Everytime I order I am told there is a 30+ minute wait. That is fine. I get to Lettie's and there are groups of people waiting for chicken. I had to wait for 5 minutes even though I called ahead. No big deal. I like to wait for my food and get it when it is hot out of the oven or fryer. I get home and again the chicken is luke warm. I live 2 minutes away. So it takes 15 minutes to cook the chicken and 15 minutes to let it sit and get cold before it gets put in a box for customers? It would have been the best chicken in Delaware if it was still warm, but since I needed to microwave it after I got home I don't know what to think anymore. This place lives up to the hype. The fried chicken was amazing, cooked to order so be prepared to wait. The sides--potato salad, macaroni salad, cucumber salad, broccoli salad, scalloped corn--all very good! 4 of us ordered quite the variety as it all looked so good. Everyone was also very friendly and patient as we tried to figure it out. We opted for takeout, but there were a few tables available inside and picnic tables outside if you are in the area. I just heard about this place. I'm sorry I didn't know about it sooner. It is a half hour ride for me. It is worth the trouble. I took the opportunity to get the beef stew. I haven't had beef stew in years. It was so flavorful. It evoked fond memories from Fall and Winter days of my childhood when beef stew was a staple. I will have to come back to order some of the other delights on the menu. I am handicapped. I called when I got there because it was a little dark to head up the ramp. As everyone seems to say already in the reviews below, the fried chicken at Lettie's is one of a kind and is broasted (fried in a pressure cooker so there's less oil absorbed and results in an airier piece of fried chicken). Call your order ahead of time to make sure you don't have to wait - about 20 minutes is enough for a regular order. A friend and I ate here and ordered a leg, thigh, and breast each with sides of mac and cheese and a fresh salad that was being made as we walked in. We liked it all, but I thought the mac and cheese was a bit sweet which I didn't love. The guy behind the counter had my friend do a little dance to get some hot sauce haha.. all in good fun and it shows these people are good natured. There is parking behind Lettie's in a little gravel lot, or you could also park in Swift Park's parking lot next door. The reason I give Lettie's 4 stars is because a couple weeks after eating at the restaurant, my company had Lettie's catered to an event and the broasted chicken strips are nowhere as delicious as the bone-in chicken on the regular menu. Wow. Had no idea this modest looking house serves such fantastic fried chicken. I live a distance away- was meeting someone who lives close - he urged this establishment. Chicken cooked to order so there was a bit of a wait - there is a nice park next door and they have a covered porch - wait went fast. No eat in/ take out only. The chef came out to talk w us - his conversation was equally as stimulating as his food. Sandwich's sounded good but the attraction is the chicken. Perfect seasoning. Great fry crunch. I gave up meat 7 years ago and if i was going to go back, this is the place I would go. The chicken smelled so so so so good. Instead I ordered tuna salad, egg salad and a slice of key lime pie. The key lime pie filling was appropriately tangy, but the real standout was the crust. The egg salad was creamy and eggy. And the tuna salad was excellent. Walking into Lettie's is like walking into your mom's house with food in corning ware trays. The service is a little spotty with folks in sight furiously at work making various food. They look up every once in awhile and tell you to hang on. Eventually someone gets around to taking your order. The wait is worth it and reminded me of the focus and work I saw in my mom's kitchen every night. So make yourself known, have a seat and enjoy the slice of home. read more

The best fried chicken - so moist and tender, accompanied by delicious macaroni and cheese, delightful broccoli salad, perfect potato salad and yummy cole slaw. Save room for dessert - terrifically tart key lime pie, decadent chocolate cake and a special surprise banana butterscotch pie. Cute place in an older converted home and run by what I'm guessing is a family. Always good to see and help local businesses when possible. Some fantastic fried chicken. My wife and I have been driving to Philly for decent fried chicken and even further for really good chicken. The breading is crispy and moist. Saw on Yelp that this place was voted best fried chicken in Delaware and had to visit while I was in the area on vacation. Parking is a little difficult here and there's not much space inside to eat. It's probably best to do takeout. I loved my fried chicken! It was extra crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. I also tried the coleslaw, biscuit and scalloped corn with my meal. You do have to be patient or call ahead because it's made when ordered. Worth a try if you're in the area and if you want to eat there, go early because there's not much seating. Delicious "broasted" fried chicken is as good as it gets, although I like my breasts to be a bit meatier. They also have very good biscuits and insanely good banana pudding. I had posted this review to Facebook but after the response and lack of apology I felt I should share it here. ___________________________________________________________ I don't know what to say because I have never had the chance to eat her chicken. I can only rate the service. The first time we went we were told they were out of chicken so we left. That was several years ago. Then we decided to return...there were so many orders not filled it would be over 45 minute wait. We left again. Today we decided to give it one more try. We walk in...only two cars in the lot...we got a chance. We order an 8 piece from the very nice girl at the front but we are told it will take 15 to 20 minutes. Ugh...we asked why, I was pissed I had to wait yet again but we decided to wait. The Lettie comes out and proceeds to go on a rant about how great her chicken is and WE have to realize we have to wait for something good and tells us to go to KFC because their chicken is good too. I would not compare my awesome chicken to KFC. I told her to just stop her rant we were fine. No she went on and finally went into the back. If you've been to Lettie' it's very small. You can here evetything. She proceeded to talk about us to everyone in the kitchen. Very rude. .. Not impressed with Lettie...and once again no chicken. We requested for our money back and left. I wanted to update my review because we just had Lettie's cater a party for 100 people at our home. I didn't know that they did catering, but they do! The food (as always) was awesome. In addition to their regular amazing fried chicken, they did a gluten free fried chicken option for us. Our gluten free friends couldn't have been more thrilled- it was delicious. Tom came himself to oversee the event and make sure everything ran smoothly. They did such a great job. And I actually got to have fun at the party instead of emptying trash cans and refilling food trays. I can't recommend Lettie's highly enough. I'd definitely use them again for a party. I'm a regular now, 2-3 times a week . . . I'm recently single, and cooking a great meal for one person is just not fun. A great cook myself, I don't like the typical take out food. Meh. But I finally tried Lettie's as everyone in Hockessin and beyond raves about it. Their entire menu and daily meals are just outstanding -- soups are to die for; and the sides are all fantastic. Their dedication to providing old timey great comfort food is just to die for. Every meal I get there is like getting a hug from my mother and grandmother. I generally look at the monthly menu, and choose days I just have to order from. Then I get in there, and see lots of other goodies in the display case. I rarely walk out with just one meal. Most people get take out. Their kitchen in teeny tiny, and they all work SO hard at keeping the quality up, and their customers happy. They come from an established Hockessin family, and their reputation is very important to them. As a very happy customer, I would help them out any way I could. I have found the staff and owners to be extremely friendly, hard-working and fun. Such a real gem. I'm so grateful they're here, and I finally got it! read more

When I saw that theirs is made with the flat Pennsylvania Dutch style dumplings, I knew that I would love it. Seriously Overrated! You would obviously rated the best as I assume you must have been the only participant in the competition. I went there thinking It would be Delaware's best fried chicken. But this turned out to be the worst fried chicken in Delaware. The chicken had the raw flavor and the meat was still pink. The chicken had thrice the oil content than Popeye's. The dine in ambience is worst and the teenage girl who worked there was rude. . I told her that the chicken was uncooked and left the plate after having the first bite. Then I went to the counter to tell this to her, she didn't even bother to respond. She just told she would look into it. I haven't understood what research she's gonna conduct on the left over chicken. This chicken is really a piece of shit. Coming to the ambience and the appearance of the staff really sucks.
