Since the original Lhasa Fast Food closed after the fire, I must confess it has been hard to trace the original owner's lineage. At one point there was a Lhasa Fresh Food, then Lhasa Fast Food again, and a separate Lhasa Restaurant. This location appears to be the real successor, and rather confusingly is also referred to as Lhasa Restaurant on some menus.
For those who are aware, this all started behind a cell phone shop on 74th Street back when the neighborhood was still primarily Indian and Pakistani. It is now almost entirely Bangladeshi and Nepalese/Tibetan/Bhutanese, but in those days this was the only spot for Tibetan style momos. They do not have interesting preparations like tandoori momos or chaat momos as you might get at Momo Crave, but the simple chive filling in the steamed dumplings remains one of my favorites in the city.
It is still so good with a mix of their dry chili flakes and soy sauce. The water of the chives mixes with the sauce almost like a soup dumpling, resulting in a delectable concoction. I do miss the ambiance of the old shop though. read more
