Our grand adventure began in Healdsburg with an Indian lunch, because nothing says "let's go taste wine" quite like a stomach full of Curried Goat and Garlic Naan. Properly fortified, we set off for Limerick Lane Cellars, where the vines are so old they probably remember the Gold Rush. No, really--some of these Zinfandel vines date back to the late 1800s. The tasting room is small, but don't let that fool you--this is not some one-wine pony. Here, you're in for a lineup that ranges from a delicate apricot-hued Rosé to a parade of Old Vine Zins, each smoother than the last. (If you're expecting Central California spice bombs, think again.) The winery lets you discover the flavors for yourself rather than handing you a tasting note scavenger hunt of obscure fruits and foraged herbs. Our tasting experience took place in a cozy, three-walled navy blue tent--because why not add a little suspense? Equipped with heaters and vineyard views, we sipped our way through the lineup while storm clouds rolled over the distant hills, mustard flowers bloomed in every row, and we mentally prepared ourselves for the inevitable wine temptations. I am excited to share our experience at Limerick Lane Cellars. We stayed two nights with friends at the beautiful Farmhouse located next to the winery. The Farmhouse is stocked with everything you need for a wine country getaway, including a pool shaped like a wine bottle. They had yoga mats, every cooking utensil, games, glassware (for beer, shots, wine, and margaritas), indoor and outdoor seating, and it was bright and comfortable. The beds were really comfortable, and the master bedroom looked right out into the vineyards. At night, we sat out by the pool, drank wine, and stared up at the stars. The staff was very attentive to our needs throughout the stay. We had a wine tasting for 6 in the vineyard under the bright orange umbrellas. We walked over from the Farmhouse. We first toured the inside of the winery with Doug, a retired Fire Captain. Then we met Andy in the vineyard. He is a musician and a storyteller. He had a story for each wine we tasted. The Zinfandels we tasted were superb. We started our Healdsburg wine tasting tour early with our first reservation at 11:00 am with Limerick Lane Cellars. LLC is a beautiful, peaceful world away from the huge tourist wineries. Limerick Lane Zinfandel vines have been here since 1910 and what a great chance to taste century-old estate wines! With a fantastic sunny spring day under cloudless skies, we began in Limerick Lane's small but beautiful tasting room for a refreshing Rosé 2022. Afterwards we walked into the vineyards to a long picnic table for tastings of their renowned Zinfandel: Squatter's Hill Zinfandel followed by 1910 Block Zinfandel, and finally Marquis Zinfandel, all 2021 vintage. To each their own, but my favorite Zinfandel was the second, a 1910 planted estate wine where only 12 barrels were produced in 2021. Spectacular, full bodied, robust and ready to drink or even rest 10 years. Probably the best Zin I've ever tasted! Our private reservation for three was personable, fun and relaxing tasting wine outside amount the vines. Linda, our hostess, provided as much detail and history as we desired. She certainly knows the Russian River Appellation, and she made it an enjoyable and educational experience! read more

Our experience here was beyond amazing. The location is beautiful, away from the big crowds (tourists) and big name wineries. The grounds are GORGEOUS! Very remote, think beautiful hills, green grass, sunshine and flowers. Our host was exceptional. He was down to earth and casually yet dramatically told us the amazing historical tale about this winery. I loved how he explained everything - from the families history, wine progression throughout the years, tasting notes, property facts, literally everything was presented in a digestible and incredibly amazing manner! Far too often do vineyards just pour a tasting, give you two sentences of information, then leave. This is different, amazing for the wine connoisseur or people wanting to learn more. Of course their Zins are amazing! We love zinfandel so we were so excited to be here. Their Zins drink lighter than most so think more like a pinot. Amazing flavor, lighter body and perfectly suited for everyday. Prices are spot on too and a bargain for the quality of wine you get in this region! We had a VIP tasting with Andy at Limerick Lane. It was the perfect quiet, relaxing afternoon with an up close discussion and tasting of old school hand farmed vineyards. Andy was such a gracious host, explaining the methods of sustainable farming of the vineyards and details about some of the oldest vines in Sonoma. We basked under the gentle sun while sipping sauvignon blanc, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and rosé. We tasted 3 bottles from Jesse Katz's collection, The Setting, as well as 3 bottles from Limerick Lane Cellars. There's a lot of love put into these wines and you can taste it in the final product. I am typically a dry red girl but I found a sauvignon blanc with a spicy yet smooth finish that I had to add to my collection. I don't particularly like wine, but I do like this place. It's small, charming, and far off the beaten path. Feels like Old Sonoma through and through. Their zinfandel is a solid bottle if you like that kind of thing. The friends I was staying with do, and have a half a garage full of the stuff. A truly special spot! I've been to Limerick Lane Cellars twice in the last several years - the first time with friends for a tour and wine tasting outside behind the winery, and because it was so wonderful, the second time, I brought a big group of extended family to celebrate my mother's birthday. Magical, both times! The staff are a delight, and the wines (especially the Zinfandels and their new white and rosé) are fantastic. We will drink their wines and remember the joyful celebration for years to come! This winery has become a special place for my family. For special events, I particularly recommend it. For my mom's birthday, we created a whole birthday weekend - renting both the vineyard house next door to the winery (on VRBO, a farm stay that gives you an immersive experience of old Sonoma wine making), and also the hilltop house (also on VRBO, walking distance down Limerick Lane). We threw a small birthday celebration at the Hilltop House, entirely arranged, planned, and hosted by the staff at Limerick Lane, followed by a special tour, tasting, and lunch out in the vineyards - next to the 1910 Zinfandel block, under sun shelters - at Limerick Lane Cellars the next day. This was a great way to kick off a few days of wine tasting in Sonoma County. It's a small family owned winery down a quiet, scenic back road. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are sold through a mailing list allocation. Our initial tasting was of the Syrah Grenache, Rocky Knoll Zinfandel, Russian River Zinfandel and Hail Mary. All were great and we bought two bottles of each and signed up to be on the mailing list. We walked through the vines and tasted grapes from vines that were 100+ years old. We got to try two wines that haven't been released yet - 1910 Block Zinfandel and 1023 Zinfandel. Both were great and I hope to be able to buy some when it's available. If you're a fan of Zinfandel this is well worth a stop. Appointment only, so be sure to make one. read more

Small, family-run winery that produces small runs of stellar wines. If you appreciate zins and unique blends, this is the place to be! I found this by doing a search on Wine Enthusiast and filtering for varietals and ratings of 90+. They popped up with several different wines that were 94 pts and above, so it was clear that I had to check them out. As others have said, they consistently produce good quality wines- it's not just winning a few medals here and there. We made an appt and they were super flexible when our flight plans changed and our arrival time shifted more than once. It's a small tasting room, but the owners/winemakers are very accommodating and make a point to make everyone feel special. They are low-key and don't pressure anyone to buy. (Of course a purchase will waive your tasting fee) We learned about their microclimate in the valley just east of downtown Healdsburg- it's allows a warmer, drier air and the hillside provides good drainage- both of which are great for zinfandel grapes. In any case, come here for the wine (not in search of some fancy salon and entertainment) and you won't be disappointed. Will be back next time for sure! read more

Then we walked out into the vineyards to a private spot in such an amazing setting. Bucolic! Andy Tester helped us out. The wines were so amazing and the tasting was personal and engaging. Many wineries in Sonoma have become corporate and pretentious, which makes Limerick Lane a welcome change of scene. They are small, truly family run and welcoming. The biggest thing to note before you go is that it is by appointment only. It is a bit of the drive from the freeway, so it is worth a call to see if they can accommodate you. The tasting room is small and attached the cellar, with interesting decor. Mary was our host, and she was fantastic! We fell in love with the wine with the first sip of their Rose. It was a rainy day, but during the summers they pour right by the grapevines, we will be back during nicer weather. read more

Limerick Lane is a great place to visit if you are in the Healdsburg area. It is easy to find since it is located on Limerick Lane. We were early for our appointment, but the host welcomed us in. We tasted some great Zins and we got a chance to walk out into the vineyard which was a lot of fun. The only downside is that they were sold out of some of their Zins. Made the mistake of only buying one bottle to drink that night and then we ended up drinking other wines that people brought over. We gave our Limerick Lane bottle to one of our friends to take home to enjoy. I look forward to hearing about how much she enjoyed it. read more

This was one of our first stops on the way up to Mendocino last weekend, and it's true, they have top notch zins, unpretentious service, and a nice, friendly, bright tasting room with a great view of the vines right outside the window. The syrah was very good, from Collins Vineyard, and they had a nice sampling of a few zins. I have more of a taste for syrah, but found a few zins to like here too. The Furmint is quite interesting, and you'll likely only find it here, which might be worth the trip in itself. If you read up a bit on Furmint you'll find out what puttonyos are and they make this a quite sweet wine - a little too sweet for my taste, but definitely worth a sample. read more

Small boutique winery. Nice friendly folk. The Pinot noir wines are Stupendous! Grape flavor laden, low tannin, aromatic, cherry aromas galore. I've tasted just about every Pinot Noir made from Washington State to Santa Barbara. I have at least one bottle of most of them in my wine collection. Limerick Lane is special, a cut above most others for sheer mouth pleasure. The alcohol buzz is pretty mellow as well. Limerick Lane had been on my radar prior to planning a recent trip to the Sonoma Valley during the week of Thanksgiving, but by the time my wife and I had arrived, we had somehow overlooked it. Fortunately for us, we ran into a gentleman over at Benziger Family Winery who informed us about LL's recent crop troubles. Turns out that this past summer had been particularly hard on their zinfandel and turned pretty much all of them into raisins. This is a winery that produces about 90% (maybe more) zinfandel. So you can imagine just how devastating a blow that is to such a small company. Needless to say we made it our business to get over there in an effort to support them any way we could. Upon arriving there we met Gina Riner who is their director of sales and marketing. This lovely young lady graciously welcomed us in, toured us through the facility (love the pool shaped like a wine bottle!) and conversed with us for what might have been about 45 minutes to an hour. She allowed us to taste pretty much their entire line INCLUDING the Late Harvest Furmint (which I believe has now sold out). Unfortunately we were on a budget and couldn't purchase more than one bottle per winery, but we were more than happy to hand our money over to Gina and Limerick Lane in order to purchase one of their 2007 Collins Vineyard Zins (which BTW made Food & Wine's 2011 Wine Guide TOP 10 out of over 1,000 bottles). This was a wonderful tasting experience. I knew to make an appointment ahead, so came in to someone saying my name, and welcoming me. First impressions matter!! The location is off the beaten path, but worth a little drive to taste exceptional wine. The spring wildflowers were in bloom, so we went out to the vineyard, glass in hand, and was given a tutorial on why the wildflowers were chosen to enhance the nutrients of the soil. I have tasted in many places locally as well as in other regions, and this was one of my favorite experiences for both the wine and the host. The family run business wants you to have a relaxed time, and become knowledgeable about their product. My favorite of the day was the Russian River Zinfandel, but their Syrah blend was also good. The grounds (30 acres) are surrounded by beautiful countrysides. The baristas are charismatic and very good conversationalists. I would say this is a must stop location, as it really beats most of the over-visited larger companies. As wine is subjective, I recommend that you have the taste flight and decide which one suits your palate best. Even if you don't find your heart's content, you will have had a nice visit and met some interesting people. I recommend the 2013 Estate Zinfandel and 2013 Syrah/Grenache. Enjoy! read more

Limerick Lane is a terrific, small family run operation. They make top quality zins! We tasted the zin block series, 1970, 1934, and 1910. All are delicious and we can't wait to get back for more. The new owner, Jake, was there and he is a super nice, down to earth guy. He really cares about the integrity of the wine. They spend $0 on marketing and something like 80% of their wine production is sold through the wine club. Many times stuff sells out through the club before it ever sees full retail release so if you like the wine, join the club! PS: The location is a very short drive right off highway 101. I could give them 5 stars on the wine alone, but they also have a nice tasting room set among the vines to really merit the rating. Plus, I love the fact that it's a small, family owned and operated winery. They make some superb zins and blends that feature petite sirah, syrah and grenache. Very much up my alley. They consistently get excellent ratings in Wine Spectator which are well deserved. The tasting room is by appointment only so it's not crowded. We came when they first opened at 10am (love that too!), and we were the only party present. I got on their mailing list so I can get first dibs on their wine allocation. A charming destination just south of Healdsburg, making it a good start to your wine trip (or a capper if you're coming from the north). We made this our first stop before getting some lunch in Healdsburg, and we were really pleased with the decision! On a nice day, the small road and winery give you that "quaint" winery feeling that many people are looking for once they are out of the city. We ended up being the only ones in the tasting room, which was fairly small but had window benches with a cool breeze and a great view out in the neighboring vineyards. We got to walk back into the facility and out into the vineyard out back to take a closer look as we sampled the wines. Not sure if this is standard practice, but it was a nice touch. Conversation was easy and friendly, and we learned a great deal about the winery history and the vintages themselves. Following our tasting, we ended up with a great syrah-grenache blend. Limerick Lane Cellars is a small place slightly out of the way, but well worth the visit. Peter greeted us as if he were expecting us. The views from the tasting room are very nice looking out into the vines (literally feet away from the window). We tried a few wines and then headed outdoors to check out the VERY old zin vines. Peter explained how the vines get older they reach different layers of sediment which then produce a different wine each season. These guys where as big as tree trunks! Limerick Lane also has a big wine bottle shaped pool which is used for out door events at the winery. They have a small selection of wines but they are clearly crafted with love. I would suggest checking out Limerick Lane because they take the time to educate you about their process and wines. read more

Being Irish I was immediately suckered in....but what great wine and service we received. The sign said appointment only but the luck of the Irish was with me and we got to taste with some other nice folk. All wines were superb and we left with a few bottles. We did a tour and tasting at Limerick Lane for a business conference - roughly 35 people. Originally, I contacted them to set up a private dinner event on the property, but because they are a small winery we would have had to rent most of the equipment. We decided it would be easier to have a dinner elsewhere, but they were kind enough to offer our entire team a tour and tasting! Andy lead our tour, he was amazing! So charismatic and knowledgeable on their history, and wines, and even had funny stories. If you have the opportunity to visit Limerick Lane, I would highly suggest it.
