Stale pita bread and pretty decent baba ghanoush

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I was truly looking forward to enjoying this place because the Yelp reviews seem to rave about the cozy atmosphere, wonderful service, and the fresh food preparation.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But although I found the restaurant to be cozy and my server to be friendly, the food though freshly prepared was just average at best. Let me explain. So, after perusing the menu, I saw a few Mediterranean staples, such as, baba-ghanoush, lentil soup, and a beef Shawarma entrée. So I decided to order all three of those items. Now, let me tell you not only was I excited to taste the food here, but I truly wanted to experience what a majority of people on yelp said about this place and its food. But I soon discovered that you truly cannot trust other peoples opinions when it comes to food. You just literally have to try it yourself to see if it even resembles that cuisines standard benchmarks. Well anyway, let me get to what I thought about the food. The lentil soup it's pretty tasty, but it would serve lukewarm. The baba-ghanoush was also tasty, but the pita bread was stale and void of any flavor. And as for the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, it was literally chopped up cubes of beef! Nothing near to what a standard Shawarma entrée should resemble, or let alone taste like! To be quite honest, I was so disenchanted with the Shawarma entrée that I asked my server to take it away and just give me the bill. I was ready to go! But my server genuinely saw my disappointment with this so-called Beef Shawarma that she pleaded with me to try another entrée. So I asked her to recommend another entrée to me. And she recommended the Skewered Chicken entrée. So, I caved in and went ahead and ordered this Skewered Chicken entrée. But I should've just went with my gut feeling and just should have paid the bill and left. I say this because it took forever for them to prepare this Skewered Chicken entrée and I mean forever! [[HIGHLIGHT]]And this is on a Tuesday night with only two other people inside the restaurant, so literally this place was empty![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (Not sure if the Cook made me wait for this dish out of spite for me sending back the first entree but that is my suspicion). Anyway, I got my server's attention and she told me if I could wait a few more minutes because they were plating my dish and that it will be out shortly. And that literally took another 10 minutes. To say that I was eager to get out of this place would be an understatement. I was standing up literally putting on my jacket when the dish finally reached my table. My server asked me kindly to return to my seat and to try her recommended entrée. So I gave her the benefit of the doubt and I did so. The Skewered Chicken entrée was a little better than the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, but really nothing to write home about. What a letdown! I really wanted to give this restaurant one star, but my server really showed genuine concern about my dining experience. And I truly appreciated that. And so as for my take on Le Souk of Montclair NJ. I would caution spending your hard earned money at this restaurant. The food is mediocre at best and there are a lot of better options in the Montclair area for Mediterranean food.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We were drawn in by the colorful and cozy atmosphere, and wow--we are so glad we happened to find this place![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The mint tea was refreshing, and everything we tried was so fresh and perfectly balanced. I ordered the special brunch and was stunned by how much food was on the platter. My husband enjoyed the combination of pomegranate seeds with the beef shawarma; there was ample pita bread included. This was one of the best Mediterranean meals we've ever had, and we look forward to coming back when we are in the area!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]A unique hidden gem in a bustling area of Montclair. It is small and cozy and easy to miss but definitely worth the dining experience ![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day and we were pleasantly surprised! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It wasn't overly crowded and we loved that there was no price fixed menu / extra charge ![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered Muhammara dip with pita to start and falafel. Both were fresh and delicious . For main course we had the beef shawarma and chicken kabob . It was wonderful, seasoned well , and even the salad was fresh . We also tried their house hot tea which took a while to make but it was flavorful and delicious ! The price is very reasonable, you can tell they make everything fresh and it is authentic . The menu has a lot of gluten free and vegan options which we both loved ! [[HIGHLIGHT]]They play nice music and the vibe is relaxed .[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server was sweet and even let us change our spot to a more comfortable couch like setting . They are very accommodating and friendly and the food is delicious ! I highly recommend for anyone trying / craving Mediterranean food !

Yes I do, I do recommend this place. The energy in Le Souk is amazingly positive, and the middle eastern decor is fantastic. Hummus: best we've ever tasted. "Monk" Baba Ghanoush: fresh, smoky and brilliant Falafel Sandwich: baked, sauced and seasoned perfectly If you don't know that NJ is the USA's middle eastern cuisine capital, now you know.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]One star for cozy decor and another for friendly service[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], but unfortunately food fell short and didn't deliver. For appetizer we had beet salad, portion was microscopical and it lacked flavor. For main dish we ordered falafel waffle, which didn't look like waffle rather like ordinary falafel balls. It had stale taste, like made from frozen package and not freshly made. Our overall our experience with Le Souk was very disappointing.

This place has amazing middle eastern food, and I highly recommend it! Everything I tried was so fresh and delicious, and the owners are the friendliest people. The monk baba ganoush with pita bread was really refreshing and the green peppers added a nice crunch. My friend and I tried the pomegranate chicken and homemade beef shawarma, both were super flavorful, and the hummus served with each dish was also really good. For dessert we got baklava, which was also amazing and not super sweet either. There's outdoor and indoor seating available, and the decor is really cute. You can definitely count on great service too.

I have been passing this place for years and never noticed this delicious gem! Small but an absolutely one of a kind Mediterranean cafe! They have a great variety of menu options, drinks/teas and even authentic handcrafted bags for purchase. We tried a bunch of appetizers, Baba Ganoush, Stuffed Grape Leaves, traditional Hummus and Falafel! For the entree, we got a Chicken Kabob (which was definitely a great portion for two people). We also got Moroccan Hot Tea, which was so refreshing! This will be my go to local spot moving forward! Must try!!

Tiny place with really cute decor. Super friendly service and great menu. Had four appetizers (Mezza) for $20 which was a great and very affordable way to taste a selection of the dishes.For main courses we had vegetarian moussaka, eggplant and beef (fetteh) , chicken pomegranate and another beef dish, (shawarma) Everyone loved their meal. Nice, generous sizedportions (but not enough for leftovers/takeout which was fine!!) They seemed a little unprepared for any sort of crowd on a Saturday night but it was fine because you weren't in a hurry. Only complaint was that it was super quiet when we came in at seven pm-- almost felt like we were intruding. Music came on only after we requested it -/was a wonderful addition to add to the ambience. Music should be on all the time! BYO but they don't have ice buckets so come prepared. Free parking after 7pm. Will come back!

Oh. My. Goodness. I ordered take out from le souk and cannot wait to dine in person. The food is so fresh and full of flavor. I loved every single bite. They even included a little dessert with our order which was also delicious. I can't wait to go back.

I was craving something filling and fresh that wouldn't leave me feeling sluggish and I'm so glad that I came here!! The interior vibe is so nice and the falafel waffles were great!! I appreciated their packaging for to-go items and the service was excellent. It was easy to order my food over the phone and it was ready super fast. Would definitely be returning! Helpful tip: If you are using your GPS to get there, it's right on the corner (on a diagonal entrance). The GPS made me think it was on the block.

Le Souk became our favorite middle eastern restaurant after auditioning several in the Montclair area. From the Chicken Platter to their sandwiches, everything was tasty and filling! Pomegranate chicken platter was full of flavor, and wide variety of sides. And my wife loved their chicken shawarma platter - they even substituted the rice with some of that yummy hummus. All in all, best place for middle eastern food with outdoor seating and indoor ambience. read more

This is a charming gift shop that has become a wonderful cafe. Try the chicken with pomegranate and the homemade hummus. We had never tried Syrian food before and now we are hooked. We also bought some unique coffee cups for us and some beautiful decorated glasses as a gift for a friend. The cups are meant for tea but perfect for an aperitif as well. We are so glad we discovered this gem right in our neighborhood! read more

Always passed by this place for a few years now wanting to try it. We have two very young children and it just didn't seem like it would go will over there. However, today we decided to order in and try Le Souk. Baba Ganoush (the best I've ever had, so much flavor and smoke and not too heavy on the pasty tahini) Hummus, a few sandwiches, a salad, and dessert. Fantastic! My kids loved it too. Everything was carefully packed and perfect. You can tell by the attention to detail that this restaurant does it right. Great job! So glad I finally tried it. The baba ganoush alone won me. read more

Le Souk is a wonderful addition to the Montclair restaurant scene. We have only been there a few times, but it is so good. The Pomegranate Chicken is excellent. The Muhamarra and Baba Ganoush are the best I've ever had. Inside is beautifully decorated, but outside is remarkably calm (for being by a road) and nice. The food is fresh, service is good. We had a family gathering for twenty people at Le Souk. The food was healthy and delicious, especially the freekah and meat dish! I also had the best babaganoush I've ever had there. They were also able to accommodate our families request for Halal chicken/beef. The space is cozy and the restaurant was very accommodating. Be sure to try the pomegranate tea and baklava as well. Jumana is a wonderful and generous chef. The traditional Syrian food is delicious and not something you would typically try. The food is packed with many flavors and looks even more beautiful than the restaurant itself, which is saying a lot. I recommend that you let Jumana cook you whatever she wants...you will not be disappointed!! read more

So I've been here a few times. There was this awesome guy who worked there that had a special touch with the tea/food. The tea was amazing and the service was always excellent. Then one day, he was not there anymore. I went back and the tea and food just didn't have the same taste. Everything was different. We came to eat at Le Souk a couple of weeks ago and LOVED the food. My husband is Syrian and we met in Syria so we were eager to give this place a try. The inside is small and the decor give this place a very homey feel. The food the owner, Joumana, prepared was fantastic. Try the Babaganoush and the pomegranate chicken was my absolute favorite. We will definitely be back to try more of Joumana's cooking. read more

Lunch is lovely here - mediterranean tapas in a small cozy location that's decorated like a market ('souk'). Beet salad with labneh, sauteed dandelion greens, homemade hummous and pita, it was all delicious and reasonably priced. The proprietor can do dinner to special order, so we came back a few days later and had a fixed-price dinner (BYOB). The food was fresh and plentiful and other than one other party, it was like having a private dinner. Give this a try - its the Syrian Mom you wish you had cooking for you all along! read more

The staff was very nice, the atmosphere was fun. The labneh and baklava were lovely. The rest was mediocre. The falafel waffle was okay but needed more sauce. The eggplant fatteh was bland and lukewarm but it was served after my son had almost finished his dish (I think they forgot to serve it.) Perhaps they haven't recovered from the pandemic problems? read more

Wow, what an experience. Every dish made from scratch by the warm hearted owner, and you can tell. Then her son played traditional middle eastern music table side. It was a beautiful experience. We were whisked away to another part of the world...but we never even had to get on a plane. read more

We just discovered this little place in Watchung Plaza. Great food and the take out order was pretty quick. We had the pomegranate chicken and the chicken kebabs, both very tasty. What a charming and wonderful cafe/market! Jumana is a superb cook, making the most delicious Mediterranean/Syrian items. My daughter and I had lunch on her birthday, and were wowed-we couldn't have been happier. Babaganouj, beet salad, spinach feta pastries, eggplant sandwich (not your grandmother's sandwich!) and more all were superbly made and elegantly served. Love the artistic decor, the market atmosphere and the warm welcome from Jumana and Yazar. Check out their live music and entertainment schedule... this is a very special find on Watchung Plaza. We tried the Antakya Hummus (Pine nuts, cucumber pickles, tomatoes, brown chili butter) and will be adding this to our list of favorite appetizers... So very good! The sea bass my wife and SIL were again, beautifully prepared and delicious as always, as were my lamb chops (Kuzu). While the lamb hummus was excellent, the miso calamari was.... not as tasty as I remember it. Different chef, different day... won't keep us from coming back soon.
