Muleshoe might be a small town but their restaurants are full of life and flavor. I love a family owned business and Leal's has been in business forever. The food is good and the service is good. Every time I visit I stop and get the enchiladas but beware the bottomless chips and salsa will fill you up! Stopped for dinner while traveling through town and we were pleasantly surprised by this family-owned restaurant. The food was good, and the service was excellent. We are on our way out of TX to move up north and decided to get our last bit of Mexican food before we have none for a long while. I was hesitant to get Mexican food in this city, but we were definitely not disappointed! I ordered the chicken fajita chimichanga and added chili con carne sauce on top, my husband had the Leal Special. We both thoroughly enjoyed our dish and it definitely hit the spot! This is a must stop if you are driving through the town. Service was spectacular and quick! We got our food within 10 minutes of ordering. In and out of the restaurant in about 35 minutes! We paused our travels for the day in Muleshoe, TX in one of the motels along the road. Being evening we were of course hungry, so we called ahead just to confirm Leal's was open. Happily, they had their dining room open until 9pm, so we walked over. It was much larger and more spacious on the inside that you expected looking at it from outside! We were seated well away from other patrons, and the staff were all wearing masks and gloves as COVID-19 precaution. Our waiter, Chris, was beyond hospitable and friendly-- and attentive as well, checking in on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed while we were there. He really was the sweetest fella. He even offered to get us refills of our Pepsi to-go at the end! :) My mom and I both got chicken enchiladas and they were quite yummy! Not spicy, nor was the salsa, but we are both pretty mild people when it comes to spicy-ness, LOL. The chips had a yummy flavoring and saltiness to them (it would've been nicer if they'd been a little warmer, but we were there really close to closing time, so I understand). Wait time between placing our order and getting our food was quite short. It was obvious the place has a history, what with the pictures on the wall and in the menu, along with the "traditional dish" they still serve. Driving through Muleshoe, it looked like the whole town was eating here! So we decided to give it a go. When you walk in all the aromas hit you and you know it gonna be good. I had Irma's Special; chile relleno, beef taco, chicken enchilada with beans and rice. Everything was seasoned perfectly!! Not too hot, just enough to sniff a little! LOL! I really do like the food here, all of the entrees are just great from the naked rellonos stuffed with shrimp, bacon and fajita meat to the grilled chicken plates that are just really good. The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the climate is nice and cool in the summer and toasty in the winter. The only thing that has always bothered me is the ridiculously small restroom that is never really clean and forget about a finding a paper towel that isn't already wet because it just sits out by the roll (not in the dispenser) wherever you can find a place to put it. Seriously you have to move the trash can to sit on the commode, it's pretty much about the size of a small RV restroom. You know it just simply would not take a lot of money to make the small restroom acceptable I didn't say accessible that isn't happening. Anyway the food is great right? I'm not even going to give the soap dispenser a comment the picture says it all. I'll be back just for the cheese dip though. read more

I got stuck in town overnight in my big rig and asked a couple locals where to eat and they directed me here. The parking lot alone made the trip worth while in my truck, but the real treat was waiting inside. A warm and cozy atmosphere greeted me along with the warm smile of the hostess. The menu is extensive with tons of authentic cuisine and the waitress was incredibly helpful when I asked for recommendations. Not wanting to waste my opportunity, I chose an appetizer as well as my entree and brought half of each home in a Togo container. Absolutely a great place for locals and definitely recommend visiting if you're in the area on business or for pleasure. read more

For this place to only have one review is a crime. Whether you are passing through or stuck in Muleshoe, this is the one place I have consistently enjoyed in the area. A little bit of history: this is the original Leal's - which is a west Texas stable of Tex Mex. There are other locations (I ate at the Clovis one last week too) but this is hole-in-the-wall greatness. Their chips are thick corn and the salsa is more red tomato than spicy peppers. Add some seasoning on the chips - it's on the table. I think I eat three bowls of the chips by myself everytime I go. Lots of typical Tex-Mex fair... I usually get the enchiladas, but I have never eaten with anyone who complained about the meal. No, it is not going to help you keep your diet, but there is a reason why they classify it as "comfort food." read more

After 9 hours on the road, the lack of alcohol here was a bit disappointing but that was quickly overshadowed by the really good food. Stopped at Leal's because previous reviews mentioned ample parking for big rigs. We are in a motor home and towing a car so this was important. The food was perfect! When we go home to visit the fam, Leal's is a MUST. This past trip we went twice in 4 days. It's THAT good. This place is always busy, especially after church on Sundays. But you typically don't have to wait too long for a table. The prices are very reasonable, and all the food I've ever tried has been delicious. My husband always gets the Irma Platter, which has an enchilada, taco, and chile relleno, plus rice and beans. It's huge! Each item has a distinct flavor too, so the variety is nice. Nothing is too spicy here either. One of my favorite features is the chips and salsa that arrive at your table when you sit down, and each person gets their own ramekin of salsa. The salsa is always flowing, so never worry if you've run out. They will promptly bring you more. They have tons of the classic Mexican dishes, but be brave and try some of their special items, like their sour cream sauce enchiladas. This is the original restaurant. We stopped in on a day that cannon Air Force Base had an air show. There was a lot of people traveling to Lubbock and stop to eat here. The restaurant was completely packed with a 30 minute wait. I would have waited an hour because the food is that good! Along with the drink came a large amount of chips and salsa. The salsa was more tomato than anything but very good. More seasoning is available on the table. For lunch I had the #8 combination of an enchilada and Chile relleno. My plate was promptly served. The meal was very good and fairly priced. The chile relleno had a thicker breading than I'm accustomed to but still very yummy. Raven, my server, checked on me several times throughout. She was very kind and thorough. Always loved eating at Leal,s for years. Food is good and sometimes excellent. I have received gifts papers from friends to eat here and guess what happened!!! Gift papers were refused and nothing was offered, not food or cash! they demanded cash payment, saying they no longer accept gift papers which they issued. this is theft as far as I am concerned. Disappointing never knew that Mexican food could be so bland. Ordered a Lauras special and if I wanted a soft taco with cheese sauce that's what I would have ordered. Was suppose to have fajita beef and veggies got ground beef and a couple of red pepper pieces and no flavor tasted like fried hamburger wrapped in a soft flour wrap with cheese sauce dumped over it. And if they ask if you want guacamole or sour cream make sure you ask if it comes with the meal almost $7.00 for the guacamole and probably not more than an ice cream scoop. Wife got a Leal's special hard taco shell was so stale you could bend it in half and found the entire plate flavorless.
