The four of us sat outside in a wonderfully seated table with a magnificent view of the valley. Service could not be better. Everyone was helpful and pleasant. I teased the staff for not knowing what a fondant was or what was the centerpiece plant at our table. These were not tests at all. I always have questions of staff because plain old curiosity. Unfortunately the pleasant experience with our servers and waiters was not matched by our food, which was simply not good. I am not a food perfectionist, but I did expect much more from a restaurant that priced its fare and traded on its reputation so highly. Let me start with the balled crab cake. The small, marble sized breaded cake was stuffed with a bit of crab. The concept was appreciated and welcomed, but after popping the bite sized marble of fried breaded crab in my mouth, there was nothing to it that made me think of sweet dungeness, and whatever was in the bread seasoning should never have been paired with dungenous crab. Whoever created this bite missed what dungeness has to offer. That was just the start, but it put me on notice of what I feared was next to come, but I still hoped that the evening would not be spoiled, especially a dinner to celebrate two birthdays. Let me get to the main course as this review is not about a marble-sized crab cakes. My main course was the lamb. Lamb is one of my favorite dishes. This country is indebted to Australia for Costco rack of lamb. But this lamb? Medallions of lamb is what I would call it . It was way too gamey. I have tasted gamey animals before, but lamb in a fine dining restaurant without at least a comment from our well-mannered server and waiter? I could barely grin and chew on it so as not to sadden the rest of my family by expressing my true feelings, and I KNOW my wife would NEVER allow me to embarrass her and my sons by requesting that the lamb be taken back,. Before the entree I had ordered the halibut. I was not disappointed or surprised with the size of fish. After all this was to be a fine dining experience and the smaller-than-a playing-card-sized halibut was beautifully crusted. I could not wait to taste something special. Unfortuately, looks were deceiving and the halibut was dry, dry, dry. As for the starter dish, I chose the octopus. I couldn't wait. Mediterranean-billed octopus is a beautiful dish, but not this fella. It was just plain with uncomfortable texture. Octopus is difficult to get right, but for the $1,200 spent by four people for two birthday dinners and $23.00 cocktails, a much better octopus dish was deserved. I have attached photos of the halibut and the lamb. I ask you to look at the plating for both. Am I being too critical, or can you tell me you can make out or find appetizing what the halibut and lamb are sitting on? I could go on, but The Restaurant meal was extremely disappointing. Maybe a line cook couldn't get the plating right, but how does gamey lamb and dry halibut get out of the kitchen without someone higher up not paying attention? Then there was a heartbreaking part that probably explains the philosophy of the place. There is a small library or sitting room alongside the restaurant. Inside was an oversized book of Annie Liebowitz photographs. This is the huge book of prints that contains an intro by Steve Martin. It's was a joy to turn the pages for these XL sized photos. Unfortunately the book binding was severely damaged. The spine was almost shredded and falling apart. One photo was ripped. I asked the attendant why the book was not repaired so that it was not lost to usage and time. She tried valiantly to answer. It was not her fault, but just another example of a business not paying attention to something that could be a beautiful experience for its customers.

Personally, I've never had anything that was on the menu so it was a first try for everything I order and I can say, it definitely was amazing!
