I'm a retired professional mechanic. I replaced the front brakes on my 1997 Chevy Astro van. Immediately afterwards, a rusted out brake line "popped" in the back, spewing brake fluid everywhere. prior to retirement, this would NOT be a dificult thing for me to fix. (The operative word here is RETIRED) The vehicle needed to be up on a lift to do the repair, so that took ME out of the equation. Enter BJ's Auto Repair! I spoke with Joe, who treated me with dignity & professionalism. I feel like he went above & beyond, while extending me some professional courtesy. He didn't have to give me a break. Other shops wanted more. I received my van back later the next morning, & the brake pedal was high & firm. The brakes performed like it was a new van! I love a good, clean, honest shop! As a woman who admittedly knows very little about cars past the very basics, it can be hard to find a good auto shop. Well, I've finally found that place! Everyone at BJ's was extremely thorough and knowledgeable. I went in for an oil change, but I also asked them to check to see why my windshield wiper fluid wasn't spraying. They took the time to show me what was wrong and why it happened (cracked windshield wiper fluid pump because of a missing fog light cover).The owner, Joe, was so kind. He got the part the same day, and made sure to accommodate me coming back later with my schedule. Plus I really feel like his prices are EXTREMELY fair. Zero star: If you are a PERSON OF COLOR, don't waste your time and money. I asked Jim if he had discounts for the quote he gave me and he yelled at me and refused to fix my car (even after I offered to pay the full quote) saying his shop is not dollar general! Over the years, I have brought no less than 6 different vehicles to BJs. There is simply no other mechanic anywhere that I would trust than Bill, Jim and LJ at BJ's. Always engaging, honest and priced right, they stand behind their work. I've had two or three warranty repairs over the years with no questions asked -- they did the work and sent me home with a $0 bill. Oil changes, major repairs, maintenance, odd issues -- all taken care of BJ's. Need something done today? If they have the opening they'll get it done. Otherwise, they'll work with you on schedule and get it done. When my daughter left for college one of my priorities was to find a trustworthy mechanic in her area. Bill helped with that. BEWARE! CAUTION! The owner Jim is a crook and has no integrity and bullies his customers. My car was towed her by my roadside assistance so he knew I had no place to go. I told him it was the battery and he still tried to charge me $60 for an inspection when all he did was test the dead battery. He then charged me a fee of $68 to "retrain my battery to my computer". THIS IS MADE UP AND FRAUD! The reason I know is because he installed a USED BATTERY that he charged me $290 for and it failed 2 weeks later!!! When I went to Merlin's to get it replaced, they told me it was only $50 to install it and did not have to "retrain my computer". This guy is a crook and a scumbag and I will Be reporting him to the attorney general and the BBB. Do not go here unless you want to be lied to and ripped off and conned and also yelled at by him!!!! read more

Not enough can be said about this place. I have been taking my car here for as long as I've been old enough to drive. My friends, family and neighbors would not take their cars anywhere else. Jim, Bill and the crew are always upfront and honest about what is going with your car and will even let you know when something is not even necessary!! There have been a couple of times when I have gone to a Jiffy Lube or the dealership in a pinch and quote me these outrageous prices and tasks that "are needed". As soon as I come back to my home auto shop, Jim cuts it down to the nitty gritty to tell me what is necessary and who is full of crap. I haven't used these guys in a while, but I remember one experience with them in particular that is worth writing about, but happened before I was a Yelp member. I took my Eclipse through a car wash and when I left the wash, there was a knocking sound in one of my wheels. BJ's was in the neighborhood, so I stopped there. They took a look at the car and half an hour later I had it back and repaired. The bill? $18. That's right 1 followed by 8 and then nothing. Eighteen. This was the only time I ever went there because of the location, but for those who live closer, just know that these guys care about their customers. I decided to wait to review until I had my car back for a while. I took my toyota camry to BJ'S due to issues with the AC. Though I had to get it basically replaced, I'm thoroughly satisfied. The last place (a different shop in River Grove) I took it to, apparently didn't do quality work or use quality parts. Lesson learned, I should have looked to see if any reviews mentioned AC repair for the other shop. I took my 2013 Taurus in, asked Jimmy to do my brakes, put air in my tires, and read my engine codes. Jimmy called me and said I didn't need brake pads, but that turning my front rotors would get rid of the high speed braking noise & pulsation. He said the "tire pressure low" light was because I had a nail in one tire. He fixed that for $15. My car has 117K miles on it, and Jimmy saw that I needed a new serpentine belt. I had overlooked that. He saved me from a breakdown there. When I picked my car up, Jimmy old me that he'd turned the rear rotors too, just to be sure. The engine codes came back to a fuel evaporator thingie ma jigger. They troubleshot it, replaced the part, fixed it. Their work was good, honest, affordable, timely. :0) read more

Typically I do not do reviews, however, after getting my car repaired at BJ's I felt compelled. Keep in mind that for the 11 or so years I have been driving and have owned a car, I have ALWAYS done my own repairs and maintenance. Unfortunately, a lack of time and cold weather did not necessarily afford me that luxury this time around. I was initially concerned about trusting someone else 'under' my car. However, Jimmy is an exceptionally honest man, and his flexibility with regards to my issue put me at ease. The workmanship was great, and the time from dropping he car off, to knowing the issue, and then to fixing it was extremely quick!
