment... the list just keeps going. Love this place!
