I caked to ask if I could drop in the 3hrs evening open mat. The Prof answered the call & welcomed me to join his students. Both Gi & NoGi were welcome and there's no Gi color requirement. Those were my only concerns. I was able to roll for most of the 3hrs until people started resting. Only about 7 people showed up but as a Purple Belt I was glad to roll with their Brown Belt a few times, both Gi & NoGi, as well as a few tough Blue & White Belts. Everyone was friendly and considerate rolling partners. I definitely recommend that you drop in if you can.

The environment is friendly, supportive, and perfect for beginners, which made starting jiu-jitsu feel way less intimidating than I expected. Huge shoutout to Professor Hani, Professor Sean, Coach Alex, and Amber for being patient, kind, and genuinely helpful. It really feels like a family here and everyone takes the time to support you as you learn. They also offer classes for all ages and levels, including kids, adults, beginners, and more advanced students. And for all the ladies who are interested in an all-women's class, they also have that available at this location. If you are thinking about trying jiujitsu, this is a great place to start. Your first class is free and they make it very easy to get started, just call ahead before coming in.

The professors and coaches all have made meaningful connections with her and built a wonderful community of people, even sometimes having events and potlucks for that purpose, which we've enjoyed. They prioritize safety and I often hear them correcting and redirecting, explaining to the participants what their safety concern is. They model such an excellent camaraderie that it permeates the other students as well and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. My daughter has had some really amazing experiences here like special seminars, competitions, and once they even helped her attend a special women's class at another Gracie Barra location. She always enjoys her time in class, even the really hard ones, and has made some great friends. They've been accommodating of our schedule when we've needed to pause her membership and have a very easy process for that if needed. I highly recommend GB Great Falls.

For context, I am 40 years old with almost no combat sports experience, so I was a bit anxious/intimidated before starting the classes. That didn't last long though as the coaches and other athletes here are all extremely friendly and welcoming. The training is top notch and the coaches are exceptional at what they do. You will not only learn the skills but also get an awesome workout. They also offer a wide range of disciplines (ju-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, muay thai) and usually have around 10 different classes daily from early morning to later in the evening to accommodate for different schedules. They have definitely created a great culture and community at this gym and I look forward to continuing my journey here.

Initially, I was exploring different martial arts gyms for my 3-year-old daughter. While my daughter was pretty wary and didn't want to commit, I got a really good feeling the first time we observed the class and decided to join - And my gut feeling was right! There are three things that I love most about this gym: 1. People. Everyone, from the professors/coaches to the peers, are wonderful. The professors are all super friendly, approachable, and are always great at answering questions. The peers are respectful and not overly aggressive (in a hurtful-injury kinda way), and the upper belts are always happy to give pointers when asked (or when I look desperately clueless). I'll admit that I find grappling sports extremely intimidating, but everyone at the gym is so kind that I was able to continue going despite feeling super intimidated. Also, there are so many students, but the professors always remember people's names. That's amazing! Big shout out to Professor Dana, Professor Rafael, and Professor Thiago for being awesome. 2. The environment. The physical environment is clean, but more importantly, I find the (non-physical) environment incredibly welcoming. There are areas for kids to hang out when parents are taking classes, plenty of chairs and sofa, and staff are just so, so kind and nice to the kids!! As a mom who's hoping to get her 3-yo interested in bjj, I really appreciate this set up. 3. The classes. There are morning classes, middle-of-the-day classes, evening classes, and Saturday classes. There are classes for kids, teens, adults, and FEMALES. This variety allows me to attend classes with a wonky work schedule and learn from different professors and peers. More importantly, the classes are very organized, such that when I attend classes almost randomly throughout the week, different professors are all teaching similar techniques that build off of a streamlined curriculum, and I don't feel that I must attend classes on a regular schedule (e.g., M/W at 6:30am). I also love that there are position-specific training toward the latter part of every class. It's intimidating, but I learn a lot from these practices! I guess I could go on, but I'll just say that I highly recommend this gym!

To begin with, Phantom has a culture that is friendly, competitive, safe, and welcoming to every level of skill and experience. I started two years ago as a 36 year old woman, with no previous martial arts background. I never felt dismissed or ignored. Frank paid as much attention to me on day one as he would to any other member. I have never been afraid I was going to get injured on the mats, or that my partner would be a bully, because that is not the culture that Frank has developed. I am small, but I can train knowing my partner and I will play games based on good positions rather than just size and strength. Members greet each other and make small talk before class. There is no visible drama. Frank's instructions when demonstrating are clear and precise. His lesson plans are clearly thought out, and often build on previous units. I appreciate that he is punctual, and that he doesn't waste our time with filler stuff like conditioning or a prolonged warmup. It is all dense learning and drilling, followed by training. Additionally, I have never met a business owner who was so generous with their time. He regularly stays late after class to monitor and assist students who want to continue to drill and train. He has given me additional assistance and instruction whenever I have asked. I'm not special in this regard. I believe he is genuinely invested in his students development, and will match the time you are willing to put in with his own. Finally, this is one of the cleanest gyms I've ever been to. The mats are sanitized at least twice a day. The bathrooms are clean. The atmosphere is modern. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to give it a try.

Anyways, I came to TAG MT during a business trip and had known about this school already from watching TAG MT youtube instructional vids. I came early and got to see the kids class. It's a great balance of technical drills but also having lots of fun as the reward. The coaches are great and the kids look up to them, fully engaged and are adorable in their big Muay Thai shorts :P Head Instructor Kru Chris Aboy has an amazing personality and teaching style. His encyclopedic knowledge and teaching methodology is phenomenal. He can read each student individually while also making adjustments to the class as a whole depending on where everyone is at with the previous drill. You don't feel left behind at all. Coach James is amazing as well leading the partner drills and demos (for both Kids + Adults). In general, Phase 1 covers fundamental techniques including movement, defense, attacks, and counters through progressive partner drills. Coaches will demo technique, then go around reading students and providing helpful corrections and explaining the reasons why. Calistechnics and shadowboxing in-between rounds really push the conditioning. Controlled sparring drills towards the end adds just enough unpredictability yet retaining safety and technique. Phase 2 builds upon Phase 1 and adds in more advanced drills, focusing on more advanced strategies and technical sparring. For seasoned nak muay, TAG offers an in-depth knowledge and well rounded in all aspects. I really love their elbow/knee/clinch game. Nothing is watered down at all. I learned a LOT of new details to improve my technique is just one session. Most importantly, I felt taken care of and safe the entire time. If you live in the DC Metro Area and are interested in learning Muay Thai, whether it's for self-defense or competition, I strongly suggest checking out TAG Muay Thai. You will learn authentic, pure hard-hitting Muay Thai at TAG, along with the humility and respect of Traditional Muay Thai.
