This is a letter I recently sent to Lightning Lube complimenting them on their excellent service: "Lightning Lube 5601 N. Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL 60646 Re: Excellent Service Dear Glenn & Rich, I just want to thank you for your excellent service. Recently I was in for an oil change and Glenn pointed out that the seal between the transmission and engine was leaking and, in addition, that the seal on the oil pressure sending unit was also leaking. Since my SUV was still under warranty, I took it into the dealer recommended by Glenn and they determined that everything Glenn had found was exactly correct. Thus, the dealer kept my SUV for 2 days and repaired both leaks. Without Glenn's watchful eye and helpful advice, it is entirely possible that these leaks would have continued beyond the warranty period. As it was, the repair bill was a mere $100.00 rather than over $3,000.00. This is the second time that I have received helpful assistance from you. At one point a while ago, Rich noticed that the lock on my spare tire was rusted and Rich attempted to fix it without charge. This is why my family and I have come to you for oil changes on all our cars for the last 20+ years and why I we will continue to do so. You guys are GREAT! Beware of this place! Advertises a synthetic oil and FILTER change for 69.99 that turns in to be over 100.00. They charged me an extra 15.95 for the filter in Addition to the 69.99. Plus i was charged 10.00 for extra oil. Beware these guys are friendly scammers. Gave me a bunch of BS when i called! 35 to 70 dollars is what a synthetic oil change should cost not over 100 dollars. Watch out for these scams! Ask for total price with tax before doing. Caveat emptor with this place or you will be ripped off too. read more

A wonderful, locally owned-neighborhood oil shop. I've lived in the Jefferson Park neighborhood for 20 years now, and I'm ashamed to admit this was my first visit and pretty upset that I hadn't gone here until recently. I couldn't be more happy and satisfied with the service Rich and his tech guy provided. They were very friendly and engaging and explained the whole process entirely - I know it's a simple Oil Change but having them explain to you what they are going to do and what does and doesn't look right can make a whole world of difference. Yes, the prices were a little higher than most but I'd give the extra $10-$20 to know my car is in good hands and that the oil, filter, drain plug with proper gasket, complete chassis lube (paid additional 2.99), and tire pressure are all correct and new. I am new to Chicago and found this place with the help of Siri and Yelp reviews. I was unsure of who to trust to change the oil in my new (to me) vehicle. I did not regret going to Lightning. They were the most friendly of any lube place I have ever been to in my life as well as efficient and fair. I was reading reviews on this place while I was sitting in their waiting area getting my oil changed today. Having some appointments in the area I decided to stop in. Great place, great service, just wish it were closer because I'd prefer to take all of my vehicles here. I'll definitely be back but unfortunately living in the 1400 S loop area, just not as often as I'd like. My wife has a high end car that we used to routinely take back to the dealer (right where I bought it) to have the oil change performed. About 2 years ago we stopped doing that after the very dealer we bought the car from failed to put the oil filter on properly causing the car to leak oil very quickly. Long story short the car was driven about 40 miles with virtually no oil left in the car. Ridiculous mistake. Point is, shoddy work can occur anywhere and it's foolish to suggesting taking a car back to the dealer for an oil change (where you'll also typically pay more), will automatically ensure you better service. From what I gather after speaking with the owner they've been in business for around 25 yrs (and there's a reason for that). Long live Lightening Lube! read more

Couldn't take your car to a nicer couple of guys. The speed, convenience and price of one of the 'oil change chain' places, but are super nice and friendly. Found them here on Yelp and stopped in when I realized I was overdue. In spite of having a full bay and 2 cars in front of me, they did a full oil change (with new wiper blades and air filter) and got me out the door in 20ish minutes, since I was running late for an appointment. Sent me coupons and a reminder and just generally acted like they cared if I came back - and were happy when I did! read more

These two gentlemen have been changing the oil on our cars for years. Emphatically polite and friendly, they remember my name and my cars, always check the fluid levels and tire pressure, and as long as I've been going to them, I've never had a problem with either vehicle (it's not a world-ending thing when you run out of wiper fluid, but it is a damn nuisance, right?). They even come to the house to start my car for me when the battery croaks. I have no reason to ever go anywhere else. read more

I used to go to midas to have my oil changed, but when I got sick of them telling me something was broken on my car every time or making me wait 6 hours, I decided to look elsewhere. I lived around the corner from Lightning Lube, and a couple years ago decided to give it a shot. These guys have been amazing! Never have they made me wait more than an hour for my car and never have hassled me to do anything else. Today I had a tire blow out on the car at 5 am and after dealing with numerous tire places that were going to make me wait 3-5 days and charge me $300.00 for 1 tire I walked over and told the guys what was going on. Immediately they gave me a contact and even called them for me to make sure they helped me. By 3 pm, I had a brand new tire on my camaro and it cost me half the price! I sent the guys pizza to thank them for the help but I wish I could do more. As a girl living in a city far away from home and family, these guys made my life so much easier. I highly recommend them, and would never go anywhere else for my car! read more
