The best meal I had in Quebec. Everything from the wine to the desert to the shots that the owner gave us at the end of the night. Amazing food and service next time I'll be here I will eat there every night.

Old wooden snow shoes on the ceiling, sharpie written signatures on the old walls, window sills etc. with shutter style windows that open to rue St. Louie. It was full and had a line out the door. +++. Food is Canadian. I had their version of shepherds pie and it was the best one I've had in 3 decades including those I've tried in England, Scotland and Ireland!! Well balanced combination and smooth mash potatoes. Their homemade ketchup is amazeBallS! It does NOT look like Heinz by the way. I tried to buy some at their store next door but were out of it :/. Idk about their other dishes but I would eat their shepherds pie every week! +++ Service is friendly prompt and well informed staff. +++. Well, they all spoke English and not a lick of French. However, they do offer some traditional Quebec cuisine. They have communal bathrooms downstairs for both genders. Great size food portions. Slightly expensive because they know they will get a lot of tourists. Service was good and attentive. -foie gras poele (pan seared foie gras) 5 - kind of expensive but really tasty. Cut a piece of foie gras with the brioche, and eat it together with the bacon bits and creamy corn. -le pate chinois (Quebec shepperd's pie) 5 - this was better than the meat pie. The braised beef was tender. It was delicious when you eat the beef with the mashed potatoes and creamy corn. This one is worth getting. -la tourtiere facon buche (Quebec meat pie) 3.5 - it has Quebec duck, Nagano pork, and AAA beef together in the pie. I wasn't loving it. I thought it was just okay, it could use more flavor. -maple taffy 4 - kind of sweet from the maple. You might as well try since you're here. They're known for their maple syrup.

Apparently, their cocktails were not the only thing that shined, as their food was also supposed to be so great that the place was a late-night chef hangout. I was wandering around Old Quebec while multitasking to find a dinner destination on my phone. I spotted a bar stool available for reservation at JJacques and spontaneously grabbed it and ran to hail a cab to the Saint Roch neighborhood. Thankfully, I had researched ahead of time to learn that the place was not the easiest to find. My cab pulled up in front of the non-descript metal door in an alleyway, and the driver had his doubts that it was actually the restaurant, but I assured him that I just had to ring the doorbell to enter. I exited the vehicle and pressed the Ring, which triggered a warm greeting from a man inside. He led me through two thick sets of curtains and into their stunning bar area. There was a very lengthy dining counter and bar with velvet stools and views of the open prep area, as well as a few large u-shaped booths. Just beyond that I caught a peak of their dining room that looked cool as well. The place was really just a vibe! The atmosphere made you feel like you were cool enough to be invited to a hidden outlet of culinary and beverage delights. I was escorted to my seat at the bar, where the gracious Francis kept me entertained throughout the experience. Naturally, I wanted to get a drink, so I looked through their custom cocktails and their list of around 175 bottles of wine. For some reason, most of the mixed drinks did not pique my curiosity, except the Golden Nail, which included Hornitos Plata Tequila, Mezcal Del Maguey, Mais Violet, piment ancho, and cacao. The boozy concoction offered a hint of sweet chocolate and was served in a rocks glass with one large ice cube. It was a truly delicious cocktail. However, I did notice that many of the drinks used liquors that were not particularly what I would call "top shelf", such as Absolut, which I found surprising for such a renowned bar. Regardless, I was happy with my selection and even ordered a second one to enjoy with my few courses. Speaking of my meal progression, I started with an order of the Roasted Carrots. The mini carrots included their tops and were plated into a small stack. The perfectly cooked orange points were served over a green pea purée and topped with almonds, crispy parmesan, and fresh mint. I am not typically a fan of peas, but, wow, if I could have bottled that chunky sauce, I would have. It was like a bright, earthy, non-oily chimichurri. My entree was similarly phenomenal. Three scallops were seared to a golden brown and served over buttery mashed potatoes. The other side of the plate included a mussel bisque. A funky farmer's cheese called Alfred le Fermier and crispy breadcrumbs were sprinkled over the dish. I thought that two of the scallops could have been cooked a touch more, but the creamy, rich potatoes and sauces were just sheer decadence, offering flavors of both the earth and the sea. While I was getting full at that point, I simply had to order the Blondie for dessert, as it included all sorts of Fall flavors that I adored. When it arrived, it was not quite what I had expected. Instead of being a square piece of chocolate chip brownie, it was actually broken chunks of a moist, plain cake plated with swirls of decadent chocolate and coffee ganache, a fresh heirloom pumpkin jam, and a dusting of autumn spices. I ordered a generic espresso martini to pair with it, and, boy, was it delicious! It was well-balanced, smooth, not too sweet, and topped with a decent portion of foam. When I was ready to leave, Francis was even nice enough to call me a cab and make sure it actually arrived. His generosity was just another aspect that highlighted how extraordinary my JJacques experience truly was. While I adored the drinks that I ordered, I would say that the place should be even more known for their stellar cuisine.

From the atmosphere to the food and service, this was a truly memorable dining experience. Definitely a hidden gem worth discovering!

It's small, and quaint, and comfortable, and has a staff so well adept to what the wants of its patrons, I just feel in love with Buvette Scott's. Their menu was so eclectic it was hard to choose your dinner; because you want to try everything. With the help of our (excellent) server, she orchestrated a pretty terrific dinner: * Their CLAMS, TOMATILLO, SALSA VERDE were as fresh as the ocean and we (me and my wife) could have eaten 24 each. * BOMBOLONE, CHICKEN LIVER PARFAIT, GINGER, PEAR * EGGPLANT, CORN, RADICCHIO, LOBSTER XO * BEEF TARTARE, ANCHOVIES, BROCOLI, EGG YOLK * MIRAMICHI STRIPED BASS, PLUM, JIMMY NARDELLO * DUCK COTECHINO, SPIGARELLO, PARSNIP * WHITE LASAGNA, MATSUTAKE * And two other dishes I cannot spell or translate or even slightly recognize what it was, but it was delicious. We cannot complain about that. Our server was friendly and very charming. The meal was beautifully paced. The restaurant itself is very noisy. The food itself was disappointing. On the recommendation of our server we started with the carrot doughnut. The doughnut itself was lost under a mountain of ricotta. I would not have known that it was carrot, except that she had told us. We ordered two other starters : I ordered the foie gras pate and my boyfriend ordered the fried oysters. The pate was served on a small layer of sunflower butter, which was unnecessary. The pate itself was surprisingly flavorless. Homemade bread and blueberry jam served alongside was quite good. The fried oysters were completely drowned in buffalo sauce, another green sauce and "blue cheese foam". I would not have even known they were oysters. They were served underneath some cucumbers and peppers and lettuce. For our main course, we shared the blood pudding, which, despite the crazy number of ingredients actually was delicious. It was the best thing we ate. It was served with homemade bacon, a roasted artichoke heart, and some mussels croquettes. Seriously a lot going on. For dessert we ordered the spiced orchard dacquoise. Another complex, and I thought overly complicated dish, that my boyfriend felt worked well. It was presented nicely, and I remembered to get a picture of it. All in all, it seemed like there's just way too much going on in each dish and no particular flavor stands out. Two of the dishes, the fried oysters and the carrot doughnut were just sloppy and smothered. The boudin and the dessert were both beautifully plated, and the flavors worked better as well. The foie gras appetizer was unfortunately bland, and the main ingredient did not shine. Maybe it was an off night? Maybe we didn't order the best things? Evidently, they're doing something right because they've been going for 50 years, but we just didn't see that.

With that being…read moresaid, I was traveling solo for the evening and decided to treat myself to an elaborate feast at Le Clan, an one Michelin-starred restaurant. Since I was on my own, I preferred not to sit at a table, so I was happy that I was able to reserve a single seat at the bar. The quaint restaurant was located on a side street off of one of the main drags in the upper town of Old Quebec. I walked in and was surprised to be face-to-face with the kitchen, which was on full display just beyond the host stand. I was escorted upstairs to the main dining room, where the friendly host checked me in and walked me through the modern, yet rustic dining room to the swanky bar area. The bar had around six seats, and there were two high-top tables in the space as well. The lighting was dim and came from round lamps, which resembled disco balls, hanging from the ceiling. There was also a small television showing the Chef's journeys across Canada to find the most natural ingredients possible. Once seated, I was greeted by the bartender, Jonathan, who was a joy to chat with throughout my meal. He explained that I had two options - either a 4-course meal or a 6-course, each available with a wine pairing. I decided that I wanted the complete experience, so I went with the longer tasting, which was still very reasonable at Can$ 119. Though I did not partake in the wine pairing, I certainly wanted a drink. I wound up getting a glass of the 2024 Chateau de Roquefort Petit Salé de Villeneuve from Provence. The crisp white wine had the aroma of freshly sliced red delicious apples. It had a ripe acidity and was medium-bodied, despite its quick finish. I was absolutely in love with the dry blend of Clairette and Vermentino grapes, so I even got a second glass. While the menu was technically in English, many of the ingredients were still in French, but I left my fate to the hands of the skilled kitchen, which was very freeing! Before the tasting courses even began, they delivered a few sample teasers to drive excitement. First came a single lentil chip carefully positioned in an upright fashion, sticking out of a bowl of dried lentils. It was served with the perfect amount of the creamiest hummus I had ever had. Next came another tasty bite that I unfortunately do not recall, but do remember liking. It was served with thickly-sliced pieces of crusty bread that a local bakery made solely for them. After the two fantastic introductions, the true procession began. First came a sliced of smoked sturgeon so fresh and tender that it melted in my mouth. It was served over a ricotta and salt cod puree and was topped with onions. Next was the red deer tartare mixed with Savora (a yellow condiment like mustard) and celery root. It was hiding beneath a sheet of sourdough crisps that were decorated with roasted chanterelles. I have always been a fan of venison, and this dish was delicious; it managed to be both hearty and light at the same time. These first two courses were my favorites of the night. The following two plates were my least favorite, though they were still excellent. In fact, these were the two that would be omitted if one were to get the 4-course tasting, so perhaps others had felt similar. There was the Atlantic halibut in a bubbling foam of what was supposed to be cuttlefish ink, but was white in color. The small chunk of fish was topped with spelt and garlic scape. It was a nice dish, but not as flavorful or memorable when compared with the others. Then, there was the rabbit served with stewed beetroot and damson plums, all in a beer syrup. I found this dish better than the halibut, but rabbit is just not really a favorite of mine. It was a creative concept for sure, but not a flavor I adored. The meal then seemed to veer back on track, starting with a perfectly prepared hunk of Angus Beef, served with a tiered stack of potato and sausage, topped with a dollop of Japanese mustard. There was also a green, earthy puree on the plate, and a lightly creamy sauce was poured over the steak tableside. Next, the kitchen surprised me yet again with a popcorn pastry covered with white chocolate and topped with actual popcorn. It was buttery and sweet, and I really liked it. Then there was another small chocolate cake with a mousse topping that came as a side dish to the final dessert course. The fresh strawberries from local Île d'Orléans were topped with a rhubarb ice cream, a meringue sprinkled with sumac, and a strawberry and geranium sauce. The tasting might have been long in terms of courses, but everything was nicely paced. I made sure to get a copy of the menu to take home, which the host noticed on my way out and let me know that he appreciated it. When I arrived at the bottom of the stairs, the busy servers exiting the kitchen made sure to send me off with their best wishes. Le Clan was really a class act!
