    Sevilla style scallop and shrimp
    Allegra C.

I have loved this family owned restaurant for 15 years (has been around since '77). They have a classic Spanish cuisine paella and tapas menu with specialties. Tonight we had the Seville styled shrimp and scallops (Marengo de gambas y vieras a la Sevilla). Excellent wine choices and wonderful live flamenco every Friday and Saturday night. This is a Montréal must. So quaint and authentic.

This is an excellent hidden Spanish gem in Montreal! We made a reservation for 7:30 on a Friday night, and when we arrived they had only one large group seated, and one other couple. They had a live flamenco dancer, but we unfortunately could not see her from where we were seated, which was little disappointing. There were four of us, and we decided to order a pitcher of sangria, which seemed to take an awfully long time to arrive considering there were only two other tables there, but it was VERY good none the less. Not strong at all, and very easy to drink. We ended up ordering a second pitcher during dinner. We chose to order the tapas platter, a soup, and the mussels to start. We had asked for the variety of 6 tapas, but received 3, plus a dish of legumes, which was very good still. The broth of the mussels was so delicious, and the bread accompaniment was perfect for soaking it up. The server was extremely nice, and spoke English, French and Spanish. It was getting a little late and he sugegsted if we wanted paella, to place the order before it got too late, and instead of bringing the menu back, he simply asked what our preferences were and suggested each couple share one paella, which was a very, very smart choice!!! We had the seafood paella, which had a split lobster, lobster tail, scallops, clams, shrimp and squid in it. It absolutely delicious!!!! The menu is a bit pricey, and we felt a little rushed to leave at the end, and after getting back to our hotel we realized they mischarged our appetizers and we were way over-charged. So I would definitely check the bill before you cash out! Our bill for 4 people was $270, but the food was amazing, the restaurant was very cute, and we had a great time, so it was well worth it!

Oh wow! This family-owned restaurant is definitely worth every star of this rating. The atmosphere and the decor makes you feel like you're visiting a restaurant in Spain. I almost forget that I'm in Montreal for a while. They have 2 floors and they have flamenco show downstairs every weekend. The food is amazing and their paella is very generous on seafood. It is a little bit pricey than your average restaurant, but such a great spot that you must visit it at least once. It's perfect for groups, a special date or family dinners. So, if you're a fan of Spanish food, I'd definitely recommend to pay a visit to this place.

I might have found that restaurant that fills a bit of the gap I have, being Spanish and missing Spanish food. All my previous tries in Ottawa were disappointing, to say the least. A bit of culinary history: Galicia is a province in the North West of Spain, right above Portugal, and right beside Asturias (where I come from). Galicia is famous within Spain for its white wines (Albariño or Ribeiro) and for its seafood. The coast of Galicia is in the Atlantic Ocean, and the seafood is simply amazing. Now, Casa Galicia tries not only to represent Galicia itself, but the rest of the country as well, that is why the main dish they serve is, of course, paella. Now, knowing the owner is from Galicia, I obviously had some advantage there when it came to ordering our food. I chose Seafood paella. If someone knows how to do a seafood paella, those are the people from Galicia. It serves two people and, listen to this, it includes two appetizers, dessert and coffee, all that for 90$!!! In Spain it's quite common to order the "daily menu" which basically consist of an appetizer, a main dish, dessert, coffee and drink, for about 8-12 euros. Each restaurant would have two or three options for appetizer and another two or three for the main dish. Oh, yeah, and they change daily, so you can go to the same restaurant every day and yet, eat something different in the daily menu. Casa Galicia represented that quite well, including appetizer and dessert in the price. I chose Gazpacho ( cold tomato soup)' and they brought little pieces of fried bread for me to throw into the soup, just like at home! The atmosphere is cozy, since it is not a big restaurant. And of course, dinner was accompanied by a flamenco show! My hands were hurting after clapping so much. I strongly recommend to stop by Casa Galicia if you want to feel like you are in Spain for one night.

This is a charming Spanish restaurent. The foods are ok... my lobster is not fresh, the paella is ok... nothing special. Friendly service.

    Intimate interior, at Casa Galicia.

Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.

I love Club Espagnol for a variety of reasons, the sangria is one, the live flamenco shows are another, the gentle family atmosphere, the great terrasse out back and lively crowd all make this place work. Oh yes, then there is the food. Tapas of all sorts: shrimp, calamari, octopus, chorizo sausage, all of it served in garlicky, bread-moppable glory. Spanish ham, cheeses, salads, garlic potatoes and mushrooms, soups, and salads. Mains here include rabbit and many variations of paella. While walking by some tables, the paella plates were positively delicious looking, all the saffron-colored rice, huge shrimp, mussels and chunks of sausage and ham all in full view. Prices are also very reasonable. I love the way families are usually here as well as younger couples, and groups of friends, all sharing the same space. I was here last week with a friend for dinner and some small girls were playing behind us when one of their balloons deflated and flew around before landing right in the middle of our table (not on any food) we both burst out laughing and so did the girls, it's the kind of place where stuff like that happens and it's fine. Try to come here at least once in the summer, it's totally worth it.

Recently Jeremiah Bullied took over as owner chef and I was excited to go see what this travelling, pickling, kindly master of deliciousness was doing with the old Spanish social club. We went last night to check it out and though the changes being made so far are subtle they are a great indication of new life and exceptional cooking happening in the lovely old room looking out over St Laurent. The classics are all still there, just better: the bread is all homemade and is so freaking good. The goat cheese balls are still changing people's lives, the rapini now comes with kale and preserved lemons and is way better than before, and the chorizo is juicier and tastier than it has been in years. We tried the specials, a pumpkin soup with caramelized onions and toasted seeds and it was unlike anything I've eaten before and I want to eat it every day until May. The other special was Southern-friend quail in lemon gravy on pickled brussels sprouts. Everything about this dish was amazing, except I'm not a quail fan, I think it's stupid, but that's just me. The team here is making tiny changes to the room and the menu and I look forward to going back often to seeing how it all progresses. The fresh coat of white paint feels clean and amazing, and the other little tasteful updates to the decor are smart and good looking. Well worth a revisit, go get it!!
