The pictures do a good job of capturing the ambiance -- relaxed, sophisticated, welcoming. The round wood paneled bar is beautiful, but it does get crowded later at night. Lelabar is a bit small, so I felt lucky snagging two seats by the window on a Thursday evening. The wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about wine. We told them what we were looking for and they let us try 3 different tastings, which I always appreciate. We also ordered a cheese plate (yum!). Good atmosphere for a date, esp a first date. Only bar seating here which isn't the coziest but I guess it's fine for normal, not so touchy people like myself. Pinot noir was good as it's a wine bar, but honestly the food was freaking weird. Well the bread and meat was amazing but the lardo was so unchewable I swallowed it whole. The eel tasted okay but it wasn't worth the effort to avoid all the bones and having to wrestle with it. With all the other good wine bars in the city I doubt I'll come back. read more

Lelabar is surely the most impressive wine bar I've ever been to. Putting aside the wine part, the bar was amazing. They packed a lot of functionality into a very tiny space. Whoever designed this bar is a genius. The bartenders are literally the center of attention, since the bar sits in the middle of the room with the guests sitting around the bar. My friends and I were just amazed at how this tiny bar had everything from a cash register, a dishwasher, and a meat slicer. The bartenders were also very friendly and a pleasure to chat with. Wow, great place! This was a total "lets see if it lives up to the Yelp hype"...and it did. The coolest thing about this place? So long as you get 2 glasses of a specific wine you can get it by the glass instead of having to buy the full bottle. An excellent option if you want to try new things. They have some incredible Bordeaux options on the list (03 Angelus was piquing my interest). I chose a 2007 Burle Gigondas and it was a fun bottle- something you can open and enjoy immediately. I went to Lelabar because of the Yelp deal I purchased. I was walking around looking for it, and just happened to catch my eye before I walked past it. The bar was packed all around at 8:00 on a Wednesday, but that could have just been because they offer $1 oysters on Monday and Wednesday. I am not a fan of these so I don't know if that is a great deal or not. Anyway, their wine list is quite decent, with the occasional wine priced in 4 digits, but hey, its New York City so what do you expect. I tried a Rioja, and was quite impressed. I also had some salami with it that came sliced very thin, and tasted like butter (really, not that expression). The glasses of wine were pretty big and reasonably priced, compared to the price of the bottle. One thing though, maybe they could have just one more server for the people sitting along the outer rim of the bar. Other than that, it was a nice time. Not too loud so you can talk to whomever you are there with. Good company and good wine is always the key to a great nigh. read more

Extremely dark and cozy. The huge circular bar is uber high, makes short people like me feel normal. The bar was designed with maximum effectiveness in mind. Why else would they make my tall and stocky server break his back every time he has to go in or out of the bar. The computer was laid flat under a sliding tray under the table. I wouldn't be surprised if they start using a tablet. They had a couple bottles already opened and recommended those first. Great dark wine bar. Our bar tender was very helpful in picking out glasses of wine and even helped us with some directions to the next stop on our evening. I found the selection of wines by the glass left something to be desired but overall the menu has a nice variety of options. I've been here twice, once on a groupon coupon, which was a wonderful experience. The bartenders were so helpful in picking out cheeses that went along with the wine we were drinking, we spent a good two or three hours there just drinking glass after glass and trying different selections from the menu. The ambiance is nice, it's not too loud, and it never feels overcrowded. It was on our mind for months after that experience and my roommate and I recently had a chance to go back. It was just as good the second time around. We took advantage of their happy hour and helped ourselves to almost two bottles of wine and two cheese plates. Even for a Saturday it still wasn't too crowded or overwhelming (the way places can often get in the city) and we were completely pleased with our Saturday evening. Love Lelabar, and try making it over here whenever I can. Started becoming a regular here about a year ago, and really like how it's always a good time. I like to come here after work to mellow out, or bring friends here to get them hooked on the place too. Because they have such a wide slection of wine, cheese, meat, and small plates, I normally trust the bartender/chef to pick something out for me. Get to know the bartenders! Chris, Heather, John, Naveen are all great. Yesterday for food I tried a sharp sheep's milk cheese, tasso ham and wild boar salami- awesome. Mixing it up wine-wise, I had a delicious sparkling rose. Do yourself a favor and try their fresh, handmade CHOCOLATES. You'll never go back to your friends Ghiradelli or Godiva ever again. I dream about the cashew caramel turtle with sea salt and the earl gray with milk and dark chocolate. Great winebar with an amazing selection of wine and small plates/cheeses/olives! The ambiance and music is great. The waitress was very helpful and let us try a few wines before deciding which one we wanted. Their Chablis by the glass is very smooth. Try the 3 for $12 plate of cheese/meat/olives, comes with apricot spread and mustard. Everything is very fresh. Wines are a little pricey($14/glass and up) but you get what you pay for. A lovely charming spot. Mainly composed of a large oval bar in the center with a few counters by the window, it's very intimate and cozy. Wine selection is phenomenal and the bartenders are young, cool, personable, fun, and very very knowledgable about the menu. What's great is that you can get any wine on the menu by the glass even if there isn't a glass price listed, so long as you commit yourself to 2 glasses (or half the bottle). Perfect for sharing and exploring the menu! One thing to note -- the menu is not for the faint of heart. Bottles average $90, I'd say, so not necessarily an everyday casual stopover place (although I haven't checked out happy hour). Highly recommended, regardless. read more

Every neighborhood needs a wine bar like Lelabar. If it wasn't that far we could have easily spend half the week sitting at that comfortable oval bar after work enjoying a glass or two from a large selection of bottles along with delicious little snacks. Whenever our path crosses this area we make sure we stop by to taste their latest bottles. Really friendly bunch of guys behind the bar and Wednesdays and Saturdays they have the oyster special. Their food offering also expanded so you can easily have dinner while enjoying great bottles of wine. Great place for a cheese and wine night cap. The variety of cheese seemed a little limited for those who love all types (lots of soft ones, not many bleu's) but for me, the bartender suggested two which fit my flavor profile perfectly. The cheese board, which was prepared right at the bar, included french bread and a pineapple jelly. I really don't know too much about wine, but we were served a glass of Syrah which fit well with our chosen cheeses and also tasted good alone. The staff were super friendly, even as I waited without my friend for around ten minutes just perusing the menu. The interior was cosy and had a nice ambience, although the AC was a little cold which took away from the otherwise warm look and feel of the place, but not a huge issue. The happy hour deals and suggested wine flights are well priced, but otherwise buying by the glass can get a little pricey. I think it's great that the staff let you taste your wine before you commit to the whole glass. Foodwise, some very fresh looking oysters and lovely cheese and charcuterie selections, prepared with care on the spot. This is one of my two favorite wine bars in the city. Excellent selection of wines and a low key vibe make this a great place for a date or to meet up with a friend. Most other people go on a Wednesday for $1 oysters. I say go any other day as its less crowded. On Sundays they have wine tastings with varying themes each week (pinot's from around the world, wines from Spain, etc.) that are paired with a light fare. 6 wines plus the snacks are $60 a person, which is a little bit pricey as you're not getting 6 glasses, you're getting 6 tastings. I was split on giving Lelabar 5 stars. Perhaps the overpriced wine tastings is what pushed me towards 4 stars. read more

This was a very good find. They have a very nice menu that consists of a lot of small bites, cured meats, cheeses, wine by the glass and bottle, bottle beers and a few sandwiches. We had some nice Brie and beef loin, delish! The lamb sausage was very close to "sucuk / sojouk". It was very tasty to me though my boyfriend found it to be a little too salty. The only issue we had here is that our bread was COLD. Warm bread would have completed my life for the night. Next time hopefully..... read more

Loved Lelabar. The waiters were so attentive and the space is really interesting -- set up as a sort of elliptical bar around the central area where the bartenders are. The food is excellent and considering it's located in the west village, the ambiance and attitude of the place is very chill. Wouldn't say it's cheap, but it really hits the spot for a ladies' night. The cheese platters they put together are amazing and it pairs so perfectly with the wine. The atmosphere is really calm and never gets too loud, but it still feels intimate and private when you're there to have a nice chat with someone. This bar is across the street from my office so have stopped by here on occasion and have seen it very crowded, very quiet or in between -- it tends to draw an after-work crowd. The space is relatively small with an efficient set-up -- long circular bar in the middle of a rectangular room -- and has a cozy feel. Very good selection of wines.
