Bought many things here over the years. We walked in and was immediately recognized by "thebiglebowski." Still the same and the hardware store is the same with a plethora of bolts, nails, building materials, collapsable buckets, and of course a very nice candy counter! After a few minutes I could hear two other employees in the back talking. Then I looked down a hardware aisle and another employee was leaning against a shelf looking at his cell phone. After another 3 minutes I gave up and left noticing there were no other customers in the store. Told check out person I gave up waiting. Went to True Value in Berkeley and greeted as I walked in and had receipt in hand and out the door in just a few minutes. They will get my hardware business from now on.

The current owners did a great job in bringing this store up to date. It looks great and is always well stocked, clean and organized. I asked for help from the helpful hardware man. I believe I was helped by the store manager, who was asking me questions like he was the customer and I was the employee. Why do you need 6 screws when it came with 12. Do you need 3/4 ? I don't know what is 35mm? Eventually, we both decided what screw that I needed, and I proceeded to make my way to check out. I saw that there was a sponge for 3.99 note in corner that this sponge has been priced 3.99 since 2/22. Not a bad price so I go to buy the sponge and screws. The lady checks me out and sponge rings up 4.59 And I immediately say wait the sponge is like 389 or 399. It's definitely under four dollars. She replies it rang up 4.59 so that's what it is. I said well if you would go look your price is marked differently. She said I can just tell you that this is what it rang up and this is how much it cost. I did buy it because I needed the sponge, but I went back and took a picture and showed the manager the same manager that helped me with the screws who is not far from the cash register and they both left about the fact that I went and showed them that it was 399 and she charged me 4.59. And said oh well Scott needs to fix the prices looks like Scott missed this one oh well. I don't know why they think that they're entitled to 50 extra cents. I just think it's shameful and there's plenty of Ace Hardware's. That have way better attitudes. If you're looking for a helpful hardware person do not go to this Ace Hardware

I was not able to get the broken part out after trying and trying. I went to Ace prepared to have to replace the unit. James in the keys and lock department said to let him try getting it out. No luck on the front end, so he disassembled the tumbler from the back, removed the broken part and was able to make a duplicate key from the part that broke. He also cleaned out the tumbler and reassembled everything back. Came home, put everything back together, and the new key worked! My final cost was for a new key only. Try getting this level of service from a big box store. It's not going to happen. Thanks to James at Len's Ace hardware. Service like this is why I go there. They are 5 stars!

We usually have to wait a while for the right people to be available or to arrive & help. The employee is much more extra valuable if cross trained in my opinion. The price/value of sharpening went up to $6 ish per knife.

When I say "older", I mean that they're not exactly up to speed with things like ringing up a Yelp coupon (there's no sku!) and calling for extra help at the register using the walkie talkie ear piece (instead the gentleman simply yelled "can anyone help a customer over here?!"). I'm not a home owner or wildly invested in a home project so I don't mind it at all. It reminds me of my grampa - a little slower and a bit old fashioned but they know where every single thing is in that store! They are very speedy with making keys! And they have a nice selection of cool keys like a Chicago Blackhawks key or even Disney characters! I like popping by when I need something like potting soil or a wall anchors. I like keeping these guys around:)

I drive over most weekends to just pick up a bag or two of gardening soil or some pavers or bags of grass seed...but, I somehow end up spending $150 on fan gardening materials, seedlings, soil, seeds, and so much paint! I've painted my whole house, including the basement and outdoor area, too! When I'm having a tough day, a visit to the Menards on North Avenue is so comforting. Especially if it's one of their "11% back mail in rebate" days or if I have rebate cash to spend!! Love the staff here, too.
