First thing I noticed is that everything is clean, which is really important when you're training in close contact with people, and especially if you ever do any training on the ground. Next, I noticed how friendly all of the students and instructors were. The culture of the place is very welcoming. I can be a bit shy at first, so having people go out of their way to say hello and show me around was pretty great. Lastly, I want to mention the huge amount of knowledge the instructors bring to their students. For instance, the lead instructor, Tammy McCracken, is the Director of the US Women's Division for Krav Maga Global, and she's constantly going to seminars and conferences and the like to learn more about how people can defend themselves. They have created an environment where all people, regardless of size/age/ability, can train together and not feel awkward or like they don't belong. The benefits of making this your regular gym can't be understated - fitness, self defense, friendship, empowerment... the list just keeps going. Love this place!

My son had never participated in anything like this before but as soon as he had his first class he really loved it and kept asking to continue . I like how the coaches don't treat the kids like babies and add a sense of discipline. Jake is one of the coaches there and it's really awesome to see him calling the kids by their names and supporting them throughout the class.

I'm not a great fighter at all but muay thai is something I truly love. I look forward to it at the end of the day and see it as something that gives and rejuvenates me rather than taking away from me. Anyways, I came to TAG MT during a business trip and had known about this school already from watching TAG MT youtube instructional vids. I came early and got to see the kids class. It's a great balance of technical drills but also having lots of fun as the reward. The coaches are great and the kids look up to them, fully engaged and are adorable in their big Muay Thai shorts :P Head Instructor Kru Chris Aboy has an amazing personality and teaching style. His encyclopedic knowledge and teaching methodology is phenomenal. He can read each student individually while also making adjustments to the class as a whole depending on where everyone is at with the previous drill. You don't feel left behind at all. Coach James is amazing as well leading the partner drills and demos (for both Kids + Adults). In general, Phase 1 covers fundamental techniques including movement, defense, attacks, and counters through progressive partner drills. Coaches will demo technique, then go around reading students and providing helpful corrections and explaining the reasons why. Calistechnics and shadowboxing in-between rounds really push the conditioning. Controlled sparring drills towards the end adds just enough unpredictability yet retaining safety and technique. Phase 2 builds upon Phase 1 and adds in more advanced drills, focusing on more advanced strategies and technical sparring. For seasoned nak muay, TAG offers an in-depth knowledge and well rounded in all aspects. I really love their elbow/knee/clinch game. Nothing is watered down at all. I learned a LOT of new details to improve my technique is just one session. Most importantly, I felt taken care of and safe the entire time. If you live in the DC Metro Area and are interested in learning Muay Thai, whether it's for self-defense or competition, I strongly suggest checking out TAG Muay Thai. You will learn authentic, pure hard-hitting Muay Thai at TAG, along with the humility and respect of Traditional Muay Thai.

Hidy Ochiai Karate stood out above them all! Their classes go beyond the regular karate classes that other martial arts places provide. Here, they also do Kobudo which we learned is the use of ancient weapons! Trust me, your kids will go bonkers for this class!! It's taught in an extremely safe way, but still makes the kids feel like ninja superstars! I kind of want to take it myself :D Our daughter also did the summer camp this past summer and she loved it! She came home with real calligraphy paintings! Another thing that pushes them to the top is that they have Master Hidy Ochiai himself who comes down from New York to do special teachings with the kids each month. Look him up on YouTube and watch him slice an apple on someone's neck .... wait for it .... blindfolded! His skills are incredible and he is incredible with the kids as well. This school is in no competition with any other Martial Arts place because it's THAT good! I want to write a novel on here, lol, but I won't. Just one last thing to note: Sensei Winkler himself is AHmazing with the kids too. The way he talks and interacts with the kids makes them listen and have fun. I've sat and watched him a number of times when my daughter is in class. He's structured and fun, which is exactly what my daughter needs! Sensei Winkler is an incredible teacher because he has a lifetime of experience and many trophies from national Championship tournaments! You have to at the very least come to their free class on Saturdays!

Initially, I was exploring different martial arts gyms for my 3-year-old daughter. While my daughter was pretty wary and didn't want to commit, I got a really good feeling the first time we observed the class and decided to join - And my gut feeling was right! There are three things that I love most about this gym: 1. People. Everyone, from the professors/coaches to the peers, are wonderful. The professors are all super friendly, approachable, and are always great at answering questions. The peers are respectful and not overly aggressive (in a hurtful-injury kinda way), and the upper belts are always happy to give pointers when asked (or when I look desperately clueless). I'll admit that I find grappling sports extremely intimidating, but everyone at the gym is so kind that I was able to continue going despite feeling super intimidated. Also, there are so many students, but the professors always remember people's names. That's amazing! Big shout out to Professor Dana, Professor Rafael, and Professor Thiago for being awesome. 2. The environment. The physical environment is clean, but more importantly, I find the (non-physical) environment incredibly welcoming. There are areas for kids to hang out when parents are taking classes, plenty of chairs and sofa, and staff are just so, so kind and nice to the kids!! As a mom who's hoping to get her 3-yo interested in bjj, I really appreciate this set up. 3. The classes. There are morning classes, middle-of-the-day classes, evening classes, and Saturday classes. There are classes for kids, teens, adults, and FEMALES. This variety allows me to attend classes with a wonky work schedule and learn from different professors and peers. More importantly, the classes are very organized, such that when I attend classes almost randomly throughout the week, different professors are all teaching similar techniques that build off of a streamlined curriculum, and I don't feel that I must attend classes on a regular schedule (e.g., M/W at 6:30am). I also love that there are position-specific training toward the latter part of every class. It's intimidating, but I learn a lot from these practices! I guess I could go on, but I'll just say that I highly recommend this gym!

The Masters are really encouraging (and sarcastic). I have friends that go there and (I think) they would sleep there sometimes. It's really fun. It's great that they wear uniforms and have names on eir black belts. When there's belt testing, there's a belt ceremony (although you don't have to go and it takes... too long). It's one of the two (maybe three) activities that make me want to exercise, practice, etc.

Where do I begin…read more... I was planning to take my 4-year-old son to Majest Martial Arts for their summer camp program, but after visiting the location I quickly changed my mind. They duped me into paying a non-refundable registration fee BEFORE allowing me to have a tour of the facility. But that's not the part that stinks..... Their idea of 'outside time' is letting kids play along a concrete alleyway that leads to oncoming traffic (accident waiting to happen). I didn't see ONE staff member outside supervising. The classrooms are filthy. The floors were heavily stained, and the room is over crowded with junk. Small children are forced to use the public/main restroom while the older kids have restrooms inside the classroom (seems backwards) You can't differentiate between staff/teachers and random people off the street because no one wears a uniform -- I wasn't sure who to address upon walking into the building. The issue I struggled with the most is their lack of organization. Parents are forced to put their credit card information on a sheet of paper (for weekly account withdraws) that is kept in a folder out in the open at the front desk. (shouldn't that be under lock and key?) Lastly, I voiced my concern with the office manager and she gave me nothing but attitude. I returned the next day to make sure I wasn't over exaggerating about my initial visit, and the manager looked at me and said 'it's the same as it was yesterday.' That was all the confirmation I needed to ask for my paperwork back and enroll my son elsewhere. Don't waste your time or money.
