The first time I came here was with my husband and we had a lovely dinner - the salmon blinis were our fave so I knew when I was here the second time, they were a must! The second time, there were six of us so we ordered quite a bit - we had the salmon blinis with caviar, a few oysters, the cod fritters, the prawn cocktail, the mushroom tortellini, flounder crudo, and whole fried fish - for dessert we did a cheese plate with some delicious local cheese. Everything was delicious - the whole fish is a must - the skin is so crispy and tasty - has a lot of Vietnamese flavours. The cocktails are also fabulous here - I had the Mexican Firing Squad and the Jungle Bird - both delicious and easy to drink! The room itself reminds me of a cool speakeasy bar/resto you'd find in the streets of New York City. It's hidden in an alleyway behind a very unassuming door. It's all part of the magic of the restaurant. If there is one place to go for dinner in QC, go here. We booked a reso in advance and I recommend you do this to secure your spot!

The Vitello Tonnato ($22) and Cod Fritters ($15) were decent but not as good in comparison to our favorites. A friend ordered the pork and shrimp plate and was told it was very dry/overcooked overall. The veggies side was what we talked about after the meal with how good it was. Both were instantly denied with no reasonable alternative suggested by the owner himself, short of waiting an hour for a different table to open. I understand places like to get rid of their undesirable tables but do not foist this onto patrons who have booked weeks to a month in advance! We ended up not eating there at all and went to a vastly superior spot near the FRONTENAC , LE CONTINENTAL- excellent in all aspects! Bottom line - stay away from BISTRO St- MALO- un accommodating and using totally undesirable tables so close to the bar that you may as well be drinking your dinner instead of eating it! The fried oysters were completely drowned in buffalo sauce, another green sauce and "blue cheese foam". I would not have even known they were oysters.
