Stopped by Olive + Gourmando after strolling Old Montreal. The restaurant has a nice cozy atmosphere with some character with their decor and layout. The restaurant didn't provide a high chair for our baby, which was a bit disappointing. The service was good with our waitress checking with us to order and being prompt and attentive. Here is what we ordered: Grilled Cheese O+G (8/10) - the bread with the grilled cheese and caramelized onions were cooked well. The homemade ketchup had a sweet taste to it and was brought out a little colder than room temperature. I probably would have preferred the ketchup/tomato sauce to be a bit warmer. The Chicken Melt (8/10) - this sandwich was pretty big. It had grilled chicken in a creamy sauce, some Cole slaw (actually a lot of Cole slaw) and some dill pickles. The sandwich was a bit messy to eat and I think it had a little too much Cole slaw, but it was a good sandwich, nonetheless. And not great if you have kids under 2. We had our baby and they didn't provide high chairs. They have a kids menu, but didn't seem too kid friendly. I recommend for couples with no kids. It was very busy when we arrived, but we were told it would only be a 10 minute wait. We sat outside on a bench, and waited to be called. I admired the ambiance as we were shown to our table. It was full, and noisy, but so much that we couldn't talk to each other. Bonus points for whoever designed the sound system that played 80s music during our visit. Enough speakers to fill the room with sound, and the system didn't need to played loud to be enjoyed. Coffee was superb. Just the right strength, with lovely notes of chocolate. I had the chicken melt, which was incredible. Real chicken pieces, sauce with a touch of heat, and toppings with just the right amount of savoury. Her panini was equally good. It's a really nice boutique restaurant. We went for breakfast and it was packed! It's a small space, so there has been a wait each time we've been. It's not long and normally has been 20-40 minutes. The Ambiance was casual but hipster/trendy, and the service was very friendly and made the experience memorable. There was no line when we got there since we were early, but as soon as we got to place our orders, there was already a group of people waiting outside to be seated. The restaurant was full then. The host showed us to our table, we chose to sit by the window facing the morning sun. He warned us that many do not like sitting there as it was too hot, we didn't mind cos it's the morning sun and we get to look out onto the road, if not for our window, I wouldn't be able to warn you to come here early to score a seat. The hubby and I visited Montreal for 4 days and ate at Olive + Gourmando twice which is not something we typically do in a city we're visiting for the first time. It was so delicious, about half a mile from where we were staying so a nice little walk, and had exceptional service. Their coffee drinks were superb with my favorite being the petite mocha. The food was quite good as well with the sweet ricotta being my husband's favorite. It was whipped ricotta with honey, orange marmalade served with soft toasted brioche. My favorite bites were the sconewich because the biscuit might've been the best I've tasted in a couple of years. The butter was thick, biscuit was perfectly salted, cheese was nutty and sharp, ham was thin and salty, paired perfectly with a peach jam. I also loved the granola bowl with the thick yogurt, roasted cinnamon apples, sliced matchstick apples, and homemade granola. We also had the toast plate with different breads, butter, and peanut butter, a chocolate croissant, and a regular butter croissant. All were delicious and I'd go back again just for a mocha. As a millenial American, I was craving some fresh greens and vegan fare after a few days munching on frites and smoked meat sandwiches in the city on a recent trip, and Olive + Gourmand came in clutch. We stopped in fairly late close to closing time, which I hate, but were greeted with a smile that instantly made us feel at ease. Her grilled cheese and tomato soup were stellar, while my salmon Caesar, topped with crunchy fried capers and the most delectable salty dressing, was one of the best bites I had in the city. Unfortunately, I think if you show up later in the day like we did, then you miss out on a lot of their specialty pastries.
