My parents brought me home from the hospital in 1975, to house at the other end of the alley from Linda Rosa market. Within a few years, I was walking or riding my bike down here to get a Popsicle or a candy bar. Years ago, before the big fire during the LA rio tax they used to serve cooked meats and tacos from the butcher counter, as well as prepared asada to take home and grill. Today, you can still buy pretty good marinated meat here, but the price isn't the smoking deal it used to be. The store has seen a dozen different owners since those days, and each new owner has slightly changed the place... Although the name has stayed the same, and a lot of the same products are still on the shelves... In some cases, it feels like the SAME cans that were there when I was a kid in the 80s! In high school when I could eat anything and maintain my body weight, I used to go there for a buttermilk, three Chocodiles, and a bunch of packets of Limón salt... Then the next owner stopped carrying those items. One owner sold 2 liters of soda for a discount price, but it had to be "Warm Only!" A sign warned that cold 2 liters of the same product were more expensive! Currently, I'm not crazy about this place. The prices are no longer a neighborhood deal, and the produce and meat counter don't have quite the same panache. The cashiers range from "Hello, Boss, my friend!" to completely ignoring you for the sake of a phone call, spoken loudly enough in Maharashtra or Tamil or something that you can enjoy the music of the dialect from the back of the store. Occasionally, the sweetish smell of rotting produce is obvious, and the place needs a good once over with some Mr. Clean Magic erasers or something. It's just... Dingy. If I'm buying a quick six or something, I always prefer M&S on the other side of the building.... Still, this place has been a part of my life for nearly 4 decades, and hope it sticks around for a while. Or at least until these owners get tired of it and sell it to someone cool. Bring back ChocoDiles!

best carne ranchera in ALL of Los Angeles!!!

The best skirt steak (carne ranchera) in all of Los Angeles. Order it "marinada" and grill medium well. The pollo marinado is very good as well. I have been to many carnicerias and NO ONE comes close to their skirt steak. The owner mentioned they get their meat exclusively through this ranch where they cows are grass fed and free range. I Higly recommend it even if it means a long drive.

Love their wet burrito with cabeza and avacado with extra salsa. Possibility the best wet burrito i've had to date.

Hmm burned bun? No thanks

It's known for its guacamole! It's local, friendly staff, and the only place I'll go for salsa roja, guacamole, crane & pollo.

Love having this market just down the street. Prices are fair and there is a nice section of fresh produce.

When people ask me about the food, I always say that it's like you're walking into a 5-star chef's home, and he's making you whatever he thinks is good. You're getting a meal made with love, and the ingredients, seasonings, and careful care in preparation are proof of that. The vibes are homely. If you treat everyone with the same respect as if you were in their home, you'll feel right at home, with some of the best eating you'll experience in Los Angeles.

QUICK TAKE Get: Fish of the Day, Lamb, Moroccan-style Mushrooms Skip: Duck was our one miss Know: This is a good place for adventurous eaters who like sharing dishes and trying unexpected flavor combinations. Holy Saints does a nice job of making food feel creative without crossing over into "trying too hard." There are a lot of different influences running through the menu, and several dishes had us talking about the flavors and ingredients as much as the food itself. What we tried: Moroccan-style Mushrooms - A great example of what Holy Saints does well. Earthy, savory mushrooms with contrasting textures from the nuts, thinly sliced radish, herbs and crispy elements on top. There was a lot happening on the plate, but it all worked together. Definitely one to share. Fish of the Day - One of the highlights of the meal and something I would absolutely order again. The fish came over rice in a deeply flavored sauce with peppers, herbs and fresh vegetables. Colorful, comforting and much more interesting than the standard fish-and-vegetables preparation you see at a lot of restaurants. Lamb - Another winner. Rich, hearty and well seasoned, with the sauce pulling everything together. If you're visiting for the first time and like lamb, this would be high on my list. Duck - Good flavor, but it seemed like the duck sauce could have benefited from a little more time to rest before being sliced and served. We joked that we should have brought a bag, taken it home and eaten it as leftovers instead. Sometimes duck might just need a night to think about what it did. What I liked most about Holy Saints is that the food wasn't boring. The kitchen takes familiar ingredients and puts them together in ways you probably wouldn't think of yourself, which makes it a fun restaurant for ordering several things and sharing around the table.

I was looking for a spot to celebrate on my birthday week. I am a fan of the speakeasy in Pasadena…read moreas well & this spot is known for this vibe. There is the school house parking lot in the back that is $1 for the first hour or you can park on the street. Once I arrived the host was outside a venue which looks like a store. Once my party arrived they allowed us to walk down a hallway. We entered an elevator which opened to a dark hallway. The hallway was aesthetic with a knight standing in the corner. A wooden door opens & inside is the wine cellar. You're walked to your table. I ordered the Mozart charcuterie board & a cab sav red wine to share. The ambiance is nice & pleasing. It can become a bit loud when more people arrive. There is a self playing piano as well. The server was kind & open to our questions concerning wine selections. Since it was my birthday I was served icecream, crème brûlée, & dessert wine. Our bill was placed in a smut book lol. Overall an aesthetic spot for a date , birthday, or girls night.

Absolutely horrendous customer service…read more Once we finished eating, we waited over 40 minutes for someone to even walk by our table so we could order dessert and get our check. I have no idea what happened to our server, but we were completely forgotten about. On top of that, the food took an extremely long time to come out, and when it finally arrived, it was very bland and underwhelming. The table next to us had ordered a brand-new charcuterie board and waited so long just to order their wine that they eventually left the restaurant without even touching the charcuterie board. Overall, both the food and the service were extremely disappointing. Waiting that long just to get someone's attention, receive our food, and eventually pay the bill is unacceptable. Definitely not an experience we'll be repeating.

I would like to start this review by saying that this place was absolutely PACKED but the staff did such a great job to make sure we were well attended and keep the energy up with the match going on....hats off to them! Our buddies were able to secure a spot in the outside patio area to view the game. They offer QR code menus where you can pay and order with a table number connected to your table. This makes ordering so much easier, especially for such busy days like World Cup game days. I ordered the Carne Asada tacos, so delicious and had a nice little smoky taste. My husband ordered buffalo wings, fish and chips, and onion rings; he loved everything. Our first time trying this place located in Pasadena and it definitely won't be our last, thank you again, staff for such an amazing experience!!!
