The bar is first come, first served, so if you forget to book ahead, it's definitely worth trying your luck. You can still order anything from the full menu. Wow brunch here was amazing. It was a little pricey but the portions were very good. I got to try the lamb grilled cheese and the bone marrow plate. The lamb grilled cheese was not what I was expecting when you say grilled cheese but I was happily surprised since it was a hearty sandwich with braised lamb. The soup of the day was rich and creamy and overall tasty. The bone marrow plate was also very generous. Ngl, there was a lot going on there but flavors were pretty good with the bread and bone marrow itself. This, I was seated right away. See pictures for recommendations. Especially recommend the bone marrow dish as it is not available at most places, hence, somewhat rare to find. Our waitress was very friendly and provided great service. One minor complaint which is probably a mismanagement or oversight by the restaurant itself is that we did not get our side order of French Toast despite ordering it the same time as the other dishes. Foie Gras for breakfast? Fancy! But, I am on vacation in French Canada, so why the heck not?! The foie gras itself is amazing! It is cooked to tender perfection and every single bite is exploding with flavor! I have no idea what kind of magic the kitchen is using but I am SO here for it! Where it comes to the accompaniments, these were a little hit or miss. Hit: * The onion jam added a wonderful sweetness to the overall dish. * The egg was of excellent quality (though to be fair, the egg white was a little too firm for my taste). * The prosciutto chips work great in adding crispness and salt. * Arugula Sprouts were a nice touch in adding some freshness. Miss: * The sheer amount of bread feels very excessive. I would estimate there are 6 slices worth here. * Turnips (or, rather 'the starch component') could have been more tender and could have used some seasoning * Sauce and poppy look pretty, but their flavors get lost somewhere along the way. Ordinarily, I would say CAD 41 is a little steep for breakfast, but high quality foie gras is a very expensive ingredient. Le Passé Composé does a terrific job allowing it to shine on its own. I had one of the most indulgent breakfasts at Le Passé Composé in The Gay Village of Montreal. Eating brunch here means you must get the 2 Oeufs Pochés Foie Gras / 2 Foie Gras Poached Eggs. This dish comes with two thick slices of brioche bread, each topped with prosciutto, onion jam, poached goose eggs, foie gras, poppy seeds, and arugula sprouts. I have never seen or eaten anything like this dish for brunch. Delicious, rich, and so satisfying. I mentioned my breakfast to a local, and she agreed that Le Passé Composé is a well-known breakfast spot and that the foie gras with poached eggs is a local favorite. Food was good service was bad. We never received any water after sitting for an hour. The server took our order and never checked on us once. Didn't ask me if I wanted another drink, if our food was okay, and had to ask for water once we got the bill. I had to go up to the bar to ask for the bill. My bf tipped 15% because the service was bad. The server then told us "are you okay with me having to pay 3% to serve you?" because apparently if it's not 18% he has to pay to work? But he only said that AFTER we tipped on a card. I could tell he tried to shame us, but like provide better service? Mind you, he had to walk past us 5 times to serve the table behind us. So we could have had water, could have ordered an extra drink, etc. Also two black men walked in and sat at the bar. He asked them to move down to the back of the restaurant so that other customers could see that the bar was open (but the rest of the seats were clearly open?). My bf is Bengali /brown, so I can't help but think that race may have played a role in our service. However the table behind us was Asian, fair skin, so I cannot be for sure. The food also took about 45 min to come out. Which, I wouldn't have even mentioned had we been checked on even once. Either way it was bad service and he tried to guilt us for only tipping 15%. But we were never checked on, never getting a water, and having to flag him down for the bill. We normally tip 20-25%. read more

Our friends who got married in Montreal said we had had to eat here while we were visiting. Fearing the wrath of my intimidating friends, I said "of course" and immediately made a reservation. We took the metro over from our hotel and even though were were early, we were seated immediately at a table up front. We had a great view of the bar, restaurant as well as the world going by on the street. The only drawback that it was a bit warm in the restaurant and the table was picnic style which was less comfortable than chairs would be. Normally, we wouldn't have noticed but we'd been walking all over Montreal for the past couple of days so we were all a little stiff and sore! In any event, service was lovely and the food was almost a work of art. I had the Key Lime Pie Crumble. At $27 CAD, it's not cheap but honestly, I could have shared it and still been full when I left. According to the menu, it contains maple and lime yogurt, crumble, blue berries and blackberries, Italian meringue flambé, lemon and lime cream and pistachios. Additionally, you get a thin slice of baguette with vanilla and lime ricotta. And on top of that, it's served with a mango and lime smoothie that looks like it has poppy seeds in it. It was beautiful to look at and even more delicious to eat but it was so filling, I could only eat about half of it. The smoothie they served with it could have been a meal by itself as it was very thick and rich. The blueberries were the sweetest I've ever had. Sometimes fresh blueberries are a little tart and only once you bake them do they release their full sweetness but these were super fresh and super sweet. I also had a Quebec vanilla coffee which was amazing. All of the portions were fairly large and shareable. We knew some of the portions were too big so we cut them in half immediately and boxed them up to go. The prices seemed a little steep for brunch but the food was definitely amazing and the service was very friendly. I let my friends who recommended the place know that it was one of the highlights of our time in Montreal. Definitely make reservations...we were able to make them about a week in advance with no issues but we did see people come in without them and they didn't have any tables right away. read more

This rustic restaurant was an absolute privilege to visit even though we needed to book reservations because of how crowded it was it was worth that extra preparation. The staff were really polite and they seated us promptly and even gave us choices for where to sit. The waitress was also very helpful and recommending certain dishes over others. There were so many items on the menu that I really wanted to try and we opted for the bone marrow toast ($50) and a grilled cheese sandwich ($35). Both dishes were extremely flavourful and creamy they both had hints of mushroom in their creamy sauce and also a bit of escargot. The flavour profiles for each of these dishes were really similar but it was so good I did not mind having double the amount of the same flavour. The grilled cheese sandwich came with either a soup of the day which was tomato soup or some fries I ordered the soup and it was delicious nice and acidic not too sour not too sweet I really great fresh tomato taste to it. I came to Le Passé Composé for lunch a while ago and tried their 2 Foie Gras Poached Eggs Benedict. The atmosphere was chill and relaxing and the server was quite friendly. The benedict was really good in terms of flavour, texture, overall food ratio/balance, nicely poached eggs, and good turnip/potato. Trying Foie Gras for the first time was interesting as well and the foie gras complimented the food. Have you ever been to a great breakfast place on the most egg-benny-craving day with a group of 16 people waiting together for 45 minutes before the restaurant opens? If your answer is no, let me tell you, that's what I did and we all rushed in like a Black Friday morning at Bestbuy or a weekday morning commuting hour at the local train station. Anyway, we tried out Salmon Egg Benny and the most evil, most cholesterol enriched, thick-cut foie gras on poached eggs. Take a look with my photos, please. Those hot dripping hollandaise sauce with good amount of poppy seed just infused to the eggs with no regrets. Those thick cut bread ain't ordinary bread but brioche. Lightly toasted, so eggy, so thick cut. Comes with a hint of sweetness. Super carb-ieeee. Soak up all the foie gras essence and egg yoke in the middle of the plate like a mop. The finished plate was even cleaner than my car windshield after having a power wash. Time to take a double-dosed of Crestor + Lipitor. So good, so satisfying, so great of a breakfast. Finished off with a good pot of green tea to ramp down the sin of LDL cholesterol together with some great enjoyable moments with friends and families. Nice servers btw. I really like the way they tried to explain the menu to us with good effort, even though they do not speak very fluent English. Much appreciated! Recommended. UNBELIEVABLE! This was simply the single best brunch of my life! I had high hopes but wasn't prepared for the delicious decadence of the food we were served. It's hard not to gush! We had reservations / otherwise there can be a bit of a wait, especially early Sunday afternoon. I had the signature Foie Gras on brioche with eggs and prosciutto and MAN WAS IT INCREDIBLE! They could cut the brioche serving in half and this would still be a hit - two large portions of foie gras that was seared outside and perfect delicious juiciness inside. Hubby had a Key Lime Pie Crumble - maple and lime yogurt with crumble and berries with a "meringue flambé" and a citrus cream and pistachios on top. This was our first stop in Montreal and I can't say more good things about Le Passé Compose! We stopped in at 1:30pm right from the airport. Our server was very nice and checked on us the right amount. We came with luggage (there was 6 of us) and nobody batted an eye when we threw it in the corner before our meal. I should also mention we had a reservation. I ordered the 2 Rural Poached Eggs. It was delicious and HUGE!! The goose poached eggs were cooked perfectly and had the best runny yolks, which combined nicely with the pulled pork and mushrooms. The pork was juicy and the mushrooms were delicious and well seasoned. The fingerling chips gave it a crunchy, salt bite which was nice; they weren't oily. This was a very well composed dish where every element added something special. HIGHLY recommend ordering this! Also note - it comes with 2 loaded pieces of toast. We arrived around 1 since our earlier plans didn't take as long as we thought, and they were able to squeeze us in a bit earlier at 1:30. He wasn't joking; almost every poached egg dish coming out of the kitchen was the foie gras, so clearly that's the winner here. To make it vegetarian, I asked for the pulled pork on the side. I also ordered some pan seared foie gras for $14. My friend and I each ate one poached egg. I tried it first without the pork or foie gras, and I personally found it a bit bland with just the mushrooms and the mushroom sauce. The pulled pork gives it a lot of flavor. It's hard to say which one I liked better, but I think the boar wins it by a tiny margin with slightly richer flavours. Pretty good value for how much you get - we were all very full afterwards. I haven't the slightest idea what the story behind the naming is, but its a clever one! Although it makes for a cool name, It also brings me back to the pains of French grammar class. Aaaah...grimmer school, to be young and carefree again. Sorry, drifting. Back to the review! Stopped by around lunch time, and as expected, this place gets quite busy. There are quite a few options, including a fois gras Benedict. I've actually never had fois gras, so there is no doubt what I'm going for. There's been a bit of controversy surrounding the French delicacy. Not only is it becoming increasingly difficult to find it on a menu in the States, but the NYC fois gras ban is actually days from taking affect. The presentation of the Benedict is a work of art, magazine worthy. A brioche topped with a poached egg, pancetta, caramelized onions, and of course fois gras. Even the side of fruit was beautifully plated. Decadent is the only word I can use to describe this dish. As far as brunch goes, this is pretty much your gold standard. With that being said, not sure I'm a fan of fois gras. Also had the apple beignets. As beautiful as the presentation was, technically speaking I was not in love with this. The texture of the apple would have benefited from being sautéed until completely soft. The batter also came across as more fritter than beignet. Hey, you can't win them all. As far as presentation, Passé compose is absolutely spectacular, down right over the top! Am I now part of the brunch faithful? Probably not. A rare miss in Montreal for us. Everything we had for brunch was just a bit too rich and heavy without the flavor/texture to make up for it. The elevated benedict was well presented, but didn't do much for taste. French toast, dry and bland. Service was nice enough. read more
