Greeting at the door,wait staff and recommendations, food, vibe, etc. I had the special (linguine with clams, mussels and calamari) and my wife and friend had a pizza and salad and I shared a salad with my buddy who had egg plant Parma. Lo Coco's kept us fed through the pandemic via takeaway (combo pizza, linguine sugo, and one of the salads covers two meals+ for us) but in-person dining with the great service, ambiance, and delicious food right out of the oven was sublime. The warm bread with excellent olive oil was a great start. We split the veg salad and shared the pappardelle bolognese and the tortelli sugo (note: tortelli does have meat, which we're good with, but really liked that the server made sure we noticed that) with a half carafe of wine. We had leftover pasta and were so full we had to take our dessert home with us - tiramisu - highly recommend. The leftover pasta heated back up nicely as a side for our dinner the next night. Lo Coco's specializes in Sicilian food, and they do it very well. The menu is solid and reliable. I haven't found any of the dishes really memorable, but they are all well done and satisfying. This is a neighborhood restaurant, not destination dining. It's family owned and run. -'and they're very nice people. Solid wine list, including some Sicilian choices. On the downside, it's a bit cramped, and they don't take reservations. Service is good, but when it's busy the waitresses can get a bit harried. But they always deliver. read more

Went to The Greek Theater for a show and this was our dinner pick before the show. I am not a big fan of Italian food but this place rocked the cuisine. I did my thumbing through the Yelp food pics and the pizza caught my eye. I knew pizza was going to be heavy especially before a show, but it looked soooo good. I said "oh I will take half of this home" ...nope, it was freaking amazing! The little burnt crust and chard pepperoni made it taste so good. This is the best Italian food in the Bay Area! Everything is absolutely delicious. There isn't a single bad dish on the menu. The staff is very friendly and attentive. It's usually pretty busy on a weekend evening, so be sure to come early. The restaurant itself is in a very small space and you're often elbow-to-elbow with the table next to you, but I've never had a problem with it. I'm always amazed at how the servers are able to navigate around such a packed space. Try the pesto ravioli or any of the pastas with homemade sugo sauce, the meatballs, all of their famous pizzas, and, especially, the giant serving of tiramisu! read more

An experience where the head chef came out of the kitchen and asked me to leave still sticks in my mind. Ordered a pizza with meatballs and discovered the meatballs were made with currants which I can't eat. Since it was a surprise ingredient, I asked waitress if I could possibly request a replacement with no meatballs. Then came the loud voice of the chef telling me in front of the whole dining room that I insulted his grandmother's meatball recipe. I didn't say they tasted bad. I didn't argue. I simply said I wasn't able to eat it and asked for a different pizza because of the surprise of the currants in a meatball. I would first like to loudly state..this is a Sicilian Restaurant. Things are slightly different from the typical Italian, but very good! The location is small and quant, staff friendly and really looks to attract locals. My friend ordered the green salad and she was wishing for a bit more- she felt the vinaigrette was great, but wanted olive, green onion vs. just lettuce and tomato. The bread was delicious- warm, crunchy outside, soft inside. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana- eggplant was thinly sliced, not horribly breaded and the Sugo sauce was ON POINT. LOVED THIS DISH. My hubby ordered the Napoletana Pizza- now this is what I call pizza! Crunchy and soft crust, olives, mushrooms and again...THE SAUCE!! My toddler loved the pizza. I removed one star because they were out of the cannoli... so sad. OH, one last thing, the olive oil had a lovely flavor, almost lemon like hints. Will def return and hope to get my hands on that Cannoli. read more

My favorite Italian spot at Berkeley so far! We shared some fried calamari, broiled salmon, fettuccine campagnola, tiramisu and glasses of sparkling wine and house white, as suggested. Calamari- The batter was so light that it kept all the flavors of the super fresh calamari. The sauce was sweet and sour. With a few drops of lemon, it definitely elevated the dish to an amazing level. Sparkling (Gorchi Tondi-Palmares-Brut)- Dry bit crisp. Very refreshing and a great option as a starter. Broiled salmon- The salmon was ok, a little bit on the drier end. The tomato sauce that went with the pasta was excellent. Does not have that strong spice flavor, and kept all the good tastes from a tomato. Fettuccine Campagnola- This was my favorite of the night. It was shaved prosciutto with green peas in a light cream. Usually I'm not a huge fan of cream pasta, Because sometimes the sauce is too thick or too creamy to barely finish it. Lo Coco's really nailed it! And made me want to finish the should plate. It was very creamy in texture, but light on the pellet. Tiramisu- The perfect way to end an Italian meal. Very coffee-flavored. Excellent dessert. Can't wait to come back and try other pastas and pizzas! read more

If they have it, the involtini appetizers are to die for! If you're celiac, you can order any pasta sauce and sub the noodle with gluten free gnocchi. We've tried many, many times to eat here but it's always a very long line and they do NOT accept reservations (very challenging) so we arrived on a recent Saturday afternoon at 4pm knowing full-well that they don't open until 4:30. We brought our own spiked seltzers to pass the time and the management did not mind one bit, in fact at about 4:15 or so they brought WATER and BREAD (&butter) out to us to help slake our appetites. After some very pleasant small -talk with the owner/chef and the very nice wait person we were able to order a light supper (it was a very hot day) : a caprese salad (variation: not Buffalo Mozzarella but Burrata) and a light Scallops and pasta which was FANTASTIC in flavor without being heavy on sauce. Our meal was delightfully improved by our Rose. In all, a perfect-if light- meal on our very rare date-night (and 24th wedding anniversary). The food continues to be amazing and delicious. Even with smaller portions and increased prices the meal was worth the effort to get there (from Benicia). We hadn't been back since COVID. The house red always satisfies. We had the linguine with meatballs and a salad. Only one piece of very hard bread served with the salad, and no bread nor cheese was offered with the main meal. The former lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere from pre-COVID was completely absent. Water was plunked down on our table without any words of welcome. No good evening. No hellos, please or thank you's were shared by the staff. The waitress seemed like we were a bother. The bill was plunked down without any words of "hope you enjoyed your meal." We'll go back. For the food. Boy oh boy do I miss the warmth. read more

Food was good but service was poor. 13 professional African American women gathered together to celebrate the retirement of one of Oakland's finest doctors. Reservations were made a month prior for the large group and staff said they could accommodate us. We were told no separate checks and outside cupcakes were fine with no charge. We brought cupcakes to celebrate this joyous occasion and were told an additional charge of 2.50 per person would be added to the bill, if cupcakes were eaten at the table. The restaurant was extremely hot, staff opened one window in our area, but we observed additional windows opened after we left. We were asked to leave before everyone was finished because other people waiting for tables. We paid our bill and left a 20% tip, and gathered outside. We continued to honor our retiree & had our cupcakes. Everyone complained about the poor service received and decided as a group that we would not return to Lo Coco's restaurant.. read more

I felt inclined to bring my family here after smelling the pizza and garlic aroma walking by one night. Service was wonderful, came for an early dinner. Love the focaccia fresh out of the oven (free including refills) with great olive oil. They had vegetarian and gluten free options. All the pasta was great. I had the pesto tortelli. My son and I went here to grab a pie last night because we've been wanting to try different places around Berkeley. We normally hit Bobby G's for thin, or Zachary's (occasionally Little Star) for Chicago style. We also tried Nick's on Shattuck almost into Oakland a few weeks ago and thought that was great. I had been here perhaps back in 2016-2017 and thought it was a delicious, traditional, Sicilian style place where the staff is friendly and welcoming. Back then, we didn't order any pizza, but I do remember thinking it was a tad pricey, but I am admittedly a value guy haha. That didn't really cross my mind last night with the crazy food/restaurant price inflation we've experienced over the past few years. If you want your local food establishments to be able to stay in business, turn a decent profit and pay a fair wage, that's just what it costs. We ordered the large Lo Coco's special, which is pepperoni, green onion, artichoke, and anchovies. This pizza was an absolutely wonderful mix of flavors and cooked perfectly. My son, who can be prone to hyperbole, said it might be the best pizza he's ever had. I must say the anchovies were very subtle and I can't say I actually tasted any in the first bite, but then you would catch a hint of it in the next bite that blended so well with the rest of the pie. The pepperoni was also unique tasting in a good way. Since I had eaten some of their wonderful bread and part of a fresh green salad, I was only able to eat a couple of slices. The special of the day was undercooked or rewarmed risotto, it was hard to tell what the issue was with this soupy mess that was presented in a bowl with guanciale, which was tasteless. Not much effort went into this dish. The hostess was lukewarm at best and we skipped coffee and dessert which we always order after a good meal. This was not a good meal. Disappointed, as we have dined here a few times and also had a party for 15 at the Berkeley location a few years ago.
