My French dip was good but a little bland. The pinto beans were good. The chicken fried steak was good, the gravy on it made it taste better. Sweet potato fries were quite tasty.

Lunch combo with a rolled enchilada.

Five stars for its historical significance. Del's in Tucumcari. Played Willin' as we pulled into town. Del's since 1956. My first NM enchiladas . If I was James Bond, I might have said: "Enchiladas. Stacked not rolled. Christmas."

Heading east past Albuquerque and Santa Rosa, there are few spots to stop and eat before you head farther into Texas. I looked on Yelp for a recommendation and found Del's Restaurant in Tucumcari, NM on Route 66 of all places. What an unexpected find. Heading into town we were a little worried as it appeared many businesses had closed but there were also many cute little hotels and shops. It was quite the bustling small town. The parking lot is huge so plenty of parking, even for RV's and travel trailers. Del's is the popular restaurant in town. It was busy. The staff was welcoming from the front host to our hostess Kaylee who was very attentive and sweet. She always had a huge smile on her face. The restaurant is part gift shop with all kinds of Route 66 memorabilia with an old time candy counter. But don't let that deter you, it does have a proper dining area. The restaurant also has a small bar in a separate area with a couple of TV's. The menu is pretty big with American and Mexican fare. We both elected to order the fajitas. I ordered steak and my husband ordered the brisket. Both were very tasty. I believe the corn and flour tortillas were homemade. The only thing we didn't care for was the guacamole. It just did not taste like real avocados. If you are passing by on I-40, I would recommend pulling off and grabbing a bite at Del's.

A cute hole on the wall with a great salad bar. We had lunch specials that included chips and salsa (spicy) Mexican delight and carne

We really enjoyed this local favorite restaurant. Arrive early they fill up fast. They have great American and New Mexico menu items. The chips and salsa were handmade and super fresh. Really good steak and chicken fried steak.

We diverted to Business Route 66 and among several derelict buildings parked here because this resto sounded interesting in Yelp reviews, and it boasted a menu of broad choices for lunch. Diane opted for a French Dip with a slice of Provolone, and French Fries, while I selected a Guacamole Salad and a Ground Beef Chalupa that was served on a plate with Mexican Rice and Refried Beans. The Guac was authentic, with tomatoes and onions, but somewhat bitter, and served with thin Tortilla Chips. The Fries tasted dead. Our server twice forgot to bring requested napkins. And a fly hovered near our table. The ambiance was that of a festive cantina. XXX-1/2 Stars overall!

My wife and I stopped here for dinner. The waitress was attentive at the start, but was hard to find later. She was nice enough to bring us a little sampler of their chile beers (see photo). I opted for the chile relleno because of the positive reviews. I was not quite so enamored - it is breaded and deep fried with a crispy crust, not at all like the typical eggy coating most people use. It was like eating a mozzarella stick. You may like it and conclude it's the best relleno you've had but I didn't. My wife had the salad bar, which she thought was just OK. Nice selection of prepared salads, but she thought they were a bit lacking in flavor. The interior of the place is interesting with lots of Route 66 artifacts, etc. Overall, not bad, but we didn't find it outstanding either.

I visited on a Monday evening, around 5pm. That's usually the time us old folks eat. I had no issue getting a table. Promptly seated, I ordered a beer and my dinner. The menu is a good mix, something for everyone. I ordered the Chili Rellenos. Of course I ordered that. Hey, when in Rome..... My meal was served quick and hot. Waiting a minute to cool was definitely in the cards. No problem, I had my beer, salsa and chips to occupy me while the steam settled. After a bit, I dug in. First fork was the rice. Oh, was that rice ever good! The only problem was that there wasn't enough. I suggest that you order a side of that glorious grain. Fantastic! The refried beans, well, were ok, but just ok. The Hatch greenies, as you'd expect, were outstanding and very flavorful. I ordered them Christmas style, with green and red sauce. Both of those condiments were tasty, but of the two, the green sauce stood out. Boy did it ever. I'll be dreaming of that sauce later tonight. Hopefully my girlfriend doesn't pop into the picture.....OR, maybe she should! LoL, now that would be a dream! Don't worry about parking, as there is more than ample. You can park in the front, the back, either side, and if you're driving a big rig, pulling a trailer, or driving a tank, they've got you covered. Across the street is special parking for those vehicles. More parking outside than tables inside. Pay La Cita a visit for a romantic dinner, or as I did, by yourself....my dream trend may have helped with that. Hey, I may be old, but certainly not dead! Quick Tip: I parked in the back, and when leaving, I took the dirt alley. It was a fun adventure. I'd suggest that you do it during daylight hours though. You never know who you'll run into, or for that matter, over! Let's hope it isn't Skinny Pete or Badger.

Based off of the other Yelp reviews, I had high hopes, but unfortunately, we were let down by this place. We ordered online and ordered multiple different dishes in order to try them out. Here are the dishes that I got: Brisket Burrito: The meat was dried out and tasted several days old and reheated. The burrito also didn't seem to have the pan fried potatoes that were supposed to be in it. Tacos al Carbon: From the first bite I knew I wasn't going to eat these; the steak tasted weird, with a weird texture, and seemed old. Enchilladas: I got them with beef & green sauce; the beef had a decent flavor and texture. Stuffed Sopapilla: The sopapilla itself had a good comfort food type of taste and texture. I got it with beef & green sauce. The beef had a decent flavor and texture. As for the sides--the Mexican rice just tasted like salt, and the beans were bland and flavorless. If you're looking for fresh, yummy Mexican food--don't waste your money on this place. I have no idea how it has so many good Yelp reviews.

The building is bright and fun colored, and really has a 50s touch to it. The cafes interior was so warm and welcoming. Cushioned chairs, newspapers, lots of plants, Route 66 books laid out to read ... it is absolutely a peaceful place to spend your morning. Butter yellows, rich greens, and brick walls! Just so homey. I ordered an iced hazelnut latte, coffee cake and peach and ginger yogurt parfait! AMAZING! The coffee was a great mix of strong coffee flavored and sweet hazelnut. Coffee cake was yummy with small walnuts throughout, moist cinnamon parts and a crisp top! My yogurt parfait was my favorite, the peach and ginger addition being a compote. So unique and delicious, I'm so glad I tried it. Drew got two quiches and a strawberry lemonade! He loved both. The staff was extremely welcoming, helpful and kind to us while ordering, and offered to box up my coffee cake for the road. Making conversation about where we are from and what brings us here, they really made us feel at home all the way in New Mexico!

I usually wind up here just passing through and have had a hard time finding something reliable that's Not A Chain, so this fits the bill. I rolled the dice and tried the online ordering, and my food was ready a lot faster than I thought it would be. Granted, I ordered an hour before closing (sorry) so your mileage may vary. It's a little on the expensive side, but whatever. It's like a hundred dollars to step out of your house anymore. I got out of here just under twenty bucks for a double New Mexico burger, a large fry, and a shake. The patties aren't really seasoned, but they're cooked well, and if you add the chopped chiles and some bacon, you'll be just fine. The seasoned fries are tasty. The shakes are average, but sometimes that chocolate syrup predictability is exactly what you need after hours of driving. The folks working here are friendly and diligent. So, despite the fact I spend most of my time in Tucumcari asleep, this burger definitely woke me up out of the zombie haze that i40 does to people. Looking forward to my next stop here. Don't let the lights on 66 go out. :)
