Villa Park Ace is convenient but convenience comes with a price. Everything here is just a little bit pricier, but I let that go because I feel good spending my money locally rather than at Amazon. The majority of the workers here are older white men. When I say "older", I mean that they're not exactly up to speed with things like ringing up a Yelp coupon (there's no sku!) and calling for extra help at the register using the walkie talkie ear piece (instead the gentleman simply yelled "can anyone help a customer over here?!"). I'm not a home owner or wildly invested in a home project so I don't mind it at all. It reminds me of my grampa - a little slower and a bit old fashioned but they know where every single thing is in that store! They are very speedy with making keys! And they have a nice selection of cool keys like a Chicago Blackhawks key or even Disney characters! I like popping by when I need something like potting soil or a wall anchors. She was gruff and snappy and critical and sarcastic. I called to ask location, the man who answered was SO RUDE. He practically yelled at me when I asked if it was Villa Park or Lombard. I said "so this isn't Schroeders, right?" He replied that Schroeders Ace didn't exist anymore (it does, just under new ownership), again the tone was confusing to me as I was just making sure I was going to the right location. When I arrived at VILLA PARK Ace, I asked for $130 worth of decorative rock, would be back for more but this is what I could transport home. After I loaded 3 bags into car and no one came to help me, I went in and asked a man in the back if I could please have some help (I was polite, btw), thought maybe there was no request as cashier seemed busy and overwhelmed. He snapped back at me "HE IS COMING, he's bringing it up!" I was literally shocked. I said, "oh, I didn't know that." There were bags up front so I assumed someone would just come out, I clearly had no idea someone was loading more from back. His reply to me was, "He answered 3 times, I heard him!" I said, "well, I didn't. I must have been outside." I then told him he was very rude, he was rude on the phone and then in person. I said maybe I should just get a refund, he got on his walkie and said "CANCEL".... so I got my money back and told him that are many Ace stores to choose from. His tag said "manager"... even more shocking. As I left, the poor guy came up from back with a cart full of the bags of stone. The "manager" snapped at the poor guy, "I SAID CANCEL" to which the employee answered, "I didn't hear that." So, I drove over to Ace Lombard where I had a very pleasant experience with extremely polite customer service. 2 trips later and $450, the stone looks great! I had to run here last minute for a quart of paint. Saw reviews before I went and wondered how an Ace could have so many bad reviews??? Well now we know. I walked to the paint counter and asked the kid behind the counter for what I needed. He said, I'm not the paint guy, look around the store for this short lady with a ponytail. I said, you expect me to walk around the store to look for someone? You can't call them? He say, I guess so. The store was closing soon and the same "paint counter" guy is standing at the front door as someone was approaching and says, save your steps we are closing. They are the rudest and most unprofessional people I've ever encountered at an Ace Hardware. I wouldn't ever go back to that store if it was the last hardware store in my area. Their staff needs some serious customer service training and need to check their piss poor attitude. I'm all for small businesses being successful but this place I hope closes, they don't deserve patronage. read more

1st review I have ever left on yelp. Purchased a blower from the store in late may 2023. The cost of the blower was significantly higher than what i could purchase the blower online, however I like to support local merchants and thought they would take care of me if anything went wrong with the blower. Sure enough, 2.5 months later the blower stopped working. I took the blower back to the store and asked for assistance. I was told there was nothing they could do and that I needed to contact the manufacturer. Since I do not want to be without a blower for an extended period while i fight with the manufacturer, I figured they would at least give me a discount on a new blower. Nope - Told nothing they can do. I expected so much more from this store? Honestly I have received more support from online purchases or from purchases from big box stores. i was not expected them to hand me a new blower, i just thought they would find a way to take care of their customer, instead of trying to get me out of the store as quickly as possible. I am not sure how stores like this are going to compete if they do not find ways to take care of their customers. Needles to say i no longer will be shopping at the Villa Park Ace. I spoke with one of the managers at VIlla Park Ace a little while ago. I was calling to let him know about an incident that occurred on Sunday. I walked up to the store to have a key made. As I walked by some equipment on the sidewalk I misjudged where the 2nd machine was sitting. I caught my foot on it, another customer, someone I am familiar with) asked if I was OK. I responded that it got me. I realized later that I may have actually broken my toe. I stopped into the store yesterday to pick something up and mentioned to the gentleman who helped me what had happened. His response was, "that equipment is usually pushed back against the building" not I'm sorry that happened or any other show of concern. I actually put back the item I was going to purchase because I was angry about the lack of concern. I called this morning to talk to a manager about the lack of concern that a customer had been injured. The reaction of the manager was no different! When I relayed what had happened there was dead silence on the other end of the phone. When I called him out on the lack of concern he told me "he was having an issue with tinnitus in his ear and was having trouble hearing me." THEN SWITCH THE PHONE TO THE OTHER EAR! (This was that same manager I spoke with about a rude employee. His excuse for the silence on the other end of the phone was "the employee is standing next to me." Put the call on hold and go to the office to continue the call!!) At that point I was so frustrated I didn't pursue it further with him and told him I'd write a review letting others know there seems to be a lack of concern by the employees and management for the safety of their customers. I just wanted to let management know so they could talk with the employees about how to handle things when a customer is injured at the store. Don't shop here they don't have common curtesy tried to return an unused paint roller but it was ripped at the top (could staple back together and bam) and the lady said I cant return because I can't resell. Yes actually you can resell and Ive never seen a store not accept a return because the bag was opened. Could have just returned it out of courtesy and she was so rude. This Ace has a couple of very helpful employees that I know I can consult if I'm ready to take on a project. I've had mostly good experiences here and have been pleased with their sales. My most recent experience left me with a sour taste however. An older male employee reprimanded my 2 year old for 'running'. She was with me, I had control of her in the store and she wasn't running. She was moving at 2 year old speed which is somewhere beyond a fast walk. Although I can appreciate his concern (albeit unwarranted), I did not appreciate his rude, stern tone. We made our way to the register after that and I asked my middle school aged child to return an item to the shelf that my 2 year old was carrying around and then get her in the car while I paid. The cashier actually stared after my kids as they went outside and then questioned whether they returned the item or stole it. Seriously. You've got my phone number on Ace rewards and my credit card info I've just paid with but my kids are walking out with a random $2 item? Give me a break. She heard me tell them to return the item to the shelf, we were trying to save her the hassle of putting it away. Super offensive. I'm not interested in being scolded or made out to be a thief. I think the employees in that store need to calm the heck down and the overall experience will improve. read more

Guess who's back? Back again. Ace is back. Tell a friend. Yup. The Villa Park Hardware store, which had lost its Ace recognition before it closed last year or early this year is back, along with the Ace lettering placed neatly back in its spot on the sign. Everything is new and bright and shiny! The store is well organized. I've been to Ace's where there are no signs showing you what is in each aisle. This can be a nightmare when there is no sense of organization. Not so here. There is plenty of signage. Everything is in it's place and employees are easy to find when you need something. The checkout is kinda funny. The scan gun makes some weird sound when something is scanned. Like "boing!" Something you'd expect to hear if a product was rung up wrong. That's gotta be annoying. The cashier was really nice though. She must not be jaded yet. Oh and they have fresh popcorn for free! Random, I know, but who cares? I'm always down for some popcorn. I'm glad this Ace is back. It's close to home for our hardware needs. No long trips to Hope Depot! read more

No wonder ace hardware stores are all going out of business, I had two brand new Unopened products with a receipt that I was returning and their policy is 45 days, no exchange no refund after that time. How can they compete with big box stores that offer product returns at least 90 days (Costco has no time limit on returns) with proof of purchase. I want to support small local stores but with that kind of service I won't be bothering to come back, they're always priced higher as well, but it used to feel good to support local. I moved to Villa Park with my family about 1.5 years ago and our house needed a lot of little repairs. We live within walking distance. Despite ACE being more overpriced than other big stores I decided to give my business locally, but I agree with all the negative reviews here. I've honestly yet to run into anyone who is friendly, helpful, or seems like they enjoy their job or at least enjoy having a job. The big stores are not much better but this is a small community business. I know no one wants to work and many feel like they don't have to do anything more than the bare minimum. My job requires a lot of high level customer service so I get perturbed when other people cannot take their jobs serious or at least offer a semblance of common courtesy, which this store completely lacks. I have been here many times and I cannot say that a single visit was pleasant. The only reason I continued to go was convenience. I will not be doing anymore business there no matter how convenient it is. The owner must have no standards for quality customer service. The last time I was there, and that will be the last, it was about 10 minutes before closing which I didn't realize but some middle aged guy walks up to me and rudely states, "We are closing in 10 minutes." Not, "Excuse me, can I help you find anything because we are closing in 10 minutes. Their hours vary by the day but their hours should be Closed everyday or sell it to someone who wants to run a business that cares about the community that keeps it open. read more

So I was in need of a miracle. My husband, a Clark Griswold wannabe spent an entire day putting up the outdoor lights only to find that the one strand of green lights needed to finish the display didn't work. We went to 2 local big box stores and came up empty handed. The hubby said, "Well, maybe Ace will have them". Went there this morning to find one box left! Khristina the awesome cashier offered to test them for me. Yikes! Only half the strand worked. She called assistant manager Mike for help. He spent at least 10 minutes working on the lights and got them all to work! It truly is a miracle in this day and age that you find people in retail who go the extra mile. The hubby works at a big box store, but makes this Ace Hardware his go to place for most of our hardware needs simply because of the customer service. Need a place that sells overpriced stuff but gives you LOTS of sass - this is your place! I wouldn't be so harsh but it is beyond believable and the cashier they have working there is very rude. She had an "Entitled - I am too good for this job and these people attitude." Sorry I wasted your time spending over $100 on Saturday at your store. I know you would rather be texting your friends or goofing off. All I was trying to do was rent a carpet shampooer to clean up all the vomit from my old dog that passed away suddenly. I hope you had time to slack off before the next customer decided to inconvenience you with a transaction. When I went to Costco the next day and realized that the weed and feed I also bought was 50% less at Costco, I decided to return it. Once again, loved the dirty look and the huffs under your breath for that transaction. I have decided not to bother your poor cashier with any more transactions....Home Depot is just as close and definitely cheaper and the cashiers don't hate their customers for being customers. Hopefully you realize that the young lady working the cashier on 04-09 and 04-12 is not a people person - send her to the stock room - and drop your prices before both drive you out of business! AND,whether they stock an item or not, you can shop online and pick it up there - have done this several times. Found a tabletop fountain online in clearance; great deal. This store is the perfect example of the employees not wanting to do their job or help a customer. I was standing looking for a bolt for 10 minutes, back and forth in-between isles and an employee that was helping another customer cuts right in front of me, not excusing himself proceeds to block the section I was looking at and the customer is the one who said 'excuse me'. Then the employee leaves without asking if I was ok or needed help? A little while later another employee comes from the back and looks at me and keeps walking to talk to another employee. I have a company account with this store and every time I go into this store and see an employee walking down the middle isle they never make eye contact or they dart out of the isle, and these are grown men!!! Another time I went in looking to have a key made, they didn't have the right key so I said I can get a blank key could you cut it, the grey haired employee with a beard told me "we don't do that". I said I would pay full price for the key I just need and extra key made....nope. After choosing convenience over dependability I made a trip to the Ace Hardware needing to replace what I bought when I got home and realized it was not what I was looking for my husband and I took a trip back to the Ace Hardware to replace the product and when we got home realized that it was shelved with what we were looking for but being tired we grabbed the wrong box. When I returned for a third time laughing at myself for making this mistake I was greeted with a crabby manager who copped major attitude at me. Choosing a box on the shelf that was closed as opposed to one that was open may have impacted our getting the wrong product but the manager was so grumpy when I brought it back already taped and perfectly ready to shelf again...I will never shop here again. read more

Great Ace Hardware store -- Friendly/helpful - entire team cashiers and guys - including management. Never a grumpy/rude cashier as I have experienced at another other Ace store in relatively recent past - although they used to be all wonderful at this other Ace Hardware until all of the nice ones were gone, replaced by most who often had same grumpy/rude/arrogant personality of most likely their hiring manager, i.e., the female Assistant Manager. The cashiers at Villa Park Ace always have a smile on their faces - are respectful and pleasant - act happy to see you walk in the door, remember you - no matter when was the last time you were in. I liked also that last year, the manager approved one of his team putting together a wheel barrel I purchased from them for me and carried it out to my car. What awesome customer service! Lastly, yesterday, I had a small emergency and did not have my phone with me - asked them if I could use their phone - did not know the number I needed to call and cashier (whose name I unfortunately forgot) got the number for me -- called the number/handed me the phone. OK! I called for a product that I could only hope they had in stock, but doubted. The young man I spoke to stayed at it, went online, looked at the stock on the shelf and DID NOT give up. Sure enough, he finally found two packages of the exact item I needed in the store! Yahooooo! Now I can get some dearly needed humidity in our house after my 'jungle' has been yelling for it for several weeks. As I approach checkout, and a staff member says there is one more customer, the girl at the register says aloud "Ohh, God!" I put my items aside and just left. Night before Thanksgiving doing some holiday shopping, and Christina was not very friendly at the check-out counter. She seemed prejudice. Maybe because it's a predominately white neighborhood, they are not used to seeing many Hispanics shoppers or seem to think we're all crooks. I was trying to show her something on a tool set I purchased by pointing at it and she rudely pushed my hand out of the way, not necessary and uncalled for. When I called to speak to the manager in charge (Mike) he was also rude and condescending. Very poor customer service. I will call the owners and see if he/she think it's okay to treat their customer's this way, but if not, then I guess I will not be spending any more of my hard earned money there. If you're not white, try a different store. The one in Addison seems to be a lot bigger and their staff is friendly and helpful no matter what race or ethnicity you are. Happy Holidays! read more
