Of all the spots we ate at during our 2 week Montreal stay, this was our least favorite. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It like a nicely decorated Denny's, so we probably should've stuck with breakfast, but we stopped by for dinner and were seated right away.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered a Poutine and calamari for appetizers; calamari was ok had a subtle kick to it 5/10 Poutine was actually pretty good, the cheese curds were perfectly melted, fries were crisp not soggy, we all enjoyed it 9/10 For dinner, we ordered: -A margarita pizza: too cheesy and wasn't really a margarita, no tomatoes, flavor was off, more than half of it was left on the plate. 1/10 -chicken avocado club sandwich, bland, slightly soggy and unappetizing, had a 1/4 and left the rest since no one wanted to try it 1/10 -Veal marsala: recommend by the waiter, it was good, but came with a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce as a filler which had no business being on the same plate, clash of flavors. 6/10 -Universal burger; dry, overcooked. There's a regulation to have beef cooked at 160 in Montreal, so even if you order it medium, they'll serve it well. Wish the waiter expressed that when we ordered. My son offered the rest of it to us which speaks volumes to how little he liked it. 2/10 Portions were large and generous. Overall we wouldn't go back and definitely not for dinner, if you're considering it, maybe stick with breakfast, but I'd stay skip the items we ordered, except for the Poutine The server was friendly and on it, the 2 stars were for the service and Poutine. read more

They offer a full bar but cannot deviate from their recipes. The waitress was nice but untrained and not competent. The burger came without promised fried onions, the drinks were in wrong proportions and they were not able to substitute romaine lettuce for my Greek salad. They were supposed to serve breakfast at all hours but we were unable to order breakfast items at 5:30. BTW we were the only table there at 5.40 pm and it took 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. I always wondered what kind of food they served at Universel, as I often walked by on Sainte-Catherine. To my surprise, it's a little fancier than I thought when I looked at the place from the outside. Very interesting menu diversity, you'll have the choice between Canadian, American and Italian food (and I think from even more places, but I don't remember). read more

My friends and I came here while on vacation with little research on this place but oh my was it good. I got a French toast combo with eggs fruit and home fries and I have to say the home fries were excellent. The French toast was very refreshing and light which made it great for a hot day as it was 90 Degrees out when we were here. Friendly and helpful waitress and support staff. Kitchen staff already prepared to make our sandwiches to go tomorrow morning for us. Plenty of seating even on a very busy Sunday morning. Was promptly seated around 9:40, lots of people but no wait which was nice . The menu is super extensive . I ordered the montreal benedict and it was good , fruit was okay , not cold and some wasn't ripe but the hot portion of the breakfast was amazing , potatoes so good - hollandaise sauce was yum. My group visited for brunch. Always one for pizza, I ordered their breakfast pizza with apples, maple syrup, cheese, and bacon. I can say it was one of the best tasting things I've put into my mouth. Pooh and I came here for breakfast after a wild St. Valentines Day celebration, last night. We both started off with double lattés and then we had the Mexican breakfast which included 2 burritos, home fries and we replaced the fruit with sliced tomatoes. A pretty standard brunch experience! The menu had lots of variety and the food was well-priced. I ordered the crepe, which was good albeit a bit bland. After trying some of the standard eggs/potato breakfasts of my friends, I will order those in the future! I called ahead for a reservation, but this was not necessary as the location wasn't busy and had no trouble accommodating a large group. There's loads of indoor and outdoor space -- although Peel is all construction right now, so the St. Catherine's location will be best for outdoor eating! If you order mimosas, note that they come pre-mixed and are essentially a $45 pitcher of orange juice. Staff were kind, helpful, and easy to find. read more

This restaurant is so close to the Best Western at Peel and Sherbrooke that we ended up eating here three times during our four night, three day stay. Breakfast combos are plentiful and gave us leftovers to snack on during the day between two adult meals and a kids meal with the baby eating whatever he wanted to try off our plates. Food was good (stuffed ravioli with chorizo and cream sauce was amazing), service was particularly excellent during the one dinner time (July 22), and 2/3 times, we used the adjacent office building lobby for our baby to run around. At our one breakfast, one family stored a large stroller behind our table with ample room to get around it, and at the other breakfast, the gentleman seating us expertly solved our booth/table desire dilemma (so we could secure our own booster seat to the chair but let our older son be comfortable), with a half booth/table, so this is a GREAT place for families. The only thing is that I didn't use the bathrooms so I can't vouch for a change table. read more

Wanted a quick and nearby stop for brunch during my Montreal trip. We were seated promptly and the restaurant was very clean and spacious. I appreciated the distancing they had between customers as cases were climbing back up again. Extensive menu with the breakfast and lunch classics. Only ordered eggs benedict and it came with fruit and breakfast potatoes. There was a little too much vinegar added into the eggs benedict for my liking. What a find! Busy spot in the heart of downtown Montreal. Quite a menu with loads of selection, food was delicious and the service was excellent. I had a latte in a bowl (double shot of espresso) and the oatmeal with fruit. My daughter had the strawberry and custard crepes and loved every bite. We will definitely return. read more

I didn't care much for the bread used for the benedict but since there was so much food, I ended up eating mainly just the salmon and egg. Potatoes and fruits came with the benedict-- the fruit was fresh and the potatoes were delicious. The fruit platter was good too. Large plate with a great variety of fruits. They were sweeter and smaller than what I'm used to, so probably organic. Plus, the strawberries were all a deep red; not overly large and white (You'll only know wth I'm talking about if you're from the states and eat the non-organic crap) The side of bacon was weak; flimsy thin cut slices. We stopped here for breakfast since it is wheelchair accessible. They have tons of breakfast options, espresso drinks , and cocktails available. I ordered the poached eggs with guacamole off the healthy section of the menu. It was served with a healthy portion of fruit and cottage cheese. Everything was good, but the guacamole did not seem very fresh. I would not order it again. My friend ordered the combination eggs Benedict which she said was very good. If I could go back to this place I totally would in a heart beat. The food is so amazing and well cooked that I never even got a chance to take a picture of it. The plates are a great size for the price you pay. I am also very pleased with the atmosphere of the place, very clean, professional and beautifully decorated.
