I am finally breaking down and writing this review, as I am brokenhearted about how Sbicca is no longer the experience it used to be. This was my wife and I's second visit since the change in ownership, and the first time we forgave them thinking they would get it together. But we did wait a couple of years before we came back. So I made a reservation on a Saturday evening at 6 and we arrived on time. The table we were offered was a very small 2 seat right at the host podium, on the patio. Looked pretty quiet so I was a little disappointed, but ok. So the evening starts ok, we get our drink order in and an app. Just after our wine came they said sorry, can we take your table? They were rearranging for a large group expected later. So we held everything in our hands or laps while they dragged our table away. Good news is they brought a slightly larger one. Ok, still hanging in there. But now for the next 20 minutes they are dragging solar heaters around, moving tables, and in the process, ignoring us because they have all this to do. But our dinner eventually comes and the rearranging is done, but the large party starts to arrive. Turns out, of course, our server was their server. So things slowed WAY down for us but we did get a dessert order in, which was to be accompanied by a glass of port we were to share. After 10 minutes the dessert came and the server clarified with us we only wanted one glass. Affirmed. They disappear for 20 minutes to serve the big group. So our dessert included ice cream, it's starting to melt, we are trying to hang on...and after all this time our server comes over to tell us they are out of port. Now we're 30 minutes plus after ordering, that's pretty bad. So now we eat our dessert, really not enjoying it because of the service. Finally, waiting for our check, the owner comes over. It's been almost an hour since our dessert order. He apologizes profusely that there was a misunderstanding...they do have port...then with a flourish he produces a glass and says it's on the house. We would have sent it back but I think we were a little shocked at unaware he was Tone deaf to the situation. Three hours. $350. Miserable experience. Goodbye Sbicca, we miss the old. read more

I've dined at Sbicca quite a few times with colleagues, and today was no exception. The two waitstaff, Vinny and Jackson, provided excellent service. I'm glad we arrived early at 5:30 for dinner because the crowd really starts to build after 6 p.m. This visit was for a special occasion, as it was my sister's birthday. We ordered the crab cakes and the pasta Bolognese, both of which were delicious. The fish and chips were also better than what you find at most restaurants. The lightly battered fish was crispy yet light, and the French fries were nicely seasoned and crunchy. Jackson was always attentive in clearing our plates, which I appreciated since we had a very small table. Vinny, our server, was consistently attentive and made the whole experience feel relaxing and enjoyable. The patio seating is very visible from the street, which adds to the lively atmosphere. Although I used to live in Del Mar, I'd always walk past Sbicca's unassuming storefront. It's one of many stores nestled along the street leading to Sea Grove Park. From the outside, it appears rather small, which is why I was surprised by its size when I visited; the restaurant extends deeply inwards, so it is bigger than expected. At night, the atmosphere is also very fun and lively, even on a weekday. Parking isn't fun, but street parking and (paid) structure parking are options. I came here recently for a work dinner, and I just needed to make one or two loops. And before I delve into the food, I want to give a quick shoutout for the great service we received all night! Our waiter was very diligent and attentive; he made sure to provide updates when items were stalled. Several of us had to leave early, and so he made sure to get us to-go containers so we could take our food home. Okay, now for the food! Appetizers: - Ahi Poke Wontons: 7/10. The wonton chips were crispy and not oily at all. The sweet ginger was a bit overpowering, though. - Salt & Pepper Shrimp: 6/10. I'm not a huge fan of shrimp, but these were good! A bit crispy, and very large! This was my coworker's favorite appetizer. - Grilled Steak Skewers: 8/10. Delicious! The herb marinade was subtle, but it added that extra punch to some already tender steak. I get easily icked out by beef, but the size of these bites made it easily palatable. - Crab cakes: 9/10. My favorite bite of the night!! Although the crab flavor wasn't super pronounced, it was delicious. The crispiness of the exterior paired nicely with the soft filling. I think I had like four of these by myself. Starter: - Baby gem caesar salad: 5/10. Kinda mid salad. I mean, it's good, but nothing memorable. It looks kinda sad since there was no protein. Entree: - Sesame-crusted king salmon. 8/10. Very nice presentation! I love the way they cooked their heirloom baby carrots. The shoyu butter was pleasant without being overwhelming. The salmon filet was a good size, too. Dessert: - Chocolate brownie: 9.5/10. I'm easy to please with desserts! This was so yummy! The cold vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate brownie combination is hard to mess up. Obviously, it is very sweet, but my sweet tooth loved it. Consistently great, tried the fish sandwich for the first time, I think it was halibut? It was delicious either way. Service is usually really quick, never have to wait too long for a drink or food. This place has come up in multiple searches but had never tried until last night. Last minute opportunity to go to dinner on a Saturday night and we were lucky enough to be able to get a a table on the front patio at sunset...beautiful. The service was very warm and attentive and the food was fantastic! We can never pass up a good bolognese and this one did not disappoint...mushrooms were a great add and plentiful, but our favorite was the dollop of pesto that was unexpected but made the dish for us. We also split a Caesar salad (very light and good) and the raspberry cheesecake (raspberry sauce was perfect). Really enjoyed our visit and will definitely return. read more

It had mixed greens, corn, cherry tomatoes, red onion, avocado. There was a dressing that came on the side as well but I didn't add any because it was lovely on its own. I would say the chicken was a little bit overcooked and dry but otherwise a very flavorful salad! Farmer Burger (Sautéed wild mushrooms, grilled onions, egg, Swiss cheese, arugula lettuce & garlic aioli) Husband got this burger with a side salad and the burger itself was phenomenal! Both people said that they usually get soggy chilaquiles at other restaurants but this one was the perfect balance of crunchy and saucy. Churro French Toast Bites (with chocolate dipping sauce, whipped cream, seasonal berries) A friend on the table got this and shared it with her husband. Very creative concept here! I was expecting slices of bread but it turned out to be a little bits of bread that were cooked like French toast and then coated in cinnamon sugar. I was really looking forward to happy hour and was so excited to return to Sbicca after having such a great experience previously. We already knew what we wanted to order before we even sat down. The staff was great as usual. There was a good crowd outside, and they had umbrellas set up so you're not sitting directly in the sun. That said, I was a bit disappointed this time. The food didn't taste as consistent as we both remembered. For example, the Salmon Crudo tasted a bit sweeter rather than having that lime forward flavor we were expecting. Don't get me wrong it was still good and we will continue to return! But for us, we'll probably just stick to two orders of the sliders we love so much next time. read more

Everyone here is Great! Greg was slammed with several tables and a huge party to take care of, and he managed to balance everyone well to make sure everyone was served. His helper made sure plates were cleared, new utensils were given and water was always refilled. The kitchen was Fire! They were slammed yet somehow got food out in a timely manner.... Dare I say... Quick! They split the mixed salad for us which was very nice. The salad dressing was fantastic and I could have easily drank it from the container...or just give me a bowl of it. Ha! The Bread was HOT out of the oven!!!! And just melted in your mouth. My ahi was perfectly prepared. Although I thought the sesame crust was a little heavy handed and salty.... But that's me. I really liked the wasabi mashed potatoes as well!! I got a small taste of the husband's shrimp and it was succulent! All in all...a really nice meal. Sbicca is a great location in downtown Del Mar where you can get views of the ocean and sunset. The menu is clearly labeled with allergens and the staff seems to be knowledgeable about accommodations. The filet mignon tacos sounded like a great idea but the execution was poor. The steak pieces were heavily salted, over cooked and too large for the fragile corn tortilla to support. The sauce also had a decent spice level. The biggest issue was the speed of service. We had to flag down the waiter multiple times to take our order and get the check. Our entree order wasn't taken until at least 20 minutes after we finished the appetizers. This spot has always been one of my favorite restaurants to go to when in Del Mar! I have been coming here with my mom since I was young as a mother daughter day and now I love bringing friends here to check it out. If you sit on the patio you can enjoy views of the water. I love that their menu has a little bit of everything so you really can please everyone in your group. We were in Del Mar for an extended stay and ended up dining here 4 time, all for Happy Hour at the bar area and meeting friend for dinner on the street level patio area. Out of all the times the service from the Bar and Jose on the patio was excellent. This is a great place to meet friends. As far as drinks go, the bar makes excellent Skinny Margaritas, Bloody Marys, Espresso and Regular Martinis and their 1/2 off wine days are great. Food has always been consistently good. The Mussels, Shrimp Fettuccini, Crispy Chicken Buns, Veggie Flatbread Farm Burger, Salmon Crudo and the Meatballs all hot and fresh. The Mussels and burgers were excellent. Poor guy was all alone and nobody seemed concerned that someone was obviously late. When she is here, we usually visit another great beach town in search of fashion, food and other fabulous finds. We chose to eat at Sbicca, a long established restaurant in downtown Del Mar. Modern fare and not as seafood heavy as its local counterparts. Sbicca began as a local shoe brand, hence meeting our food and fashion needs. My team and I came here for dinner as some of them were visiting. I've never heard of this restaurant but was quite excited to check it out! It's located in between Del Mar Pizza and Jimmy O's on 15th St in Del Mar. There's unfortunately no on-site parking lot, only street parking or paid public parking lots. Basically a nightmare to find during dinner rush hours. I luckily found street parking a couple blocks away. I thought I was okay until a very kind Samaritan came up to me to tell me that my care was a little bit in the red and that I should move up a little more before I got a ticket. Wait whaaat? Just a little in the red, and I could get a ticket? After dinner, I saw a Tesla across of me with a ticket for being in the red a little! THANK YOU KIND SAMARITAN! Be wary when you park in Del Mar areas because the parking polices are actual sticklers. Not worth that ticket. My team ordered some sharing plates such as the Ahi Poke, Korean Beef Lettuce Wraps, and Shishito Peppers. The ahi poke was frozen but surprisingly not that bad in flavor. Wished there was more chipotle aioli sauce to give it more of a nice kick. It came with three fried wonton pieces to complement the poke. That was kind of stale in my opinion. The Korean beef lettuce wraps were very good. The beef had a lot of flavor and the vegetables gave the beef a nice balance in freshness. I'm not a huge shishito pepper fan but everyone loved it! Two of them started comparing the spiciness of the peppers as some were very spicy and others were not spicy at all. It was interesting to watch LOL. I ordered the Black Tiger Shrimp as my entrée. It came with a spinach and asparagus risotto which was what piqued my interest to try (aside from my love for shrimp LOL). And wow! That risotto was delicious! Super savory without too much saltiness in it. The shrimps were huge and grilled perfectly. I thought the portions of my entrée was tiny at first glance when comparing to other dishes, but it was surprisingly filling. One of my coworkers allowed me to try their Coffee-Rubbed Short Rib, and omg. That short rib was SOOOO tender. Almost as if it melted in my mouth. The flavor of the short rib was just as amazing too. I kind of regretted that I didn't choose this as my entrée. Overall, this restaurant was a great place to get together with work colleagues or for a relatively nice date night. Happy hour gone wrong. Should've stayed with the happy hour menu. We ordered a bone marrow appetizer for 17$. It was a 4 inch piece of bone with one bite of bone marrow and it was covered in jarred thai chili sauce. Why??? Two pieces of bread for one bite of marrow. I mean, what a disappointment. Avoid. Something has gone really wrong here. Had a work dinner tonight in the wine room. Every aspect was a disappointment. The shades were dirty and partly broken, the service was horrible, and the food was not fresh. Shortly after we sat, the waiter told us we needed to order right away. He then disappeared for 20+ minutes, only to storm back in and ask what we wanted. Salads arrived, lettuce was brown and couldn't figure out the dressing? For a main I got the ravioli with peas and a tomato cream sauce and sun dried tomatoes (I think? I honestly couldn't tell what it was). It was edible but clearly not fresh- Trader Joe's would have been better. I left a few ravioli on my plate, and the waiter tried to box it up to go. No thanks. But the service was the worst part of the meal. The waiter would come in the room every 15-25 minutes, see if we needed anything, and then leave. He kept bumping or seats, annoyed that we were there. Our wine glasses sat empty through most of the dinner. The host at one point ordered two drinks because he was sick of waiting. And then the bill came. I have no idea what was going on because I wasn't paying, but it went back at least 4-5 times. Used to be a good restaurant. No longer. I had a reservation for 630 Saturday eve, I arrived at 6 and said things have changed i would now like a table for 3 now if possible. The host/damager said well, that changes everything, we can seat you now but you have 90 minutes to eat, my friends hadn't arrived yet. He was simply rude!!! Seated waiting for friends who arrived at 620pm. Ordered drinks and crab cake. When these arrived we ordered our entrees. My chicken pamesan arrived, I could barely put a knife thru it, it was like cardboard. The waiter at this point had been very nice! Another served took it and resubmitted the order, my friends were eating their meals and had completed when I called the waited to check on mine. He returned saying there was a back up on the chicken orders, it was approx 715, I said cancel the order and requested the bill. Our original waiter, who had been nice, Johann L. Returned with the CC machine, I asked if the Chicken Parm had been taken off and he said yes. I handed him a $100 bill and he showed me the machine showing $130, I gave him an additional $100 bill and asked for the change and receipt. He returned with the change, no bill, I requested again and he said ok. He also then asked us to leave as our 90 minutes were up. I asked again for the receipt and we waited. Asked another server and he came back and said they were working on it. Eventually JL returns with the receipt, cash for what the over charge and what I felt was a scam as well as an attitude on his part and now trying to explain what happened. My friends are locals in Del Mar, I'm in OC. None of us will EVER return there and will spread the word amongst our many connections in the area. They should be ashamed!!! read more
