For our last proper meal in Montreal, we decided to have breakfast at Régine Café. This was…read moresomewhat impromptu, as I did not read up on this place in preparation for my trip - instead, I did some quick research the night before and found that it consistently ranked as one of the best breakfast/brunch spots in the city. That being said, I booked a table and we made our way over. Régine is apparently a popular spot - indicated by the rope they had set up outside which suggested that a line can form. Since we booked a table, and it was a Monday morning, there was no line and we were seated right away. The restaurant is broken up into two main dining areas with large windows that let in a lot of light. The decor was tasteful but not my style - it definitely gave off that afternoon tea feel with upscale accents and an overly feminine aesthetic. It was nice but just not my taste. The menu has a really good variety of breakfast and lunch items - I was taken aback by how many creative dishes there were, not just standard breakfast items. I needed caffeine, so I started with a cappuccino which was really good, one of the better ones I've had. For my actual breakfast I went with the Chic Croissant; this was essentially a breakfast sandwich with pulled ham, egg, arugula, and an aioli. Due to the fragility of the croissant, I did not eat it as a sandwich - but despite that the dish was delicious. Everything tasted super fresh and all the flavors worked really well together. I don't think I ever had pulled ham before, but felt it was super creative and elevated the sandwich. We wanted to try some of their bakes, so we also got the cinnamon roll and the scone. We were given the option to have the cinnamon roll covered in frosting but we opted to have it plain. Even without the frosting, the roll was excellent - I usually find cinnamon rolls to be dry, but this was super m-o-i-s-t with a generous filling of raisins and cinnamon; it was one of the best I've had. The scone was lavender and white chocolate; I don't usually like lavender but this was pretty good and not overly heavy. It came with sides of macerated strawberries and mascarpone which I don't think were needed but nice to have. Service was great - everyone was warm, friendly, and efficient. Overall, Régine Café exceeded my expectations - the food was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to return for another meal. I understand why this is one of the more popular spots for breakfast and brunch in Montreal.

I was traveling with my brother who had been to the city before, and recommended Le Vieux Vélo for a late breakfast since he had tried it before and had a good meal. That being said, we hit the ground running and made our way over. LVV is primarily a breakfast spot; while they have a decent selection of items, they specialize in Benedicts and have several varieties to choose from. The dining area is split into two areas with subtle yet tastefully done decor. It can get a little tight, but it wasn't busy when we were there so space was not an issue. I normally don't gravitate towards Benedicts, but I couldn't resist since I was here. Even though the different flavor combos looked tempting, I went basic and chose the classic. I was, however, given my choice of meat so I chose ham. The benny was good - everything tasted fresh and the hollandaise wasn't too rich which is generally a concern of mine. Roasted potatoes and some greens were served on the side which complemented the eggs well. Service was good, we were taken care of promptly and everyone was friendly. Overall, I had a good experience at Le Vieux Vélo - it was a great start to my time in Montreal and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Or so I thought. Next stop: Maman in Griffintown. Mom already knew Maman because apparently they have one back home on the Upper East Side. Yet somehow, despite living on the Upper East Side myself, I have never been taken there. Interesting. We will address this upon our return to New York. The Griffintown location has a really nice outdoor seating area running alongside the building, with blue café tables, big wooden pergolas and planters. Under normal circumstances, this would have been perfect for me. Unfortunately, it was raining. The staff very kindly told Mom and Dad that I could come inside as long as I remained in my carrier. Terms accepted. After an entire morning of adventuring, I had absolutely no objection to being carried around like important cargo. Mom ordered eggs Benedict and an iced latte. Dad went with scrambled eggs, bacon and toast plus a Diet Coke. I stayed tucked inside my carrier and monitored the bacon situation. Very closely. No further comment at this time. The humans declared brunch a success, and I appreciated having a warm, dry place to recover after my morning excursion instead of sitting outside contemplating my life choices in the rain.
