Wasted trip. Took a damaged window screen in for repair. Got to back of store and woman was helping another customer. She was looking at the computer trying to find something. After a few minutes I could hear two other employees in the back talking. Then I looked down a hardware aisle and another employee was leaning against a shelf looking at his cell phone. After another 3 minutes I gave up and left noticing there were no other customers in the store. Told check out person I gave up waiting. Went to True Value in Berkeley and greeted as I walked in and had receipt in hand and out the door in just a few minutes. They will get my hardware business from now on. read more

There are 2 ace hardware stores in Elmhurst. The one on 1st street (by downtown - smaller one), and then this one!! This one is on the south side of Elmhurst - much much MUCH bigger!!! I'm not exactly a hardware store kinda girl. But I needed spray paint for some craft projects and they have a decent collection. Not sure why I can't find this store when I search Ace Hardware on Google maps- that should probably get fixed because that could bring a lot more traffic. Anyway the spray paints are good, decently priced. I didn't see any rub n buff. But it's close by and I'll be back if I need more. read more

I moved here about 8 months ago and shop regularly here; I prefer to support it over the local Home Depot. I went out of my way to purchase my snowblower here because it was a large purchase. I went home, put it together and then found a $25 off coupon on my counter my wife had saved. I returned a few days later with the receipt to receive my $25 off. I was told I would need to bring the snowblower back into the store in order to receive my discount. The snowblower that was out of the box and the box disposed of. Was told NO exceptions could be made. I found this unacceptable for a loyal customer who had just spent over $600 there a few days ago. I'll no longer be going out of my way to shop at this local Ace. read more

I was pleased to see this hardware store still had play sand and plenty of high-quality mulch for sale this late in the season even if still at full price. I bought as much as my car would hold and would have added mums but ran out of space. The store offers more than typical hardware store selection. I took a quick spin around and saw a big grill/accessory area and some outdoor-type toys and decoration. I bought a few really nice Chicago greeting cards- watercolor, very unique and unusual for a hardware store. Plenty of lot parking. Counter person was friendly. read more

Every month I get there $5 off coupons with a $30:00 purchase and everytime I go to use them I can't redeem them because if you buy a sale item they take the whole price of the item off the bill. Example, I spent $33.00, even with tax it was over $30.00. The item on sale was $12.99 with a $2.00 off instant saving. This item diqualified the use of the coupon. I was better off if they charged me full price for the item. Clerk was no help, acting manager was no help, everyone uses policy as a reason not to use basic customer service, and common sense. Bottom line is that I still spent $30.00. This is classic bait and switch and they do it to everyone who uses the coupon, which I witnessed at another occasion read more

Rude managers that would not get a seasonal item they had list available online and order. If the managers don't understand how online ordering works they should not offer it in their store. Stood at service counter for 5 minutes while employees complained in back, before even coming to the counter to help. We will not return. read more

Went into this store today. Two of the employees were not wearing masks. I called right away when I got home and talked to the manager who insisted all of her employees were wearing masks. I had just left the store and knew this to not be true. It is state mandated that anyone who cannot mantain 6 feet of distance from another must wear a mask. I love our local Ebel's Ace store. They have attentive employees who greet you and help you find items swiftly. Inventory is great, too. Nice store and easy in and out. Has everything you need without having to go to the huge and dreaded Home Depot. Store was clean and things easy to find. However, none of the staff were wearing mask which was rather bizarre and will cause me to most likely not go back there. Also, the cashier was carrying on a private conversation with the other checkout clerk when I was there. Needs a bit more staff professionalism at this store. read more

Gotta be a fan of this Ace Hardware. I've been coming here since I was a wee little tot. They've got the majority of everything you need here from landscape spikes to skittles. Some things can be on the borderline of pricey sometimes but they do have sales quite often plus they offer a rewards card. They have a popcorn machine at the front of the store so you can enjoy fresh, hot popcorn while doing your shopping. Also, it is in a pretty convenient location as well. It's easy to turn in and out at the light so you're not waiting 10 years to get out of the parking lot at rush hour. Plus, it's right next to a Subway, Domino's, and OBERWEIS! read more

I think the staff at Ace are always generally knowledgeable, however on my last visit here the gentleman exceeded my expectations. I had a leaky toilet and from my generic description of what was going on he diagnosed the issue, found the right product, talked me through the pitfalls to avoid and the job was accomplished for less than $20. Can't go anymore! I have put up with that awful manager Lanise so I could support a local Hardware store but not anymore. Had soil priced for 5.99, large sign outside. I asked for 5 bags and they said that wasn't the price. Would only honor 1. Then the 2 highschool girls, Grace and Mel started berating me. It was awful. I went to Home Depot and it was 5.99 a bag so I am not sure how badly it was mispriced. No customer service!! read more

I tried to do an exchange for the exact same item in a different size. The price was the same for both items however the original item was bought on sale. I live on the very North border of Elmhurst, and I go out of my way to go to this hardware store! There are so many cool little things to browse and buy outside of hardware items. They also have decent prices too. Not cheap, but moderate. You can find a lot of cool things on sale, like at this time of year I go for gardening decorations. The employees are always extremely friendly and helpful! It's also VERY clean! It is definitely worth a trip to just browse! read more

I strongly prefer going to ACE as opposed to the big box stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot. There is always someone available to answer your questions on anything from a toilet kit to superglue. The prices are competitive and if they are out of a sale item they will give you a rain check to honor the price and will even call you when it comes in. Sometimes making a trip to Home Depot is necessary but more often than not Ace is able to solve all of my needs. read more

The store ultimately had what I was looking for, but the women at the front of the store (not the cashier - the ones in the vest) are useless. I have never wandered around a hardware store for so long looking for a product without anyone to help me. The women in the front just sat talking as I walked aimlessly. I used to visit Mel's Ace Hardware frequently because it was convenient and I trusted the workers to give me advice and help with my projects. I went there two weeks ago to buy stain for the first time ever. It took Barb and another gentleman thirty minutes to find the base coat and mix the stain. When they put a sample on the paper (not wood, but paper), they said "it looks a little darker, but is a beautiful color," they said it was darker because it still needed to dry. When my contractor used the stain it was not even close to the color I ordered. Seven boards that had already been milled were completely ruined because of the mistake that Barb had made with the stain color. This mistake is costing $1,000 to replace the boards. When I went to Mel's Ace to complain they said they would only refund the cost of the stain and not any of the damage they caused. Barb admitted it was her fault and that she should not have sold me the stain. Do not shop at Mel's, not worth it. read more
