We had the absolute worst Thanksgiving dinner at Leo's this year. I was looking for a decent traditional dinner that I didn't have to cook so I chose a quality restaurant where we have had good food before. The menu sounded good with traditional Thanksgiving dishes. However the meal was not edible. The quality was what I'd expect to be served at a mission or homeless shelter. Four of us pushed our food around our plates for an hour without eating more than a bite or two of everything. Our bill for four people was just under $200.00 before a 20% tip. I have been wanting to go to Leo's for years and finally got to go on my birthday. The food was great as was the service. I would definitely go again. The room is elegant yet not too stiff. People are both dressed up and casual. The servers knew their food and were able to answer questions and give recommendations. The bouillabaisse was probably the best I've ever had. Parking wasn't too bad but you will have to either park on the street or park in one of the lots. That is a bummer but that is what you expect for downtown. Enjoy! read more

Great drink menu, but no prices listed?! The stuffed mushrooms were so fishy I gagged. Greek saganaki was awesome!! Calamari was standard. While I liked the goat cheese salad, the balsamic vinegarette tasted too much like vinegar - bitter. My tuna steak was awesome! Cooked exactly medium rare and very smooth flavor. I was less impressed with the crunchy brown rice and over cooked veg. I almost ordered the stuffed shrimp and boy did I make the right choice. Shrimp tasted like bleach covered in the same crab as the mushrooms - super fishy. My husbands lobster was rubber, and his steak way undercooked (he has a medical condition where he cannot eat rare meat - yet our server never checked on our meal preparation!). He really could not eat much. Off night in the kitchen? Maybe. But this place is too pricey to have off nights. I have called downtown Grand Rapids home for the last 3 years; living right downtown and being single I eat out at least 6 days a week. Leo's is my go to restaurant of choice 3-4 times a week for many reasons. 1. The food is awesome; the seafood is fresh and well prepared. The shrimp are almost like mini lobster tails they are so big and the lobster \ shrimp cakes are to die for (always ordered on my "first dates" as they never fail to impress). They have a couple steak selections on the menu and when I get a craving for beef prepared outside of my condo I go here and not to one of the overpriced "steakhouses" in town; the filet is superb. One of the seldom promoted but incredible lunch selections is their hamburger; it is second to none and I strongly recommend cheese, bacon and grilled mushrooms. Even though this is NOT on the dinner menu the kitchen has prepared it for me at night on numerous occasions (tell them Mike sent you and they will understand). 2. The decor is upscale & relaxing in appearance yet this blue jean and sport shirt guy is always welcome. 3. The prices are definitely not upscale compared to many of the other fine dining places downtown. 4. The wine list is superb and the martinis are very good; if you want a beer pub though you best go elsewhere downtown. They do have a few beers on draft and bottled beer though this is not my forte'. 5. They have catered to my special requests since day one and eating out as much as I do I can be pretty demanding at times; special requests have never been an issue here for me since 2008. 6. The staff from front to back is second to none and that is saying a lot in this city full of incredible restaurants. So.... If you are headed downtown for a great dinner do not hesitate to put Leo's on your list; you might even run into me sitting at the bar rail. Fantastic bouillabaisse!!! Quite the seafood medley--lobster, crab, fish, mussels. And the bread--take the hit on the carbs. SO worth it. I had the Alexander Ferrari cab. If you are downtown and looking for a good burger you should definitely stop into Leo's. The Leo burger is delicious! Topped with a few different cheeses on a bun that is mighty tasty for sure! It comes with waffle fries that to me are a little lacking. I am a fan of the soft fry, not so much the crunchy. The rolls they give you while you wait for your food are - imho - wonderful. I could easily just have a basket of those and be happy. I have only stopped in for lunch a few times and had the burger but I hear they have lots of good food and that the women's restroom is pretty nice. I have only been here for lunch to have the burger - at $8 it can't be beat! I hear their other food is very good but haven't yet tried anything else. I hear the women's restroom is clean enough to eat in but I am not interested in experiencing that - but feel free if you ar einto that sort of thing. read more

Leo's is an upscale seafood restaurant on the north east corner of Louis and Ottawa. It appears a bit unusual at first, perhaps, because the rest of the building is a parking ramp. As another reviewer mentioned, the interior is very open with really tall ceilings. Cavernous you might even say. Unlike the other reviewer though, I wasn't bothered by it. The bar is a separate area and very nice, with a mix of tall tables, regular tables, one booth, and the bar. I've heard that the owner/chef is the former chef at Charley's Crab, but thats only hearsay to me. None the less, I enjoy the place very much. Convenient seafood to down. I haven't ever had anything bad, but I can't really recommend the take out service. I had a Caesar salad with crab cakes and the salad was.. lacking. The crab cakes however were fabulous. This place knows what they are doing. The food is always quality and very delicious. I don't eat seafood and still choose this restaurant when we go out. The Cajun chicken tortellini is by far hands down the best pasta dish around. I get it without mushrooms and it's to die for. So mouth watering with just enough spice. Man is it good. I recently had the chicken spring rolls and they were fabulous. My friend had the filet and it was cooked perfectly. She has celiac disease and they took that very seriously which was great to see. Everything here is quality even down to the paper towels in the rest room. So soft my friend looked them up to order some for herself!! It's the little things that really make a difference. The after dinner chocolate - because you always want a little something sweet. Great job!! We'll be back next weekend! I was pretty disappointed with my experience here. Although my server was really nice, service was slow. There were only 5 other occupied tables in the restaurant! I ordered the escargot, sea bass and chocolate creme brûlée. The escargot came with un-toasted stale bread and was mixed with so much spinach and tomato. I found a few of my snails to be unclean with cooked slime attached to it. My seabass was not bad. It wasn't anything special as I think the mixed vegetables tasted the best in the plate. Lastly, I had chocolate creme brûlée for dessert. If anything, I could at least go home with a belly full of delicious dessert. Wrong again. The server claimed it was freshly whipped in the kitchen but I had one bite and immediately regretted it. The torched sugar was not delicate and light but over-torched and thick. The creme part was really cold which made me think the whole dessert was a day old. My server had offered a new dessert which I declined and also mentioned it was not going to be on my bill due to the long wait for service. Despite this awful experience, I will try Leo's again and hope my second visit will prove this was just a "bad night." read more

I have heard so much about Leo's over the years but never have made the trip. We went with another couple for her birthday dinner. It was realllllllly good. I was so enchanted my how good everything tasted that I totally forgot to take photos. We started with the appetizer that is essentially fried goat cheese on a bed of pesto (SOOOOOOO GOOOOOD). If I ever run a marathon and have an extra 2000 calorie to burn, I will be coming back and eating 20 of these by myself. I ordered the filet and it was cooked to perfection. My husband got the jambalaya and he said it didn't have the bite that he loves about Cajun food, so he would not recommend that dish. Not even sure what my friends got because I was so invested in my steak and potatoes and asparagus that I forgot they were even there. The one cocktail that is pure genius was the bubbly pina colada. I will be attempting to recreate this at home this summer. We also enjoyed the snickers ice cream cake and I couldn't stop raving about it for the next two days. So much so that my husband insisted that it wasn't that good. He is lying. IT IS THAT GOOD. Do yourself a favor and save room for dessert. read more

Had lunch here with a friend from out of town and a newcomer to the city. It was my second lunch visit. It was a perfect spot to introduce GR. My friend wanted local fare -and I was glad I chose Leo's. We all enjoyed our lunch, I had perch and veggies. We had Escargot as a shared appetizer. It was my first time trying it and it was really good. I can't forget to mention the bread/rolls brought out before lunch...no butter needed. Leo's is a high-end seafood restaurant that is fairly new. We went for a romantic dinner, but we felt more like 'fish-out-of-water'(no pun intended). So, there were a couple things that bothered me about the atmosphere. The restaurant was sectioned off into three different areas where you couldn't see the other areas. The ceilings were VERY high and the tables were quite far from one another, normally that is a good thing, but then you feel like you are just out there where everyone can see you and the intimacy is lost. The place was deserted and felt a little eerie. The food was good, but not great. I've had better seafood than this. For an upscale restaurant, I was disappointed with the food! I was hoping for more! Again, there was a bit of a 'fishy' taste from the salmon I had. The desert was great but something about it ended up making me feel sick! Other than that, the service was good and the dinner ended up costing us about $120. Would I go again? I don't think so. Would I recommend? We were a party of 12, dining for our son's college graduation. From start to finish, every single thing was perfect, from the atmosphere, to the service, to the food. The soup special was Turkey Boursin, and it was heavenly!!! I passed it around to everyone, and they all agreed! My husband's swordfish was perfectly prepared. My halibut oscar-style was on another level! The service was on-point---never hovering, but always there if you needed something. I was unimpressed with Leo's. Everything that I ordered was mediocre and not worth the price. I started with the lobster and shrimp cake. It was decent, but the texture was unexpected. The sauce was tangy and good. I got the Seafood Newburg as and entree and it was ridiculously bland. The cream sauce was blah and the seafood was just OK. The carrot cake cheesecake for dessert was also bland. The carrot cake portion was dry and the cheesecake wasn't creamy. That is a good idea to mix the two, but the execution was poor. Me and my husband go here all of the time. Tonight while having a glass of wine we watch 3 people order steamed seafood in a bucket. We asked the bartender if it's a new menu item. We replied "waiting for the other host so we can be seated" because she was taking other customers to a table. She said "ok? Then Can I help you?" The whole time we where being rushed and we felt really uncomfortable. The food was alright but not worth it. I do not recommend because of the poor service. For the money you pay here, the service should be superior. I had the worst and weirdest service that I think I've ever experienced, especially at an upscale restaurant. The food was good, but not great. The atmosphere was a little "old fogeyish." Our waiter didn't greet us for almost ten minutes and when he did show up to pour the water, he didn't tell us who he was... We were left to wonder if he was the bus boy or the waiter... When I tried to engage him to ask about some of the dishes, he told me what his favorite dish was and then just stood there. I realized part of the way through my meal that I was having an allergic reaction to my dish, so I quit eating. When he came back later, he asked me, "Should I remove this?" Normally, if you see that someone has barely touched their meal, a waiter will ask if there was something wrong... He didn't. He obviously wasn't interested in whether I liked it or not. Won't go back. There are too many other really good choice restaurants in Grand Rapids to waste my time or money here. I should say that the food was average. The appetizer (a baked brie) was OK. My wife and I had dinner here on Feb. 22, 2019. Our server, Amber, was pleasant, but did not bring our appetizer; she said she forgot. My wife's dinner was fine. I would recommend their fresh catch specials. I ordered the skate wings in a lemon-caper butter sauce and the sauce was so delicious that I tried to put it on everything. Their house chowder with pancetta is really rich and tasty as well. And the bread rolls they serve is one of the best that I've ever had in a restaurant. If you have room for dessert, try the white chocolate creme brûlée. YUM. I've tried their linguine with clams as well, and I wouldn't recommend it. The pale, elegant decor and dramatically lofty ceilings were a pleasant surprise for a spontaneous lunch date on a Monday I happened to have some free time downtown. I ordered the lobster and shrimp cake, which was well seasoned with a nicely balanced remoulade. Nothing over the top, but tasty nonetheless. My date had the flash fried calamari, which I believe to have been fresh (not frozen), served with a citrus aioli. I only had one bite, but it was good and not at all greasy. Stopped in for dinner on the recommendation of the concierge at my hotel. Room is quite large and there is a lot of room between the tables. Unfortunately we were seated by a large group that was fairly loud but the left shortly. Waiter was pleasant and efficient. Recommended a couple of local beers to try. Did not push wine. We came here on our only night in town, and we were not disappointed! My hubby's lamb was a very generous portion and seasoned well. I love local fish when back in MI, and decided on custom ordering the walleye with a simple sauté. It was perfect! Thank you to the kitchen! It's good. It's the place I was recommended a few times when looking for seafood. I had the bouillabaisse, it was flavorful, the bartender offered to crack my lobster and such (she brought gloves), haven't seen that in forever! My lobster, like most lobster I order in restaurants was overcooked, but everything else was good. My 2 bartenders (no clue which was serving me, they kinda worked together), managed to both ignore me at times, and then both serve me simultaneously. Neither was in training so it was odd. I was in town for work so split my wine bill from my food bill, they forgot to charge me for my food until I pointed it out. I'll probably try something different next time. The only reason I'm not giving Leo's 5 stars was the host staff. We walked in and literally had 4 people stare at us and not one welcomed us. It was awkward so I'm like hi! And the girl goes, "reservation?" which we did have. Please note - no one else was in the lobby area. The Food: Absolutely delicious! My hubby had the Chargrilled Sea Scallops and I had the Filet Mignon. The sides (risotto for the sea scallops and AuGratin potatoes for the filet) were amazing! 5 stars on the food (& server was also great!) The Drinks: Red Sangria for me & a Manhattan for the hubby -- both great & not watered down. We'd definitely come here again - I just hope their host staff can be a little friendlier next time. read more

My boyfriend surprised me and took me to this restaurant. He did a great job at picking the right place because I LOVE seafood. Our experience was perfect. From the service to the food. Everything was great. I really love the fact that this restaurant is attached to a parking garage. We went on a cold night and it worked out perfect for us. There is a door from the parking garage to get inside the restaurant. Leo's has a more classier ambience. Love it and will definitely return! read more
