If you like delicious sushi in a dark, chic, trendy setting, then Leona's is for you. I had dinner here recently with a large group, and the server was incredibly attentive, answering any questions that we had. Their cocktails are all well made, and so yummy. Literally everything we ordered to share was so delicious! Croquettes, crispy rice with spicy tuna, edamame, shishito peppers, oxtail bao, roasted beet salad, soft shell crab salad, beef skewers, Leona's special roll. I definitely recommend going with a group, so that you can taste many different dishes. So so good! read more

First time at Leona's, and I have mixed feelings. The venue is lovely, with multiple rooms of varying styles. The room with the cocktail bar (and windows open to a patio) has the most energy, with full tables and a nice, festive buzz. The middle section has a quieter, more romantic feel, though it seemed equally busy. We, however, had asked to sit at the sushi bar, and in the case of Leona's it's the loneliest space in the place. We were the only customers, with one or two other occupied tables nearby. This was clearly a bad decision on our part, but the hostess might have suggested we'd have a better time of it elsewhere. We'd have likely had better service, too. Our server was friendly enough, but went MIA a good deal of the time (we were her only customers in this room). The sushi chef was nice, but slammed with orders, though he did make ours without much wait. There is a full bar, so many cocktail options on top of wine and beer, but the sake list is a bit silly: mostly high-priced 720ml bottles, and very few small options. The food was also a tad hit or miss. Toro sushi was top notch and very flavorful; Albacore Sashimi with pico de gallo and crispy onions was also fresh as could be, and very satisfying. Truffle Butter Edamame had a nice, earthy flavor, and Ankimo sushi tasted especially fresh, with a rich and distinctive flavor. Less inspired was the Corn Tempura, which was very bland; the accompanying spicy mayo had very little spice, and seemed wrong regardless. We requested traditional tempura sauce, and this version likewise disappointed, being bland and a bit too thin, much more like a broth. Our final selection, the Salmon Arale Roll (tempura white fish and asparagus inside with salmon and avocado on top plus crispy rice and chili oil), was, again, dull and bland despite the number of ingredients. We didn't even finish it. So, was I blown away? No. Would I return? Yes. But I'll sit in the bar room, and I'll stick to sushi or sashimi. I'm optimistic that my next visit will hit better notes. read more

Leona's is a beautiful restaurant! We started off with drinks! I got the sake cocktail with salt rim, so good! We got the spicy edamame, which was delicious! Udon cacio e pepe was super delicious. I loved the twist of the udon noodles on a traditional pasta dish! Lastly I got the cilantro jalapeño yellow tail roll. Omg 10/10. Best dish hands down. So fresh and flavorful! For dessert, the Kabocha cheesecake. Another 10/10! Wasn't too sweet, very good squash flavor notes, not too cream cheesy! Very delicious 10/10 It was very busy! We came to Leona's while scouting a good option for a larger group dinner, and it ended up exceeding expectations. We made a reservation for six and were seated immediately upon arrival. Parking in the area is extremely limited, so valet is basically a must. It was around $10, which honestly made things much easier, especially since we were running a bit late. We were seated in the covered patio, which was beautifully set up and comfortable. The indoor lounge also looked great, while the sushi bar felt more suited for casual dining rather than a large party. Overall, the ambiance was polished and impressive. The cocktails were excellent across the board. Presentation was thoughtful, and the flavors were well balanced. Easily one of the highlights of the night. For food, the appetizers were fantastic, especially the shishito peppers, which stood out the most and were a table favorite. From there, everything we ordered was consistently strong. The scallops, yellowtail sashimi, ribeye steak, and branzino were all cooked perfectly. The steak came out a proper medium rare, and the fish dishes were delicate and well seasoned. The only dish that didn't quite land for me was the cucumber salad. It felt under seasoned, and while the lemon helped slightly, it wasn't memorable. The sushi rolls were good, but if I were coming back for a date night or a smaller group dinner, I would probably skip them in favor of the hot dishes and sashimi. Desserts were also a highlight. The flan was smooth and well executed, and the candied orange peel on top was a thoughtful and delicious touch. A special shout out to Chris, our waiter. He gave genuinely helpful recommendations, was honest about what stood out on the menu, and shared his personal favorites, which made ordering for a larger group much easier. Very limited metered street parking so your option is pretty much their Valet that charges a reasonable $10 (as of Nov 2025) plus tip. Venue 4.5: Modern and contemporary enclosed patio, indoor tables, sushi bar and cocktail bar seating. They have 2 cocktail bars, one indoor and one one the patio. Lively and happening place with a nice, trendy vibe. We were seated in the enclosed patio which was great. They take reservations on Open Table which I would recommend as it can get pretty busy. Service 4: Our server Chris was friendly, polite and attentive. The bussers and the cocktail server were also super nice and friendly. Drinks 4.5: Full Bar. Creative specialty cocktails, mostly based on Japanese premium spirits, beer, wine and sake. The Toki Remedy (Toki Japanese whiskey, ginger, lemon, honey, bitters) and Leona's Old Fashioned (Toki Japanese whiskey, Kuromitsu (Japanese syrup made from black sugar), orange and bitters) were very good and highly recommended. Food 4.5: Sophisticated and creative Japanese-inspired modern fare with Peruvian accents; appetizers, soups, salads, oysters, hand and cut rolls, specialty rolls,. sushi, sashimi and Chef's specials (large plates of beef, chicken and seafood that can also be shared if desired). To start, we ordered the Spicy Seafood Miso Soup, the Spicy Tuna Rice Cake, the Popcorn Shrimp and the Lamb Chops. The cocktails are fantastic (honestly, I'd come here just for the drinks and the energy of the space). Perfect for a date night or a fun evening out with friends. The food was overall very good with some standout dishes. The octopus salad was absolutely delicious, and the nigiri was fire - fresh, high-quality fish and not rice-heavy. The rolls were also excellent, again highlighting the freshness of the fish. The spicy tuna crispy rice was good, though not the best I've had. The jicama tacos were interesting but a little bland for me, not something I'd order again. It is on the pricier side, my husband and I spent around $400 for late-night drinks and nibbles, and another time my girlfriend and I spent about $300 for drinks and five dishes. I think a lot of that comes with the location and the overall experience. Even though not every dish blew me away, the atmosphere, cocktails, and quality of the fish make this spot worth revisiting. Came in expecting a great experience given the reputation, but unfortunately it fell short. While the atmosphere had a nice energy, the service took an uncomfortable turn when our waitress (long black braided hair) made comments that felt inappropriate and politically charged, which really detracted from the evening. The food itself was average at best and didn't make up for the experience. What was most disappointing was the lack of follow-up. I made three separate attempts to speak with a manager by phone, and not once did anyone return my call. A good vibe can only go so far. overall, it was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Random, but the tables are also big so you can easily share plates! Food: Miso Soup - such great flavor, big tofu chunks - comfort in a cup, highly recommend! Oxtail Bao - insanely tender oxtail, super juicy, highly recommend! Croquettes - light and tasty crab flavor, recommend. A5 Wagyu Nigiri - can't put my finger on it but it was just okay, not sure I'd order again. Veggie Roll - pickled veggies, refreshing flavor, you can sub soy paper too, highly recommend! This small sushi spot packs quite a pleasant punch. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly at a nice 4 top table. The decor in this restaurant is absolutely stunning. We ordered miso soup, cucumber salad, spicy tuna and crispy rice, and oxtail baos to start. The miso soup was hot and flavorful. The cucumber salad was tangy and marinated well. The spicy tuna and crispy rice was really good as well, but for the price wouldve been better if there was 4 pieces. (Instead of 2). The oxtail baos were delicious and tender. We ordered a bunch of rolls, the one with yellowtail was absolutely delightful and id 100% order this again. I got the taco trio which comes with 3 out of this world sashimi tacos. The flavors were amazing on each taco and with the jicama shell, they were perfectly light and refreshing. I got the lychee martini and which was decent. Staff was very friendly and made amazing suggestions. However, when notifying them about the occasion (a birthday). We were told they would provide a complimentary dessert but instead we were charged for it. So I felt that was tacky. Considering how much we had spent overall. Interesting menu items, they have sushi but other entrees like pasta. Prices are a bit high depending on what you get. Corn Tempura: I thought this was just okay, I didn't love it but my friend did. Crispy Rice: I really liked this! It has a kick to it, it was crunchy, creamy, and delish. Albacore Ceviche Roll: I got this based on the waitress's recommendation. It was presented beautifully and tasted really fresh. It's essentially like a salsa on top of a sushi roll. Don't expect actual fish ceviche on top of the roll.... though that would be cool. It's diced veggies like tomatoes and cucumbers. It was good but I'd probably try another roll next time. Overall, pretty decent meal and service was friendly and great. read more

Came here on a Sunday night and it was not busy at all. Valet out in the front for $10. The vibe here is unlike any Japanese/sushi restaurant - it feels hip and cool. Music was a tad loud but bearable. The lychee martini was quite enjoyable! We ordered: - white salmon (trout) nigiri: 3/5 - halibut nigiri: 5/5 - scallop nigiri: 4.5/5 - toro sashimi: 4/5 (this was tasty but a tad expensive - $60 for maybe 5 pieces?) - yellowtail roll: 4/5 yummy, could have used a little less ponzu - lamb skewer: 4/5 nicely seasoned, liked the sauce they used - crab croquette: 3/5 this tasted good, but I wish there was more texture to the crab? It had me wondering if there was actual crab in there or if it was just some paste because there was no crab texture, just mushy. - oysters: 3/5: I wish we could put our own amount of vinegerette just because there was a little too much. For my starter, I had the blue crab croquettes. They were delicious! Right ratio of crunch to moisture. Then for my entree, I had the Miso Cod, as it was highly recommended online. One of the staff was extremely rude claiming at a private holiday party that I wasn't allowed to use the "private bathroom". I couldn't believe the rudeness. It made my night immediately sour and I left quickly afterwards while I found a bathroom on the other side to use without "getting yelled at". The place was very crowded and wasn't very relaxing since it was hard to get drinks and food. The sushi I tried was really good but the other appetizers were just "ok". Overall, I would never go here again unfortunately. I appreciate the effort for the holiday party but whoever yelled at me (as a customer) for wanting to use the restroom should be fired. Leona's has such a beautiful ambiance. It's romantic, the lighting is low and the conversation space it provides is warm. You're basically in a moody garden or in a seductive bar area with a beautiful feature. Dinner is illuminated with candles around the area and gentle notes playing in the background. The service is OK, they're not the type to come around often or ask if everything is great. The menu itself is big enough to give a variety but not enough to overwhelm you. I understand why they consider themselves Japanese but it's more Japanese fusion.. I didn't really get any true Japanese flavors.. I tried all of their rolls and got more of a Peruvian ceviche flavor profile for nearly all of the specialty rolls. Not sure if that's because they drowned the fish in yuzu , onion and cilantro flavors. I didn't think the food was bad but certainly wasn't particularly a good.. The value is NOT there for me. The fish quality was just a small step above AYCE sushi (aside from the off menu fish). The range is $6-$14 PER PIECE (literally 1pc not the typical 2pc that nigiri orders are). This is stated on the menu. The price for still water was CRAZY. Like, sis, yall didn't even pack my cute glass bottles to go... I'd come here to get a cocktail or two and maybe an appetizer but I would not come here because I want sushi.. there are too many competitors in the area to rank this highly. I recently dined here and had an overall enjoyable experience. The vibe here is great and offers three separate dining spaces giving you options on where to sit. My husband and ordered a glass of wine and a cocktail. The cocktail was solid. Very refreshing. We ordered the following food: -shishito peppers -assortment of sushi (halibut, kanpachi, salmon and yellowtail). -miso cod -Leona special The food was great -- fresh, high-quality ingredients that were well-prepared. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that I could find similar quality sushi and menu options at other spots along Ventura Blvd. That said, I'll definitely add this place to my list of sushi spots in the area and will be back to try some of their non-sushi dishes, which looked intriguing.
