Chef Raphaël Vézina and his Chefs. Merci, Chefs!
    Philip C.

My wife and I had terrific dinner at Laurie Raphaël. As a gastronomic restaurant, Laurie Raphaël does not disappoint. Every part of the dining experience is very well thought out and executed. After we arrived, the host led us through the restaurant to our table. Surprisingly, the first part of the restaurant that we entered was the kitchen, where Chef Raphaël Vézina and his Chefs all stopped whatever they were doing and greeted us with a hearty, "Bonsoir!" The entire space is beautiful and modern. After we were seated and enjoying a cocktail, the complete tasting menu was explained to us. My wife and I wanted to enjoy a lighter dinner on the final night of our first ever trip to Vieux-Québec, so we chose the five-course Menu Personnalisé over the full eight-course Expérience Gastronomique. I also chose to have the wine pairings with my meal. The food was terrific; inventive and delicious. We really enjoyed the pairing of cucumber with caviar, and the textures and flavors of the lobster course were fantastic. I only wish that I had been offered some bread to soak up every last bit of the sauce. There were no missteps with any of the dishes, which were all delicious. I'll post photos. The wines were chosen playfully and from all over the world. I particularly enjoyed the Il Roccolo di Monticelli di Rado, which transported me back to Venice. At first, I worried that the service would be less convivial than I prefer. The staff appeared to have clearly defined roles; some set the table, others delivered the food and others cleared the table. However, there was one gentleman who came by to introduce each course, and showed great humor when I asked him to do it in both English and then French, and, finally, both English and French at the same time. As tourists, the only part of our meal that was lacking was a clear connection between the food and wines to the locality. We travel to eat and experiencing the terroir is important to us. I was hoping for a more clearly Québécois meal. For example, I selected the cheese option for my dessert course. It was a play on carbonara; a flan of egg, Louis d'Or cheese and guanciale. While the cheese is from Québec, I might have thought that I was in Rome, instead of Québec. As I said, however, this feeling is particular to us as tourists. As a gastronomic experience, our meal lacked nothing and would stand out anywhere that we have been in the world.

Tremendous dining experience for our anniversary. Everything was delicious and the service was outstanding. The only disappointments were first course in the bar because the early seating went late., and the wine pairings were good - not great - and largely Canadian.

What do you say about one of the best meals in your life? We came here because I read LaurieRaphael is really good and really expensive, but has a really reasonably priced $30 three course table d'hote at lunch. We were led from the entrance through the kitchen which my kids loved because the three chefs stopped to yell out cheery "bonjour!"s their way. The restaurant has a tree theme going on with a gold twisty tree in the center and tree trunk-colored walls. I was a little nervous going in - I'd never really had French or Quebecois food before, and I was making my pork-averse husband and twin 6-year-olds come with me. The kids were easy to please. The server suggested that the kitchen make them a pasta - would we prefer tomato, cheese sauce, or a mix of the two? We went with the mix and it was really good. They shared it and we even had leftovers. LaurieRaphael only charged us a very reasonable $10. So for a fancy restaurant it was fairly kid friendly (especially compared to another place that told us that the kids would have to order the entire table d'hote to eat there). The table d'hote had two choices for the app and entree and one choice for dessert. There were no vegetarian options in the first two courses so I'm not sure how they handle vegetarian diners. One course did have pork and another had fois gras (a no go for both of us), but we do like seafood and those were the other options. I was very apprehensive about the appetizer, which included flounder in aspic. Flounder jello? No. Thank. You. Despite expecting something that tasted similar to some sort of horrible gefilte fish, I dug in. It was surprisingly good. The best part of the dish (and the whole meal) were the flounder croquettes. There were lots of dots of carrot yuzu sauce. The plate looked beautiful. The second course was also excellent. In our shallow bowls were crusted halibut fillets with different little green things - fresh peas, maybe tiny cucumbers? (I'm wishing I'd kept a menu now) - onto which the server poured a "Nordique" (Nordic?) pesto. The pesto wasn't your garden variety pine nuts, basil, and parmesan. This was foresty somehow. (Again, wishing I'd kept a menu.) The dessert was straight out of Top Chef. It was called a "fruit salad" but composed of lots of little scoops and dots of things. There was more of the yuzu carrot, also purple cream things (again, no menu to refer to now), ginger cookies, and kiwi sorbet. Despite not knowing what I was eating (and to the servers' credit it was explained as it was brought out - I just couldn't remember), it was all really good. Yes, the plates were beautiful, but more than that the taste of the food was exceptional and I loved the innovation. I was so smitten I looked into going to the Montreal branch several days later, but was disappointed to discover that for $40 it was a blind tasting menu (and after much prompting the receptionist confided that it did include pork) so that was a no go. Too bad. Thanks Moon Guide for the tip!

One of the best meals of my life, so of course I had to go twice. The menu was created by chef Daniel Vezina and Raphael Vezina...father and son duo, but Raphael is the one manning the kitchen at Laurie Raphael. I will eat anything from this restaurant. It was so good! I booked my reservation online and they called to confirm my appointment and to check to see if you have an food allergies. The restaurant sits near the St. Lawrence River, so you can walk over there before your reservation. You want to look nice dining here, but I was pretty casual and it was fine. I don't recommend going there in a tank top and shorts. The host/hostess first opens the doors to the kitchen so they can welcome you in. You are whisked to a cocktail lounge area where you can order a drink, get two amuse bouches and are presented with the menu. You can choose between a 3 or 5 theme. Each theme has 2 dishes. I chose the 3 theme the first visit and had major regrets because I really wanted to try all the dishes, but it was a lot of food. The interiors are pretty, but I never felt more uncultured then when I used the utensil rest as a coaster. There's a rest for the butter knife and a rest for the eating utensils, but nothing for the drink. I loved how they replaced all utensils with each course served. Service was impeccable and they explained each dish. The lag time between each dish was perfect. Two or three types of bread were passed out during the meal. I recommend adding the dash of salt. The 1st dish was the halibut ceviche. That was good, but the next dish blew me away. The charcoal grilled scallop with strawberry dish was one of the best things I've ever eaten. For the second visit two days later, it was modified to a scallops and tomato dish which was good but a bit of a disappointment because the strawberry dish was incredible. The third dish was a summer truffle quail ballotine and was followed by a Quebec beef dish. For my second visit, I changed it to two lobster dishes. I prefer the quail and beef dish over the lobster dishes b/c it gives the meal a bit of variety instead of just seafood. For dessert 1, it was a savory Grey Owl cheese panacotta, which was a little rich. Dessert 2 was a large dark chocolate and hazelnut rocher over a cookie and a side of berry sorbet. The meal was finished off with a tiny little dessert. Overall, this one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I loved the creativity, quality and execution of the dishes. Some of the dishes were Asian inspired and felt very international. I was impressed with everything about this restaurant and would come back to Quebec just for a meal here.

When we were last in Quebec city about 14 years ago, we ate at this restaurant and we remembered it very well. It is a complete culinary experience. So we were back again last night. Eating at this restaurant is a commitment. This is really a place for foodies who plan to make the time and financial commitment of having the experience. You should be aware that you'll be there for at least 2 1/2 hours, possibly more. It will cost you at least $200 a head. It is so worth it. Upon arriving, you are greeted by the hostess and you will go through the end of the kitchen to get to the bar. At the bar you will have a drink and a few small tastings from the kitchen will be brought to you. The maître d' will explain the menu to you. I am sure the way they do things it changes from time to time and frequently. For our meal We had to choose between a three and five at stage meal. Each stage has two courses. Because of dietary restrictions with one of the stages, we picked the three stage meal so this meant six courses each. Also, you and your dining partner do not have to pick the same stages. The food is very creative, with excellent presentation, and interesting flavors. It's very hard for me to describe any one of the servings because they are so complex but a few ingredients that made it onto the plates included chanterelle mushrooms, venison, ground cherries, charred buckwheat, and fois gras. We also chose to have the wine pairing with each course that the restaurant picks. There are two levels of this. The lower level is called the sommelier and these are younger winemakers. The higher quality pairing is the classic with established French wineries. The classic is more expensive but worth it because the wines are superb. Since each of us was doing a different level, we were definitely able to tell the difference between the quality of the wines immediately. (Sidenote, one of the wines in the classic that we got was from 1990.) As expected, the service was top notch and this significantly enhances the experience. The decor is a modern ambience and the lights are dimmed but not to an uncomfortable level. I would recommend that you dress nicely, dress jeans and a dress shirt and blazer are fine for men. They aren't going to turn people away who aren't dressed up but I don't know why you would go to this kind of restaurant and not want to feel a little special with your dress. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Quebec city.

Absolutely adorable restaurant outside and inside. You feel like you're in a rabbit burrow. The decor is carefully thought out and charming. The pulled rabbit poutine was great with a mustard sauce instead of the brown gravy you usually get with poutine. The small appetizer poutine was already the perfect size to share along with our smoked duck winter salad and onion soup. Onion soup was made with ale and was covered in cheese. The only thing was that I wished the soup had more broth than cheese. But the onions were tender and cooked down thoroughly. The cheese pull you get is foot long! The broth had a depth of flavor that is not replicated elsewhere. I had the honey pie years ago and remembered that it was sweet, but very good. We didn't have room for dessert, but the maple amaretto creme brulee sounded amazing. All in all, a great meal everytime.

We cannot complain about that. Our server was friendly and very charming. The meal was beautifully paced. The restaurant itself is very noisy. The food itself was disappointing. On the recommendation of our server we started with the carrot doughnut. The doughnut itself was lost under a mountain of ricotta. I would not have known that it was carrot, except that she had told us. We ordered two other starters : I ordered the foie gras pate and my boyfriend ordered the fried oysters. The pate was served on a small layer of sunflower butter, which was unnecessary. The pate itself was surprisingly flavorless. Homemade bread and blueberry jam served alongside was quite good. The fried oysters were completely drowned in buffalo sauce, another green sauce and "blue cheese foam". I would not have even known they were oysters. They were served underneath some cucumbers and peppers and lettuce. For our main course, we shared the blood pudding, which, despite the crazy number of ingredients actually was delicious. It was the best thing we ate. It was served with homemade bacon, a roasted artichoke heart, and some mussels croquettes. Seriously a lot going on. For dessert we ordered the spiced orchard dacquoise. Another complex, and I thought overly complicated dish, that my boyfriend felt worked well. It was presented nicely, and I remembered to get a picture of it. All in all, it seemed like there's just way too much going on in each dish and no particular flavor stands out. Two of the dishes, the fried oysters and the carrot doughnut were just sloppy and smothered. The boudin and the dessert were both beautifully plated, and the flavors worked better as well. The foie gras appetizer was unfortunately bland, and the main ingredient did not shine. Maybe it was an off night? Maybe we didn't order the best things? Evidently, they're doing something right because they've been going for 50 years, but we just didn't see that.

Strongly recommend the charcuterie board and the asparagus risotto. The halibut tail was fresh. The service was great. We had no reservations and got there around 1:40, they accommodated us. But be aware the kitchen closes at 2, you will need to order fast. The restaurant was cute.

They seem pretty decent or small sized with a sizeable staff and a really small menu but service and delivery lacks. Lunch menu has two options - prix fixe for $52 which seems overpriced and lackluster and a tapas (more ne pas) menu with $5 plates. We had vegetarian and pescatarian restrictions and could only order some items - we got their foccacia (which is a tiny bread slice with some tomatoes), vegetable(S) of the day and they said it'll have a bunch of veggies but we got 5 slices of beet, smoked fish vol-au-vent which is ridiculously small and not hot and is listed as a hot plate, a soup of the day that never arrived and upon asking several times the server told us he said soon and could ask the time because he doesn't know?!, an almost thumb sized bite of cake which also took forever to arrive Drinks are fine i guess, the bar staff is a bit better at explaining and timeliness. Overall, not a good experience.

First off the very good parts of this place of which there are many. On a random cold Saturday in…read morelate March we were able to get in with only about a half hour notice. We were underdressed, but the host basically was like "the dress code is only for the waitstaff, you are fine." So the place is definitely welcoming and had a nice vibe. Most of the tables spoke French but there was one other larger group also composed of English speakers. Waitstaff was fully bilingual though the vibe of the place is more Francophone than Quebec tourist. The food is cooked technically very well, though the portions are small, particularly our scallop appetizer which was maybe 2 scallops. The food was very good, but for the price it wasn't amazing, amazing. My wife said her trout for example was a bith mushy. I had the beef and it was very good. I'd happily it that and the scallop dish (maybe I'd order two, lol) again. Cocktails were also very good. Then there was the pre-dinner mackrel rolled in seaweed. Totally fine but an odd choice to give to all the diners. Also, the bread was only so-so (I got a better loaf tonight at Farm Boy) and the pepper butter and fois-gras butter were sort of tasteless. Again this is a solid restaurant and despite being 'fancy' had a very unpretentious vibe about it, which I appreciated. But the price feels a bit high, and the service was quite slow. So for me, it is a 4, but except for a restaurant I ate with friends in Montreal in 2018 (the name of which I am forgetting) and a really excellent spot on Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, the it is probably the best restaurant I've eaten at in Quebec.

Don't forget to save room for their desserts though because they were so thoughtful and artistically crafted!! Walking in, you go through a modern dining room and foyer. Then you enter their glass ceiling green house room where it's an eclectic but classy collection of plants, art, and decor. Their WINE MENU was an insane list & came as a book that was 50+ pages long!! Along with a bottle of wine, lovely complimentary bread & butter & amuse bouche....here's what we ordered: THE FOIE GRAS EXPERIENCE (5/5) - so fun getting to mix and match all 5 forms of foie gras. The most mind blowing one HAS to be the brûléed/caramelized foie gras in the little dish. Smokey, rich and savoury! LOBSTER BISQUE (5/5) - love the large chunk of fresh lobster. I enjoyed that it's not mashed up with everything and I get to enjoy the textures and flavour pairing. Jean-Luc Boulay Signature dish: Squab from Turlo's farm (5/5) - so many things to rave about with the dish. You simply MUST try this, truly a signature dish. EVERYTHING was amazing, and that stuffed mushroom took it to the next level for me. RACK OF LAMB (5/5) - beautiful cut of lamb (not fatty like how most other restaurants are). It's also presented/deconstructed so nicely for ease of eating! The Cannelé (5/5) - DREAMY dessert. It took me by surprise with the caramelized crispy cross-sectioned Cannelé sandwiched with rum mousse and ice cream. The Imperial (4/5) - great praline dessert
