Heading east past Albuquerque and Santa Rosa, there are few spots to stop and eat before you head farther into Texas. I looked on Yelp for a recommendation and found Del's Restaurant in Tucumcari, NM on Route 66 of all places. What an unexpected find. Heading into town we were a little worried as it appeared many businesses had closed but there were also many cute little hotels and shops. It was quite the bustling small town. The parking lot is huge so plenty of parking, even for RV's and travel trailers. Del's is the popular restaurant in town. It was busy. The staff was welcoming from the front host to our hostess Kaylee who was very attentive and sweet. She always had a huge smile on her face. The restaurant is part gift shop with all kinds of Route 66 memorabilia with an old time candy counter. But don't let that deter you, it does have a proper dining area. The restaurant also has a small bar in a separate area with a couple of TV's. The menu is pretty big with American and Mexican fare. We both elected to order the fajitas. I ordered steak and my husband ordered the brisket. Both were very tasty. I believe the corn and flour tortillas were homemade. The only thing we didn't care for was the guacamole. It just did not taste like real avocados. If you are passing by on I-40, I would recommend pulling off and grabbing a bite at Del's. read more

My husband and I were going to eat dinner here last night. The wait was over twenty minutes and we could not get a drink at the bar while we waited. You can only get a drink at the bar if you are eating at the bar. After a long hot day of riding we really wanted a cold beer. I had the salad bar and was not disappointed in the verity of pasta salads. If we ever come back thru this little town we will definitely make this a stop for some great food. We diverted to Business Route 66 and among several derelict buildings parked here because this resto sounded interesting in Yelp reviews, and it boasted a menu of broad choices for lunch. Diane opted for a French Dip with a slice of Provolone, and French Fries, while I selected a Guacamole Salad and a Ground Beef Chalupa that was served on a plate with Mexican Rice and Refried Beans. The Guac was authentic, with tomatoes and onions, but somewhat bitter, and served with thin Tortilla Chips. The Fries tasted dead. Our server twice forgot to bring requested napkins. My wife and I stopped here for dinner. The waitress was attentive at the start, but was hard to find later. She was nice enough to bring us a little sampler of their chile beers (see photo). I opted for the chile relleno because of the positive reviews. I was not quite so enamored - it is breaded and deep fried with a crispy crust, not at all like the typical eggy coating most people use. It was like eating a mozzarella stick. You may like it and conclude it's the best relleno you've had but I didn't. My wife had the salad bar, which she thought was just OK. Nice selection of prepared salads, but she thought they were a bit lacking in flavor. The interior of the place is interesting with lots of Route 66 artifacts, etc. Overall, not bad, but we didn't find it outstanding either. read more

Wow! This place is worth the detour off the highway. To start the salsa was spicy delicious I actually had to buy a couple jars from the gift shop it was so good. My chicken Sope was so good too! Juicy chicken, perfectly cooked sope dough, flavorful and spicy sauce. Even the rice on the side had chiles in it - YUM! We were able to sit outside with our dog and eat. Tourist rip off at the bar. Food was decent and ample. Drinks were a complete rip off, maybe because they knew we were tourists. Wife ordered a bourbon and ginger ale. They had no ginger ale so I got one out of our car. The drink ( maybe a 1 oz pour) was $12 at happy hour times (5-7). 16 oz draft was ok but I paid less in New Orleans and Dallas on my way here. Boxed wine $10 for 5-6 oz pour. Bill came with two glasses of wine when I only had 1. Go for the food, avoid drinks unless you know what they are charging and look the bill over. This is the experience that will keep me from ever visiting again and not recommending. These old tourist towns are dying and they wonder WHY? Now I know why. read more

We love stopping at roadside diners on our road trips and particularly love the ones in Tucumcari. This one, however disappointed. We stopped in on Saturday around 2. The place was empty except about 5 tables of diners. The host wasn't around but one of the servers got us seated right away. We were excited about the menu and especially the salad bar. we sat for over 10 minutes and still no one had taken our drink order. my 10-year old asked one of the many servers if someone could take our order and was told someone would be "right with us". we waited another 5 minutes and watched as another table was seated and orders taken. we got up and left with a very hungry and very disappointed child. completely unacceptable especially for a slow afternoon and plenty of employees. read more

I'm on a cross-country road trip. Being on historic Route 66, I was looking for hearty Amer'can fare, you know: roast beef, meatloaf, that kind of dinner. Del's looked perfect. They were out of roast beef, so I looked at options. "I DO like liver and onions..." I began, (the end of that sentence was going to be "...but it's rare to find a place does it right.") The server said, "Oh, it's GOOD!" in a way that made me think this classic diner *knew* how American should be made. I wish I'd gone with my intuition. The liver arrived overcooked, dry, tough, and flavorless. The texture of the baked potato seemed...off - like it had been made the day before. The scoop of sour cream arrived in a container, with a bath of whey around it, like it too had been sitting out too long. I realize I'm including minute detail, but there's a reason. These are the things I considered later that night while I (quite violently) threw up for hours. Was it the watery sour cream? The old-looking potato? The leathery liver? The next morning I was still too weak to travel so I had to stay at my hotel another day. I told the clerk I'd gotten food poisoning at Dels. They said they'd never eat there and I wasn't the first guest who'd told her they got sick after eating there. The Yelp prompt asks how was the service - It was great. We had a great dinner along Route 66 to cap off our Colorado/New Mexico trip. The food was classic, with lots of burgers, sandwiches, a salad bar and some entrees. I loved my catfish with roasted vegetables and very-lemony rice pilaf. My cousin chose the salad bar with her chicken and her husband had the chicken-fried steak, which seemed very popular. He cleaned his plate! The servings were large, and we did our best. I even had a reasonably-priced glass of wine. Our server was cheerful and probably the most helpful and knowledgable of anyone we encountered on our trip. We parked our huge truck in their generous parking lot. Upon walking inside for lunch we were greeted immediately with a smile. Once seated our sweet waitperson arrived taking our drink order, which was iced tea. It was delicious, crisp and freshly brewed. We both ordered steak fingers. Oh my gosh -- they arrived piping hot after just being prepared perfectly. I've never had steak fingers but this dish was somehow fried, not greasy at all, and served with milk gravy on the side for dipping. I loved this heavenly concoction! We each had different sides. Coleslaw, pinto beans, onion rings, and French fries. Each accompanying side was perfect. That is why we decided to order brisket and chicken fajitas to heat for tomorrow's supper since we're driving 8-hours. I explained that. They packed them so reheating will be easy and the veggies won't be a mess. The ambiance of the restaurant/bar was eclectic. An player piano was near us. The lights were all different and there was something to see everywhere. It wasn't overdone just interesting and clean. They have a wee gift shop and I noticed a meeting/banquet room on the other side. The menu also offered a variety of adult refreshments. One of my favorite things was seeing the regular customers come in and being warmly greeted by the waitstaff by name. We highly recommend this place and will return when in the area! Tried Del's last weekend, since Kix 66 (a couple of doors down) is still out of commission after a fire. Very Large menu with just about anything you could want: Chicken Fried Steak, Meatloaf, Liver, Fish, Shrimp, sandwiches, and a big selection of New Mexican dishes. I had the Crispitos-basically big Taquitos smothered in green chile gravy. It had lots of chicken and was very tasty, and came with sopapillas. My partner had one of the NM combos-it was good, but nothing special. Our companions both had BLT's, and their sandwiches were not only big, but had plenty of bacon inside. I also liked our WARM complimentary chips and salsa. The service was GREAT - our waitress was very attentive. Don't get to Tucumcari very often, but we've for a new favorite restaurant there. read more

She was pleasant & offered us chips & salsa which we did not get until the end of our meal. Had to ask 5 times. My meal was very good. Husband did not get what he ordered. He ordered 1 beef & 1 chicken enchilada. He got bitter chili on a tortilla. So spicy he couldn't eat it. We tried 2 times to tell her it wasn't what he ordered. She finally took his plate away & didn't return with his order. She finally brought the bill. Consequently no tip. Hopefully she'll get better at her job. I've never seen a place NOT want to do business so badly before! Had my dog with me and they are shown as patio friendly for dogs. Huge patio on Route 66. A storm had passed through and there was another storm on the way. I asked to have a beer on the patio and place a to-go order. Was told "no" to both because the storm was on the way and mosquitos were bad (in truth, they were). If they had even just said we'll take your to-go order and you can wait under the awning I'd have been fine but that was not an option. They were not busy at all so this made zero sense if you want to thrive as a business. Thumbs down. read more
