Gabe was fantastic, walking us through the drink menu and answering our questions about various dishes. Between us we tried three local beers. The chicken liver parfait, $7 each was devine. Think French pastry choux filled with a light fluffy pâté instead of custard. Mmmm. The 500 gram ribeye for $95 with three sides was more than plenty for one and east to share. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Tender. The crushed potatoes over sour cream, delicious. A nicely dressed salad of fresh greens, light. The broccolini interestingly seasoned. Every detail is accounted for no matter who you are. The staff get their family meal at the end of a well deserved night, in the thick of it it can be pumping yet in that moment they make you feel like you are the most important in the room. The restaurant is part of 2 places, the Red Ochre Grill was located upstairs, and the place was very classy and trendy. The waitress got a bit lost in locating out table and had to recheck again, but managed to seat us on a 6 seat table in the middle. There is no disability friendly access for Red Ochre grill however if you request for one, there is access on the ground floor for the River Cafe. When paying a decent amount for lunch (at least $55 for 2 courses), I left with a sour impression rather than a positive one. After receiving the incorrect bill (which said our food cost $0.00), I was tempted just to walk out, I mean the bill said we don't owe them anything, but in deciding to do the right thing, there was quite a wait to get the attention of the staff in order to have them correct their mistake. You would think that they would check the bill before they hand it to the customer. Around 20 mins spent waiting for the bill and another 10-15 for the correct bill meant there was a lot of waiting to do. The views were nice but it was difficult to appreciate them when you were trying to get the attention of the staff. The food was a bit bland. I had the asparagus with quinoa and while it was nice, it was not amazing by any means. Dessert was good but nowhere near worth the asking price. Presentation was clearly the outstanding element here as opposed to taste. I recommend Serafino in McLaren Vale if you want to dine fancily. The staff there are great. Unfortunately for the Botanic Gardens, a lunch I was looking forward to turned into a lunch I would rather forget.

The only thing that let this place down for us was the wine list, being red wine lovers they didn't have a great deal to choose from and what there was weren't great. Having said that though everything about the night was enjoyable and would go back again for sure!
