I had originally thought of going to L'Affaire Est Ketchup, but many recommendations to got to the closely related Patente and Machin instead. So I made reservations for Patente and Machin. We arrived at open, and were quickly seated. It was a Monday night, so the place never got more than half full. It's a very rustic place, with random/eccentric wall decor. The daily menu was written on the blackboards - five small plates (Machins) and 5 larger plates (Patentes). We tried these: - Ris: Very good. It was a fried sweetbread on pasta. Not something I eat often, but was delicious. - Chou Fleur (Cauliflower): Good. It was prepared three ways - roasted, marinated and puree. Because I roast my own cauliflower, the dish wasn't a standout for me. - Steak: OK/Good. The steak itself wasn't remarkable. But the fries were really good. The peppercorn sauce was so intense, I didn't use much of it. - Poulet de Courinouaille (Cornish Hen): Very good. Easily the best dish of the night. Surprisingly tender. - Morue (Cod): OK. Very fresh. But had a lot of ingredients that made is a bit confusing and messy. Service was what stands out. As far as I could tell, there were only 3 people working. Two front staff taking orders and making drinks, and one chef. You could watch the chef prepare, cook and plate every dish that night. It made it a very personal and intimate experience, almost like being served by 3 good friends. But it also meant that everything went at very slow pace. This review was not an easy one. From one perspective, I really appreciated the hard work and dedication of the entire staff. They make it a very personal and special experience. However, on the food alone, I thought it was generally OK or good, but nothing outstanding. So I would rate this as a 3.5 out of 5.

You have an option between a blind, six-course tasting menu or à la carte. Honestly, there are enough things that I don't like that I was worried about a blind tasting. This was no problem. The server happily brought us the menu, so we could say if there was something we simply would not want to eat. It all looked good and we put ourselves in the kitchen's capable hands. Each dish was interesting, beautiful, and delicious. My only quibble was that the support server who presented two of our dishes twice said that she did not know how to explain an element of the dish in English. When dining at a one-star Michelin restaurant, and when the menu is a blind tasting, you want to know what you're eating. I mentioned this to the manager at the end of the evening and he said that her English is quite good, but she is shy. He said that he would keep an eye on the situation and make sure that she was thoroughly explaining the dishes to both their French- and English-speaking guests. The ambience is a very clean, white, natural setting. The service was pleasant. The food was delicious. Strong recommend when you are in Quebec City.

Slight bit of drive outside Old Quebec, but it wasn't too bad. My family of 3 made an 8pm reservation over the holidays, which was a good idea as it was quite busy. The menu is tapas style, so shared dishes. We started with a dozen oysters, and they were excellent. In fact so excellent that we ordered another half dozen. Then came the shared dishes: Mussels - Good Grilled mini octopus - Good, although small. Rutabaga and cured duck breast - There was barely any duck breast in it, and it was the thinnest slice I've ever seen. Grilled hangar steak - A bit chewy despite it being medium rare. Chargrilled shrimps - Great, probably the best dish out of these I had. Service was excellent overall. This is probably a place I'd recommend if you aren't very hungry, as the portions were small for shared dishes.

DELICIOUS OYSTERS AND AMAZING COCKTAILS!…read more This is probably our favorite restaurant at Quebec City during our Quebec trip. Great food, warm atmosphere, and amazing services! The highlight is definitely the oysters - so fresh and delicious, and the price is very reasonable (2 dozens for a bit under $60). Being a person without much knowledge in wine pairing, I played safe and ordered a bottle of Chablis, which worked out quite nicely. We also ordered a few small plates to share, and the sautéed mushroom was the pleasant surprise! The flavor is so rich and creamy, and we love it so much. I'm glad we saved some space for desserts. The dessert platter was so amazing and what a great way to wrap up our dinner on a high note! Their cocktails are also very well made. Our server took the time to understand our preferences and prepared the cocktails to our liking. I'll definitely love to visit this place again!

Review for Lueur Bar Counter by Laurie Rafael…read more What happens when you mix in a Michelin starred chef with a funk bar? Well, probably something that has a glow of lights and entertainment to fill up the place every night. Conveniently, "Lueur" translates from French as "Glow" and this is the kind of spot that would probably be called "hip" if that word was actually still hip. Forget about it, let's just say what it is, it is super hip. The small bar counter is served by a team of three who do a big part of the cooking and guest interaction. The vibe is chill, fun and unpretentious. Dress code is basically "whatever". Lueur is clearly the fun cousin of Laurie Rafael next door, always poking at its older relative for being way too pretentious. Let's talk about the food. Every dish is absolutely remarkable. Dishes decorating the ever changing menu include masterpieces like a Beef tartare tartlet with bone marrow parsley butter, Saint Jacques scallops under a generous layer of truffle bechamel and Pear Chocolate Entermet. Everything is exactly as good as it sounds. The fascinating thing about Lueur is not just the concept, but the team of three who manages to pull off two back to back seatings, each of which lasts roughly three hours. They are masters of the craft, working really hard and have an unusual balance of chef skills along with customer service ability. Thus, Lueur is a real gem for a casual, yet delicious tasting menu establishment.

It is very telling that of all the Michelin restaurants across Canada, so many of them are concentrated in the Quebec City area. These people live for food! Their passion for local, quality ingredients are always showcased in ways that highlight the joy that eating brings to our lives. Taniere serves only chef's tasting menus, so do come very hungry! Like all restaurants of this caliber, the staff is a well-oiled machine. You will not experience better service than what you experience here. Every need is anticipated and everything is impeccably timed and choreographed. There is no hovering, but the team assigned to you is always nearby if you think you need them outside their "scheduled visits." [Which you won't.] You will start in one room with ancient stone tunnel ceilings. Here you will have some drinks to start and an amuse bouche. The staff will tell you about the history of the building, which is super interesting, and how they honor that history as well as use it for inspiration in their dishes. A short time later, you will be ushered to a second room, more consistent with what one might imagine when one imagines a Michelin dining room to look like. The space is beautifully enhanced with impactful art and stunning interior lighting. In here you will eat most of the courses of your meal. We got the wine pairing (which I insist you do as well) and this room is where their sommelier gets to shine. The pairings were so special and unique and like a good wine pairing should, truly enhanced each dish. We were looking up bottle after bottle to see if we could buy some of the wines back home. Sad news: many of these wines are very niche and special! Another reason to spring for the pairing when dining here. Last, you will be ushered into a final room evocative of a winter wonderland. Your final courses are served here. We were stupid full (and maybe a little tipsy) so we were happy to "people watch" and wind down in this calming room. This is an expensive meal, I won't lie to you. Add on the wine pairing, and....yeah, this is a special occasion meal for sure. Even considering the cost, I do not hesitate to say this should be at the top of your Quebec City dining priority list. You won't just eat "well," you will taste the history and culture of Quebec and its incredible bounty. You owe it to yourself to eat here!
