A guy came out and asked if I needed a smog and told me it would be about 20 minutes while they finish another vehicle. Settled down in their waiting room and sat on my smartphone. This used to be a reputable business, now they're crooks. Had repairs done on my car due to check engine light being on then had the repair shop check the codes before going in and this business failed it. Drove around some more (as instructed to) and came back for a free retest. It took them 2 minutes to fail it again. When confronted with what the mechanic said he retested (with the plug in detector) it showed no codes so he did it again until it showed a code. They're crooks and the counter man is horrible, zero customer skills. My guess is if I paid another $65 my car would pass. read more

I messaged Lee's auto smog using the yelp quote feature in order to see if I would be able to come in the next morning to get my car smogged. He messaged me back within 3 minutes and let me know that I could come in the next morning at any time, even offering to come in early to get my car smogged. I went ahead and scheduled an appointment for the next morning, I showed up and the first thing I noticed was that this place was so much cleaner than most smog shops. I've been using Lee's for several years now ever since I was referred here by my trusted mechanic shop (Bruce's Tire, which is conveniently right across the street). The service has always been fast, friendly, and problem free which is about all you can ask for from a smog shop. The store itself is a little cluttered with few amenities but it is within easy walking distance of downtown Gilroy and you can leave your car to get smogged while you shop or eat if that's your thing. I did read the poor review that mentioned some guy named 'Steve' giving a customer a bad time. To be honest after many visits over the years for my multiple vehicles I have never seen any one else here except Le Nguyen who is the owner and he has never been anything but polite. Brought my 80's Jeep in to get smogged here since this is one of the only 4 shops in town that has a smog dyno to run pre OBD cars, after dropping off my Jeep and walking into town for lunch he called me 30 min later and told me he couldn't figure out how to move my Jeep...... even though it's an automatic transmission....... this was my first red flag but I happily walked back and moved my Jeep onto the dyno for him and told him it needed warmed up for a few minutes since it was now completely cold (anyone who knows older cars and smog knows your catalytic converter must be warmed up prior to smog check as heat activates the metals in the catalytic converter making it work) but he didn't seem to care, with my thermostat still reading 120 degrees which is cold he ran the smog test, putting my Jeep manually into 1st gear he ran the 15mph test at about 3000rpm which is ridiculously high for my Jeep then he went to the 25mph test and kept my transmission locked into 1st gear and tried to run it on the 25mph test at full wide open throttle near the rev limiter which made me very very uncomfortable with and made my engine and tires smoke! after going out and asking him if it was normal to run a smog check at that high of rpm and cold and he said yes that he does every pre OBD smog check this way and that it was completely normal what I was seeing, he then brought me into the shop and proceeded to Show me that my Jeep failed smog with numbers so high it couldn't believe my eyes! He then tells me that my check engine light had been tampered and that some of the smog equipment wasn't correct and that it would cost me about $2000 for his friend to fix my Jeep and pass smog, this all seemed very odd to me as first off my Jeep is an mid 80's model and is therefore pre OBD(so no check engine light) and I happen to work at an off-road shop in San Jose and know for a fact that all smog equipment was up to compliance and that I passed smog 2 years ago with all of the same equipment, I asked him a few questions about why the smog equipment wasn't correct but he wouldn't give me a real answer he just kept saying it was wrong,I left his shop and promptly went down the street to another smog shop and told him the situation he laughed and told me that Mr.Lee has a nasty habit of trying to rip people off and fail smogs for no reason he then opened my hood todo the inspection and found the Mr.Lee has disconnected 2 of my spark plug wires so that the fuel would go straight into the exhaust and fail my Jeep no matter what, he reconnected my spark plug wires and I passed smog an hour lwith flying colors,my advise unless your this guys cousin stay as far away from here as possible they are plane old crooks here and it's sad to see this kinda business being operated in such a small community read more

This guy is a rip off. He charged me $80 for a 4 cylinder car smog, when his sign said $60. Then he does the smog and fails my car because of a factory installed after market air filter. I gave him the CARB EO number which exempts it and over rides the system. He said he can't do it by the number and I need to pay for a sticker for it to pass. Shady. I have had this car for 10 yrs and never had this issue before. read more

I was in Gilroy for my mom's funeral two years ago and realized I needed a smog check as the registration was expiring. My dad and I took my car to Lee's Auto Smog. He did it while I waited and as it was raining, let my 93 year old father stay in the car while he did the smog check. Easy peasy, in and out and on our way very quickly. This guy is incompetent! He told be my MBZ failed the smog test because the speedometer was broken. The speedometer sensor is connected to the front wheels not the rear wheel which he had on the "treadmill". When I pointed out his obvious mistake he argured with me abour how the MBZ was designed. read more

He doesn't deserve only one bad review - Just because he doesn't like the Mercedes Benz design doesn't mean he doesn't provide a good service. I see that as a plus by the way. I have been going to this guy ever since I moved to Gilroy 4 years ago. I wouldn't go to anyone else - even if I moved back to San Jose. He is the most friendly guy, he gets you in and out fast and he knows what he is doing. He is just another struggling immigrant trying to navigate the state government bureaucracy required to operate such a business and make an honest living. You will feel relaxed, not rushed and no stress involved in getting your car smogged as well. His prices are very reasonable. read more

If I had looked at prior Yelp reviews of this shop, I would have thought it was a great place to go. My experience was absolutely the opposite and was horrible. I DO have to admit that, on my initial visit, I did not pass the smog check,and that the owner DID correctly diagnose the problem; however, he charged me $20 extra for using "aftermarket parts" (what was THIS all about?). When I had the problem fixed, and went to have the "free" re-check performed, he found a new "additional" problem which he said required "120 subsequent miles of driving" before he could properly re-check it, and was going to charger me another $10. I left Lee, and subsequently sought the opinion of another repair shop. This 2nd shop was not licensed to perform official smog checks, but did have the proper equipment for such. They performed a "courtesy" smog check (which came up clean) and indicated that Lee's Auto Smog is notorious for this "additional problem - 120 mile drive". They recommended a 3rd shop, which was licensed to perform smog checks. Not only did my car pass the smog check at this 3rd shop, this other shop changed much less to diagnose the problem than Lee's shop charged. Essentially, I paid Lee's a large price and got nothing out of it. (I notice that my experience is almost identical to what "Jennifer O." experienced about charging more than his sign indicates, and for using after market parts) read more
