Liu's Shanghai is a great family run business. The scallion pancakes are very good (highly recommend). The lions head meatball were succulent and I wasn't expecting anyone in Brooklyn to be serving them up so I was so excited to see them on the menu. And now... for the soup dumplings: the soup dumplings were full of soup and delicious but the presentation left something to be desired as you can see from the photos, the dumplings are lopsided and spilling out of their skins. Pre Covid Review Halloween 2019. I always thought the best soup dumplings in New York City was in Queens, until I found this little beauty here. Liu's Shanghai has some really good soup dumplings. The filling was meaty and tons load of soup when you bite into it. The bigger slurp the more you know you got a good soup dumpling. I always like pairing soup dumplings with stir fried noodles and rice cakes. Good combination and can never go wrong with it. The dishes came out super efficiently fast and the check was super cheap. The competition for the best Shanghainese soup dumplings in NYC is fierce, but Liu's Shanghai's is certainly a strong contender. After a long subway ride and rainy trek, my husband and I were rewarded with fresh, delicious soup dumplings as well as our hearty bowls of noodles. The pork soup dumplings were succulent and flavorful. Each one was both small and substantial. No complaints here. The noodle soup with pickled vegetables and shrimp was terrific. I selected the default thin noodles, though in hindsight I could have tried the "niangao" with a dry version. The pickled vegetables provided a sour kick to the light broth. Overall, this was solid, satiating, and delightful. This is clearly more of a neighborhood spot where local families come together and share plates. Hands down some of the best Chinese food I've had in a while. I came in a while ago with my family, and the man at the counter was instantly smiling and welcoming us. He was also constantly checking up on how customers were doing. Food, on the other hand, was the main reason for this good review. I found this restaurant on Instagram. We (party of three) came here for lunch on New Year's Day. When we arrived, we were given an estimated wait time of 5 minutes, which was not bad. We ordered the scallion pancake, crab meat & pork soup dumplings, pan fried noodles with a little bit of everything, and beef with mushrooms & bamboo shoots. Everything was delicious! But of course, this is a yelp review so let's provide some more useful info: This is a small shop with a few large tables and a healthy menu, and by healthy, I mean a lot of things on the menu. Scallop XLB was unlike anything I'd ever tried. Chunks of scallop and loads of soup with a thick-ish skin similar to Joe's Shanghai. Definitely the best XLB in our neighborhood (and authentic)! We also always get the scallion pancakes and stir fried nian gao (the sauce is hearty and thick). Liu's has been around in Brooklyn for a long time and I've also neglected coming here as my go-go soup dumpling places are all located in Flushing or Manhattan. I am glad that I came here one evening with my family as the seating was quick fast and the food came out even faster. We ordered the pork and crab soup dumplings which was quite delicious. The skin was incredibly thin and the meat was plentiful. The scallion pancake was nicely done. What out-shined the dinner itself was the Dong Po Pork. Overall, you can get better soup dumplings elsewhere, but if traveling out to Flushing or Manhattan is too much work, Liu's Shanghai will do. read more

We went there as a family of seven on Christmas Eve. I had made a reservation the week before, as they only have one large, round table, and the space is small. The service was excellent, and the food matched it. Small space, full up = noisy. I'm not a fan of scallion pancakes, but my very picky six year old twin granddaughters loved them, and everyone else gave them a thumbs up. The fried wontons were amazing, super crispy and somewhat sweet, and I would go back just for them. The scallop & pork soup dumplings were yummy. The big surprise was the cold wheat gluten (Shanghai Kai Fu). I was doubtful others would like it, but I think it was the most flavorful dish we had, and it was finished off no problem. Another surprise was the Hong Kong style hot sour soup, which our waiter informed us had pig intestines and blood in it. Two of us went for it, and it was so good, super spicy, and all four adults tried it & liked it. The blood was like small pieces of liver, but tasteless, and the pig intestine was simply like pork. We also had salt & pepper pork chops, which were rather small pieces and very fatty, but tasty. The only dish that wasn't gobbled up was the spicy beef with shredded tofu, which was not spicy enough for us, and somehow missed the mark in flavor. In sum, I can't wait to go back. read more

This little corner restaurant has decent soup dumplings. My sister in law recommended this place and it didn't disappoint. Both the pork and crab soup dumplings were quite good. We also ordered fried wonton with peanuts and spicy sauce, Peking style pork chop, jellyfish, green beans, think noodles with everything, fried chicken wings and fried sweet buns. I did like the fried wontons as it was unique in flavors. There were some dishes I was too fond of. The jellyfish was a little bland and green beans was not as crunchy. I used to live close to Liu's Shanghai a long time ago and frequented this restaurant. After moving twice, we never came back because of how far it was and how there are way more options closer to us on 86th street. My family and I decided to revisit Liu's Shanghai this Sunday afternoon, wondering if the food is still as good. The restaurant itself is fairly small, so I can see it getting packed very quickly. Luckily, we arrived and got seated right away. We ordered crab meat xiao long bao, scallion pancake, fried wontons in peanut and hot sauce, and stir-fried pork Shanghainese noodles. Crab meat xiao long bao (3.5/5): The flavor of the dumplings are good and the skin was perfectly thin, but it wasn't as juicy as we hoped it would be. Scallion pancake (4.5/5): Came out hot! The scallions were very fresh and the pancake was crispy. It was flavorful by itself, but I prefer to eat it with soy sauce. Fried wontons in peanut and hot sauce (5/5): The highlight of our visit. I normally love the unfried version of this dish at other restaurants, but who doesn't love some fried wontons? The crunch gives it more of a texture and adds a nice caramelization to the wonton skin. However, it doesn't soak in as much of the sauces compared to the non-fried version. Stir-fried pork Shanghainese noodles (4/5): This dish is a staple and a must-order when I eat at any Shanghainese restaurant. The one here had bok choy, slices of king oyster mushrooms, thin strips of pork, and strips of cabbage. Overall, a pretty good dish, but could use a bit more flavor. Although the seating is a little cramped, the service was good and fast. The food here is at least average, if not above, and has the most consistent standard in every dish compared to other restaurants. If you ever visit get a chance to visit, I highly recommend the fried wontons in peanut and hot sauce! I'll be back to try some of their other dishes. read more

Liu's Shanghai is actually the only Shanghai restaurant in the area and considering that, their food is very good. They've nailed the xiao long bao and stir fry noodles which are the two main things I return for. I usually start with some scallion pancakes which are a classic, thin and lightly crispy with sauce on the side. The pork from the xiao long bao is nice and tender surrounded by the broth that's rich in umami flavor. One other thing I look out for is the texture and consistency of the wrap on the xiao long bao which needs to be thin with a little bit of a chew and not too doughy. Their stir fried udon here is a must as well, a bouncy noodle packed with soy and beef flavor and crunchyness from the veggies. The service here is exceptional as the servers here are always attentive to our needs and open to any adjustments on menu items. I'm so torn about this review because there is a lot of nostalgia for Liu's and a family-run business for the neighborhood is an endlessly appealing idea to me. I've been coming here since I was a little girl for their incredible soup dumplings and various other delicious Shanghainese specialities. However, in recent years it seems the quality of the food, especially the soup dumplings, have gone seriously downhill. The past several times I have ordered the crab and pork xlb, I've noticed that the wrapper is doughy and mushy, breaking apart as soon as I picked it up. This is indicative of the soup dumplings being frozen beforehand and if this is the quality of what they're serving, I might as well just get a box of xlb from Trader Joe's and eat at home. It breaks my heart because once upon a time, Liu's served the most delicately wrapped, juiciest xlb around--it's my sincere hope that they bring that iteration back. It's charming, for sure-- the space is the size of a living room and the staff are nice too. There are also some dishes that have remained consistently excellent all these years, most notably their kau fu (braised wheat gluten) that is jam-packed with savory goodness and generously portioned. We put in our orders for the soup dumplings and proceeded to order the rest after. My friend LOVES the mock duck and fish head casserole soup here and I definitely agree. The fish head casserole definitely delivers a very home-style, mom spent all afternoon making it, kind of feel. I am also a big fan of their noodle dishes (especially their rice cakes). You have the option of choosing thin, thick, rice, vermicelli or rice cakes here, so the choices are endless :) They also serve veggie, meat and rice dishes for the entire family to enjoy. I love their fried vegetable dumpling with a side order of peanut sauce, yum! However, service could be better. I've never been to an establishment where the staff sits with their phones out while sitting in one of the tables. I really don't care to be honest, if the staff was attentive. Have always loved this place! It's a great spot for family style dinners (come early if you don't want to wait). The soup dumplings, fried wontons, and scallion pancakes are all must-gets. They have a great menu with a good selection of everything from meats to soups and veggies. The fish head casserole is another thing they make very well here, it's a hot-sour soupy dish with lots of spices, fish, and tofu over soft and chewy glass noodles that absorbed all the flavors. I would highly recommend this dish if you want to try something new. -1 because the most recent time I was here, all of their soup dumplings (we had crab meat, regular, and fish roe) were soggy and didn't have any soup in them.
