Gorgeous day. Gorgeous place. Gorgeous views.
    Emily J.

This is a great dry, cool-weather hike. We got the second part right, since we did encounter a bit of mud along the way. This was my friend and my anti-Black Friday, #optoutside adventure and I'm really happy we chose this location. (Even with the mud.) The air was crisp with clear views and I had multiple moments of gratitude for living in such an incredibly beautiful place. Our hiking guidebook described the route we took as "athletic," probably because of the 1,000 feet of elevation gain over 2 miles. We workout and hike a lot and we were still huffing and puffing at times. As far as our route, we went Ohlone to Manzanita to Lime Ridge to Paraiso. Wth a little side trip along the way, it was about 3.5 miles total. While some spots are well-marked, others are not, and this led to a few moments where we weren't quite sure where we were and where we were going. We figured it out just fine, although I could see how getting lost is an option.

Lime Ridge is a long park, stretching from near Concord's Cowell Road almost to Mt. Diablo State Park, thankfully saved from development by future-minded civic leaders. Judging from some of the fire roads, there may have been development planned for it. There are three parts. North of Treat Blvd, it's a wide-open meadow with steep hills where the dog can run free and mountain bike fanatics can speed downhill. South of Ygnacio Valley Road, it's lots of rocky hills laced with good hiking trails and wildflowers. Between these two spots is a no-mans-land with terrible access, therefore you get this whole portion to yourself. And views, views, views. And sun, sun, sun. There is little shade on Lime Ridge, and the nearest store is a mile away. Bring water. Just keep your expectations in check, and you'll be fine. It's not a jaw-dropping gorgeous spot. But it's a good spot to unwind after work, strolling the trails, civilization in view but seemingly far away.

Absolutely loved the view from the peak! I rode my bike up this morning and it was just so peaceful

I've spent a fair amount of time cycling all over Lime Ridge. There's a great single track leading up to the Ridge from the tunnel that passes under Ygnacio Valley Road. A seldom visited park with lots of interesting geological features as well as signs of the mining of the limestone that went on here decades ago. There's a great hike through Oak Woodland to the top of the ridge starting on the Ygnacio Valley Road side. It's called the Blue Oak Trail. Be cautious for mt. bikers coming descending. They aren't suppose to be on the trail, but most mt. bikers can't stop themselves from riding a beautiful single track trail such as this one. I always give them a wide berth and smile. No need to play the authority figure of a ranger since that's not our job or responsibility. Other than that trail, the Open Space is very exposed. Somewhat similar to Shell Ridge. Always keep your visual sense open for Rattlesnakes. They will not harm you if you leave them alone and don't suddenly frighten you. Stay away from climbing around rocky areas where you cannot see where you're putting your hands or feet.

Lime Ridge is a huge open space park which is in Walnut creek and Concord between Treat Blvd and Ygnacio Valley Road. It near the Boundary Oak golf course. This open space is a great place for a hike. You can see hawks, great views, cows, and rarely a coyote in the wee morning hours. Good place to take landscape photos, or take the dog on a long walk or go for a challenging up hill run.

I really enjoy walking/hiking this area. I try and get out early to beat the heat. The trails and hills are moderate and I think good for any fitness level. I usually run and walk most of time. There's always people out waking or biking so I feel pretty safe doing the hike alone.

While this park is a bit off the beaten path, I will say there is so much to do here for your kiddo (or let's be honest, you too haha). I feel this park has a lot of space and seems to be pretty safe, with Astro turf that I tend to not see at most smaller parks. There is plenty of parking across the street and nearby ~ with walking paths, a community center across the way, and picnic tables that we've seen many birthday parties/gatherings at. There are swings for all ages which for us right now is very nice, and it seems the area is split between age range which is also cool to see. There are fun 'hills' to climb with cardboard to slide down (this is where the Astro turf comes into play), and plenty of slides/equipment of all kinds for interactive and solo play. There are pretty nice 'larger' entertaining pieces of equipment (like a pirate ship that moves/shakes) for the older kiddos, and it's just overall a pretty epic playground to see/be apart of. Well done, can't wait to be back!

A nice walking path goes through the good-sized park, offering wonderful views of the lush lawn and large mature trees. A host of families with their young children were enjoying the playground areas, and locals with their canine companions were out too. A few picnic tables are available, or - as one young woman did - just spread out your towel and have lunch on the lawn. After walking for a while we found a bench near the edge of the park and just vegged out soaking up the sun. A swim center and nice pool is here, although it looks like it's only used in the summer for recreational and limited lap swimming - an under-used facility in my mind. Why not year-round lap swimming? Next door is the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, and although it was closed (open Weds-Sun), a young docent had a red tailed hawk with her and was giving a nice educational spiel. There is no dedicated parking - the one negative. Street parking nearby or in the neighborhoods is the only alternative.

However, we did notice a couple of things. The park is pretty decent sized for an urban park. Lots of grass, trees, picnic tables on one side of the street. There is also a public pool (closed while we were there) and an unisex restroom that was reasonably clean. There were individuals, couples and groups of people enjoying the park. In one area were some musicians with guitars and possibly other instruments. We don't know they were there for practice or a class but when we arrived, one person was playing a song that sounded quite good on acoustic guitar. We also saw others who were picnicking with a dog in tow. Everyone was pretty mellow. The dogs didn't bark, and no one was playing excessively loud music. What could make the experience better for us? We didn't fully explore the park so we don't know exactly how large it is but we're always fans of parks with dog play areas. They don't have to be large, but they do need to be clean with running water and some shade. Plus, there should be separate areas for large and small dogs. Beyond that, locals should feel lucky to have such a nice park to relax in.
