We normally drive out to Richmond to have Chinese food; we were both pleasantly surprised with the quality of the meal. We had a couple of the warm appetizers and a Seafood with silken tofu Hot Pot. The appys were fine; the hot pot was delicious with a nice variety of seafood including fish slices, squid and prawns. The silken tofu was lightly deep fried giving it a nice textured skin, the tofu remained silky and tasty. Best of all, it came to the table piping hot. The seasoning was perfect and not overly salty as most Chinese restaurants. The service was friendly and attentive; we spoke to the owner briefly; she is very proud of her little eatery. We plan to return soon to try the lamb dish with cumin the next table obviously enjoyed and other traditional Shanghainese dishes!

I started to wonder if this was a watered-down version of Thai food to suit the local non-spicy palate? The staff was speaking French to a table of customers. Uh-oh. It took a long while before anyone (there were 2 of them front of house) came over to me. During that time, I was contemplating if I should just walk out. So service was indeed spotty. One staff was more helpful than the other. I wanted the pad krapow gai (basil minced chicken), unfortunately they did not have that. So I had the basil chicken which was in slices instead of minced. There is a difference in the dish even though both are basil chicken. I requested for the spice level to be like in Thailand (hot). The food arrived and it was spicy, but not overly spicy like in Thailand. It was ok. You had to order the rice separately and at $2.75 a bowl, it was quite expensive. It was just rice! Even though the restaurant did not have many dine in customers, there were plenty of people calling in to place orders for take out. So I guessed maybe this was the only decent Thai place for the people living in this area? The food was not bad, but it is just not the best Thai food around.

Unfortunately, our visit today was extremely upsetting because of the way we were treated by the manager, Ms. Yang (possibly Rihanna Yang). During our visit, there was a misunderstanding regarding our order. A chicken dish was brought to our table, but we had not ordered it. I immediately explained that we did not order this dish and that I do not eat chicken due to an allergy/preference. We had ordered a fish dish instead. Instead of calmly checking the order or trying to resolve the misunderstanding, Ms. Yang repeatedly insisted, in a very loud voice in front of other customers, that we had ordered the chicken dish and that we had to eat it. She continued saying that we had to accept the dish and pay for it, even after I explained multiple times that we did not order it. The situation became very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Other customers were watching as she raised her voice at us. I politely asked her several times to please calm down and not speak to us in that manner, but she continued insisting and arguing. I even confirmed with my assistant, who was sitting with me, that neither of us had ordered the chicken dish, and she also confirmed that she had not heard us order it. A professional way to handle this situation would have been to apologize for the misunderstanding, check the order, and offer a solution. Instead, we felt pressured and disrespected. By the end of the interaction, I had completely lost my appetite and could no longer enjoy the food we had ordered. After asking her to remove the dish, she eventually took it away but told us that we were no longer welcome at the restaurant. After being loyal customers for almost a year, I found this response extremely disappointing and unacceptable. I understand that mistakes can happen in restaurants, but the way a situation is handled is what defines good customer service. Unfortunately, the way this matter was handled was unprofessional, embarrassing, and made us feel unwelcome.
