During the week of Labor Day my family and I vacationed in Ocean Grove, NJ for five days. Late one…read moreevening while sitting out on our hotel room's porch listening to the ocean waves, I very suddenly felt a foreign object in my right eye. Expecting that it was probably sand from my hair or a towel draped over the balcony above, I proceeded to try to wash it out with all the usual methods, but to no avail. The object became trapped far under my upper eye lid and would not come out. That evening I could not sleep well, as the pain of whatever the object was continued to wake me up throughout the night. When morning came and the object had still not cleared itself from my eye, I knew I needed to go somewhere for help, as this had happened many years prior. I considered the local urgent care, but felt they might not have the necessary expertise for an eye emergency. As such, I looked up local optometrists, as my own optometrist back home had once before removed some basement dirt from my eye. Del Negro and Senft in Neptune City was only a few minutes drive and opened the earliest in the morning of the local optometrists, so I decided to call them. The lady who answered the phone was very understanding and kind enough to offer to get me in right away. After arriving and filling out the necessary paperwork, I was taken back by a doctor's assistant and seen by Dr. Wiedeman minutes later. Dr. Wiedeman quickly determined the location of the embedded object, apparently a small glass-like piece of sand, and went ahead to remove it from my upper eye lid. This of course is no easy task, especially as I do not wear contacts and have never been comfortable with anything or anyone touching my eyes, and also, as Del Negro and Senft is not my regular optometrist and I had never been there before. After removing the object, Dr. Wiedeman also took time to talk to me about my mild dry-eye syndrome and to suggested methods of coping with it. I am very grateful to Dr. Wiedeman and the staff of Del Negro and Senft for getting me in so quickly and taking the time to help. They definitely saved my vacation (and my family's) from becoming quite unpleasant. My wife and I were even able to salvage the day and proceed down to Cape May for the afternoon, which had been our plan prior to the object becoming lodged in my eye. Were I living on the upper part of the Jersey Shore, I would be very pleased to have Del Negro and Senft as my eye doctors. Thank you!

He has done several laser surgeries and worked with me to find eyedrops that are not based on sulfa, to which I am allergic. He has done successful cataract surgery on both eyes. He is meticulous and thorough and can see problems that other doctors miss. If there is a need for emergency surgery he will make time for it. He tracks the progression of my glaucoma and adjusts what is needed, be it further laser surgery or different drops. I am grateful to him.

I had visited this doctor on referral from my opthomologist due to what he said was diabetic…read moreretinopathy based on the high tech scans. He told me that most likely Dr.Friedberg would laser it or inject medicine to help the burry vision in my right eye. Dr.Friedberg dismissed this diagnosis and said that I had a torn retina. He said I had two options. One was laser that would improve my vision but would not give me full range of vision. The second was surgery at Riverview that would be 95 percent improved. Obviously, I chose surgery. His scheduler set it up for two days later and told me I needed to rent a special chair for the weeks following because the bubble put in eye requires looking down for over a week. Surgery was unusual and he was nasty to the assisting nurses. I also sensed a problem when apparently they did not have enough probes on site. He used what they had and continued. After the surgery I told him that I was prepared with the chair and he said his technique did not require it. $250 to rent this based on his staff's instruction. After the two months healing period I had worse vision than before. He then said I needed injections once a month for four months and that should solve the issue. At that point he also said that he did see the swelling that I originally came to him. Insisted it had nothing to do with retinopathy. After the fourth injection showed no improvement he basically told me that there was nothing else that he could do and I should consider this eye as a "spare tire". What? Follow up with my ophthalmologist was not promising and after I told him what happened, he said we have to wait and see how the eye progresses but the cataract in the same eye may not be able to be fixed with surgery without risk due to the retina surgery which weakens the eye. I feel he botched the surgery and then dismissed me knowing that he screwed up. I would strongly not recommend this guy. As others have stated, his office is old with old equipment.
