Stopped in Local Roots one early evening for some sushi and kombucha. A bit of a strange mix, but hey I like both things so why not. One wall is fully open which is nice for fresh air and light, and the inside has a very casual vibe. Loved the kombucha (both hard and non-alcoholic) though sadly did not take a picture of it. I thought the sushi and edamame were both just okay. The rolls were a 3/5 in my opinion (a bit bland and pricey at $19/roll), and I wasn't a fan of the edamame (a little overcooked and didn't love the sauce). However, my boyfriend loved the edamame sauce, so I guess to each their own. Ultimately, I'd come back for the kombucha but would look elsewhere if I wanted sushi. read more

Delicious! I was happy to find that at least half of the taproom selections were flavors not sold in stores. We love discovering new flavors! The Orange Creamsicle and Limoncello were heavenly. The Pineapple Whip was also delicious. Wish we could've bought these flavors to take home, but unfortunately their can selection was quite picked over. Staff was very kind. The gentleman helping us was very attentive and offered many suggestions. We came right near opening, so it was empty inside. Just the way we like it. Ha! We were in Solano Beach for a few hours, not our normal area to visit, and were looking for a bite to eat. We searched Yelp and found this place, highly rate, so decided to try it. We are glad we did. I had one of the best rolls I have ever had, and that is saying a lot. It's called the Grandview. Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, topped with salmon, eel sauce, fried onion and tempura crunch. Fantastic! It's a must try. I do wish they had a better beer selection, but that's not the reason to come here. read more

I feel like they could have gone a little heavier on the amount of fish but it tasted really fresh/high quality. Glad to see that new places are being added to Cedros, we definitely need more drinking and dinning establishments in Solana beach, not just coffee shops on every corner. Local roots is a great addition to the beach community and its conveniently located next to Carruth wine cellar. On my first visit here I've tried Safari Ride (orange, passion fruit, lemongrass), it was not overly sweet, refreshing and my friend got a Tropical Habanero, which does have a spicy kick to it . We paired out drinks with sushi roll. The rainbow roll for $16 i thought was a bit overpriced and not very remarkable. I personally didn't enjoy kombucha and sushi together, however i loved a sample of sake that was offered to us with our meal. I'm definately coming back to try other kombucha flavors! read more

Yikes, I was really hoping to like this place but it was rough on so many fronts. The tofu poke bowl was pretty bare for the price but fine until I hit huge chunks of iceberg lettuce that were enormous and just the leftover pits. There was only one bartender and as people started to come in it was definitely not enough coverage for all the bussing, service, etc that was needed. At one point "Who Let The Dogs Out" started blasting on full volume over the speakers and the bartender said " Sorry our Bluetooth got hacked". It was just weird and not a good vibe or great food from start to finish. Maybe that was on me to get tofu instead of fish, but still not a great experience. Went for dinner to Local Roots by pure coincidence as I was with a group of girlfriends celebrating a birthday at the Belly Up and the food there was not of our liking. After the concert we attended we were super hungry and Local Roots was the closest option. We were surprised to see that they don't only sell kombuchas, but also sushi (apparently was a pop-up converted now in full kitchen). We were all super pleased with our rolls and even I am not a kombucha girl, I enjoyed the flavors of the generous samples provided. Kai Ola sushi is now in house and is....in our opinion the BEST sushi in north county SD! It's the freshest most amazing fish you can get and the chef in Solana beach is truly incredible! This place has a chill atmosphere. The swinging wicker chairs are awesome! They have a big selection of kombuchas. The pink panther is probably my favorite. We used to come here every Sunday night - friendly guy at the counter and Kevin's sushi was amazing - portions were fair but most of all the sushi was delicious - we had a salad and two rolls and 2 kombuchas and our bill was 120.00! Salad had very little fish and was 30.00! It's a bummer as we came here with friends and by ourselves all the time! Sushi was just OK and we learned Kevin no longer there!
