We fell into this amazing restaurant and leaving now so happy! Amazing food - service - and ambiance - all at a decent price. They really care here that you are happy.

Gaspacho

Relatively easy to get a reservation here last minute. We were a group of 8. The gazpacho was fresh and the orange cake was one of the best I've had. The fish was pretty good. The service was very friendly. Overall a good dinner!

This is a great choice for pescatarians. It had several selections on the menu that were either fish or vegetarian, and the one I selected was excellent: mackerel with vegetables. The fish was very tasty -- though the knife they gave me was necessary. The vegetables were perfectly done and were composed of an interesting and flavorful variety in a delicious sauce. For dessert I ordered the strawberries in pink pepper sauce. This was an adventurous choice, but the peppercorns were not very hot so they added a nice crunch and a unique flavor. This dessert was not very sweet, for which I was grateful. I also ordered a mint tisane, which was nice. The honey they provided was of exceptional quality. They also provided a unique sauce for the French bread which seemed to be lightly tomato-based. I liked it a lot. The only downside to me was the acoustics - I could clearly hear everyone's conversation. But then, that can also be amusing. Watch what you say.

Outstanding, Superb food, service and ambience. Loved the place. 5 minutes of walking distance from St Paul, Marriott owned hotel. Great selection of options on the high-end quality French/Mediterranean/Mexican food. We took fancy paella and salmon platter - both were prepared to the perfection and presented beautifully.

Love this!

This place is a gem. I love the outdoor dining unfortunately we had to move inside as the bees decided to dine with us. The service is awesome and they made sure were ok the whole time. The paella is superb (personally, I'd like mine charred at the bottom) seasoned well and the ingredients are plenty. The seasonal soup they had taste really good and wife enjoyed her plate, the veggies were roasted and seasoned just right. Would love to dine here again whenever I tour this place again. Do yourself a favor and dine here. This is not the typical touristy restaurant as many of them in this neighborhood. It's world apart from them. The service - super good, dining experience inside and outside - really nice (we were sitting outside), the cleanliness, especially the restroom - impressive. The food....OMG, the food....amazing. Everything. We had gazpacho and butternut squash soups that were delicious, salmon for main course that was simply to die for and the dessert that was mind blowing. Cant wait to go back there!

Cassoulet

Loved this place for years! Disappointed this time. Braised beef cheeks were outstanding, but the rest of the meal; beef tartare, cassoulet, and Catalan Creme Brûlée were mediocre. Noisy, crowded, and played loud techno music. Our meal was at 8 pm, but we felt like we were being rushed. Not a quiet romantic dinner. Sorry, next time in Montreal, I'll try somewhere else.

We had lunch at this place the food was good just a lot bees flying around keeping us busy waving all the time not comfortable

Amazing French Onion Soup

We had Christmas dinner here and it was a wonderful experience. The service was great and the food was wonderful. The French onion soup was delicious. My husband loved the smoked salmon lasagna. The holiday menu was great. We are so glad we picked here to celebrate. The restaurant was tastefully decorated for the holidays and the ambiance was lovely making conversation easy.

I'm not exactly sure how Barroco landed on my radar; I was taking Montreal recommendations from…read moremultiple outlets, and when I was organizing them it caught my eye as a potential place to grab dinner. Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.

Honestly, I'd plan another trip just to come back to Barroco. The vibe is cozy, charming, and delightfully quaint. The drink menu is funky, original, and flat-out fun. The music is spot-on--enough to make you want to dance in your seat without drowning out conversation. The food looked incredible too, but sadly we'd already eaten and were leaving the next morning. Bottom line: don't skip this gem while you're in Montréal--or you'll be kicking yourself all the way home. Pass on the tourist traps--this is the Montréal memory you actually want.

If you hate garlic, then don't come here. However if you…read moredon't, then come here as often as you can, plus this is the place to go for the best sangria in Montreal, hands down! I love Club Espagnol for a variety of reasons, the sangria is one, the live flamenco shows are another, the gentle family atmosphere, the great terrasse out back and lively crowd all make this place work. Oh yes, then there is the food. Tapas of all sorts: shrimp, calamari, octopus, chorizo sausage, all of it served in garlicky, bread-moppable glory. Spanish ham, cheeses, salads, garlic potatoes and mushrooms, soups, and salads. Mains here include rabbit and many variations of paella. While walking by some tables, the paella plates were positively delicious looking, all the saffron-colored rice, huge shrimp, mussels and chunks of sausage and ham all in full view. Prices are also very reasonable. I love the way families are usually here as well as younger couples, and groups of friends, all sharing the same space. I was here last week with a friend for dinner and some small girls were playing behind us when one of their balloons deflated and flew around before landing right in the middle of our table (not on any food) we both burst out laughing and so did the girls, it's the kind of place where stuff like that happens and it's fine. Try to come here at least once in the summer, it's totally worth it.

Yes the place is a bit on the dingy side, but the food totally makes up for it…read more Been to several tapas restaurants in Montreal and none of them are as authentic as this place, and most places are much more pricy. The paella is really nice. Since maybe 2-3 years ago you have to pay a 25$ member fee to buy booze cause they are a social club. They used to have flamenco shows on wednesday nights...not sure if they still do.

Recently Jeremiah Bullied took over as owner chef and I was excited to go see what this travelling, pickling, kindly master of deliciousness was doing with the old Spanish social club. We went last night to check it out and though the changes being made so far are subtle they are a great indication of new life and exceptional cooking happening in the lovely old room looking out over St Laurent. The classics are all still there, just better: the bread is all homemade and is so freaking good. The goat cheese balls are still changing people's lives, the rapini now comes with kale and preserved lemons and is way better than before, and the chorizo is juicier and tastier than it has been in years. We tried the specials, a pumpkin soup with caramelized onions and toasted seeds and it was unlike anything I've eaten before and I want to eat it every day until May. The other special was Southern-friend quail in lemon gravy on pickled brussels sprouts. Everything about this dish was amazing, except I'm not a quail fan, I think it's stupid, but that's just me. The team here is making tiny changes to the room and the menu and I look forward to going back often to seeing how it all progresses. The fresh coat of white paint feels clean and amazing, and the other little tasteful updates to the decor are smart and good looking. Well worth a revisit, go get it!!
