bottles of alcohol on a bar counter

Visiting from Vermont, had our list of restaurants and bars to hit. Came here at about 4:30 on a Sunday and had just opened. Nice and quiet at that point but I suspect it gets crowded in the evening as this is a somewhat tiny establishment. Friendly bartender with no problem helping us translate the French menu into English. In talking also found out they are owned by La' Affair est Ketchup just down the road. Had a dozen oysters, tried all varieties. Did not disappoint. Definitely a spot to hit up for oysters if you are visiting the city. Will go back someday.

The environment and vibe for this resto is fun, fun, fun! It is really neat to see how a tiny kitchen and really old stove can make such fresh and tasty meals! The oyster choices and prices are very reasonable, we got the jumbo oyster which covered 90% of my face was only $3.50 each. We ordered the sea urchin bisque with scallops, octopus and a bunch of oysters. All the dishes were fresh and light.

fresh delicious oysters

I came across JJacques while looking at the Canada's 100 Best Bars list and spotted it at number…read more11. Apparently, their cocktails were not the only thing that shined, as their food was also supposed to be so great that the place was a late-night chef hangout. I was wandering around Old Quebec while multitasking to find a dinner destination on my phone. I spotted a bar stool available for reservation at JJacques and spontaneously grabbed it and ran to hail a cab to the Saint Roch neighborhood. Thankfully, I had researched ahead of time to learn that the place was not the easiest to find. My cab pulled up in front of the non-descript metal door in an alleyway, and the driver had his doubts that it was actually the restaurant, but I assured him that I just had to ring the doorbell to enter. I exited the vehicle and pressed the Ring, which triggered a warm greeting from a man inside. He led me through two thick sets of curtains and into their stunning bar area. There was a very lengthy dining counter and bar with velvet stools and views of the open prep area, as well as a few large u-shaped booths. Just beyond that I caught a peak of their dining room that looked cool as well. The place was really just a vibe! The atmosphere made you feel like you were cool enough to be invited to a hidden outlet of culinary and beverage delights. I was escorted to my seat at the bar, where the gracious Francis kept me entertained throughout the experience. Naturally, I wanted to get a drink, so I looked through their custom cocktails and their list of around 175 bottles of wine. For some reason, most of the mixed drinks did not pique my curiosity, except the Golden Nail, which included Hornitos Plata Tequila, Mezcal Del Maguey, Mais Violet, piment ancho, and cacao. The boozy concoction offered a hint of sweet chocolate and was served in a rocks glass with one large ice cube. It was a truly delicious cocktail. However, I did notice that many of the drinks used liquors that were not particularly what I would call "top shelf", such as Absolut, which I found surprising for such a renowned bar. Regardless, I was happy with my selection and even ordered a second one to enjoy with my few courses. Speaking of my meal progression, I started with an order of the Roasted Carrots. The mini carrots included their tops and were plated into a small stack. The perfectly cooked orange points were served over a green pea purée and topped with almonds, crispy parmesan, and fresh mint. I am not typically a fan of peas, but, wow, if I could have bottled that chunky sauce, I would have. It was like a bright, earthy, non-oily chimichurri. My entree was similarly phenomenal. Three scallops were seared to a golden brown and served over buttery mashed potatoes. The other side of the plate included a mussel bisque. A funky farmer's cheese called Alfred le Fermier and crispy breadcrumbs were sprinkled over the dish. I thought that two of the scallops could have been cooked a touch more, but the creamy, rich potatoes and sauces were just sheer decadence, offering flavors of both the earth and the sea. While I was getting full at that point, I simply had to order the Blondie for dessert, as it included all sorts of Fall flavors that I adored. When it arrived, it was not quite what I had expected. Instead of being a square piece of chocolate chip brownie, it was actually broken chunks of a moist, plain cake plated with swirls of decadent chocolate and coffee ganache, a fresh heirloom pumpkin jam, and a dusting of autumn spices. I ordered a generic espresso martini to pair with it, and, boy, was it delicious! It was well-balanced, smooth, not too sweet, and topped with a decent portion of foam. When I was ready to leave, Francis was even nice enough to call me a cab and make sure it actually arrived. His generosity was just another aspect that highlighted how extraordinary my JJacques experience truly was. While I adored the drinks that I ordered, I would say that the place should be even more known for their stellar cuisine.

The atmosphere is very quaint, intimate, and wonderfully dark, making the whole experience feel like you've stumbled upon a well-kept secret. The service was exceptional. From the atmosphere to the food and service, this was a truly memorable dining experience. Definitely a hidden gem worth discovering!

We had a reservation for 6, and we got seated in a MASSIVE booth/table that could easily fit 10ppl. A little awkward but not a deal breaker. We ordered a few drinks and a bottle of wine to share among us which came out quickly with the apps. While waiting for the entrees, our wine got warm as there wasn't an ice bucket that was given to us but wouldn't matter much because we finished our drinks by the time the food came out. The entrees were not as good- combination of personal preference and the way it was cooked. For the pasta, I thought it would be noodle shaped but it was shells- kinda a disappointment. A friend ordered the pork and shrimp plate and was told it was very dry/overcooked overall. The veggies side was what we talked about after the meal with how good it was. Not sure if I'll be coming back but they do have a rotating menu so hopefully there are better dishes coming up.

My wife ordered the Eggs Benedict (with ingredients I did not know), and I had the Big (2 egg) breakfast. My wife also ordered a side of breakfast potatoes (my breakfast came with the potatoes). We cannot complain about that. Our server was friendly and very charming. The meal was beautifully paced. The restaurant itself is very noisy. The food itself was disappointing. On the recommendation of our server we started with the carrot doughnut. The doughnut itself was lost under a mountain of ricotta. I would not have known that it was carrot, except that she had told us. We ordered two other starters : I ordered the foie gras pate and my boyfriend ordered the fried oysters. The pate was served on a small layer of sunflower butter, which was unnecessary. The pate itself was surprisingly flavorless. Homemade bread and blueberry jam served alongside was quite good. The fried oysters were completely drowned in buffalo sauce, another green sauce and "blue cheese foam". I would not have even known they were oysters. They were served underneath some cucumbers and peppers and lettuce. For our main course, we shared the blood pudding, which, despite the crazy number of ingredients actually was delicious. It was the best thing we ate. It was served with homemade bacon, a roasted artichoke heart, and some mussels croquettes. Seriously a lot going on. For dessert we ordered the spiced orchard dacquoise. Another complex, and I thought overly complicated dish, that my boyfriend felt worked well. It was presented nicely, and I remembered to get a picture of it. All in all, it seemed like there's just way too much going on in each dish and no particular flavor stands out. Two of the dishes, the fried oysters and the carrot doughnut were just sloppy and smothered. The boudin and the dessert were both beautifully plated, and the flavors worked better as well. The foie gras appetizer was unfortunately bland, and the main ingredient did not shine. Maybe it was an off night? Maybe we didn't order the best things? Evidently, they're doing something right because they've been going for 50 years, but we just didn't see that.

Service people extremely knowledgeable about the food and the wine. Never have i had someone know intimitely about the wines i was deciding on and that really impressed me. All the food was prepared with precision. It was all perfect. We had oysters with a tomato ice of sorts and i really loved this. It was surprising simple and delicious. I will try to make at home. A dirty martini paired perfectly with it. Comte flan with morels rich and strikingly complimentary to the flan. Fried mushrooms in a type of rice flour tempura (maybe?) were good with the sauce. Looked like the sauce would be spicy but it was not. The star, though, was the beef tongue. If you are eating at this restaurant you probably already eat, and love, organ meats. If not, now is your chance because this is the tastiest, most tender piece of meat we've ever eaten. In a demi-glace sauce that was perfect. The pork belly and lobster was so good we ate it even though we were getting pretty full. Just so delicious, and, again, both lobster and pork so perfectly cooked and a perfectly made sauce as well. So we were so full after that we....... OF course we had dessert! All 3 items. A crueller with creme (anglaise?) sauce, a baked Alaska and a creme brulee with a few candied orange zests. I wish there were more zests! Just fab with that brulee. All 3 were fabulous but the creme brulee was my fave. All in all a great experience we won't forget and hopefully will return to at a later date.
