I went with my friend who owned a regular bakery for 10 years, she humored me as I have the dietary allergies. Even she said the croissants were extremely good, she couldn't tell that they were gluten and dairy free. If that isn't a stamp of approval, I don't know what is. Having just visited Montreal for the first time, my experiences at Le Marquis stand out as definite highlights. I am gluten free and my partner is not; he was quite reluctant to order at this cafe but acquiesced. I tried their savory crepes which were beyond delicious (spinach, egg and cheese, and turkey, egg and cheese); such amazing flavor and texture; I could not tell it was gluten-free. He had an omelet on a croissant, and he loved it! He raved about it so much, impressed that something gluten free could be so tasty, and even asked to return twice more for breakfast during our stay (which we did). They also displayed several items in a freezer case, which I took advantage of and bought a large amount to bring home; croissants, both plain and chocolate, waffles, and blueberry muffins. Sabeur served us on our first and second visits with much charm and humor, convincing my partner it was safe to eat there, guaranteeing he would enjoy it. Many thanks to Sabeur for easing him into the experience and making it even more pleasurable. It was such a relief to find a gluten free cafe where the food actually tasted "normal", or I would say, even more delicious than "normal". As others have said, EVERYTHING in the cafe is gluten free, so no stress, worries or effort trying to read labels and determine what is safe to eat. All in all a wonderful find! Even at home I have not found gluten free crepes or croissants; I wish they had a website you could order from and have items shipped!! I would definitely be a frequent customer. The only other suggestion I have would be to warm up the ambience a bit with some design and decor; the space is somewhat utilitarian and bare bones. The Croissants here are worth 5 Stars (or more) - they are hands down THE BEST Gluten Free Croissants I have ever had. My partner who is not GF could not even tell they were GF! We got there on a Wednesday shortly after opening and were told that the oven was broken so croissants from another location were being brought over and it would be ~30 mins, this ended up taking over 1.5 hours. During our wait the staff were super nice and brought us coffee and a small slice of GF cake for the inconvenience. Once the croissants arrived, hand delivered by the owner, he was super friendly and talked to us about the croissants and how hard it was to make a good GF version. He even let me try a small new flavor test croissant! I had the almond croissant which was full of amazing flavor. The next day we went back (since it was that good) and I had the chocolate croissant which was good, but really not as good as the almond - this croissant I still think about. The storefront is a normal modern bakery, but what really makes the atmosphere here was the staff member who was working both days we went - he was SUPER positive, friendly, and outgoing chatting with each patron individually asking who was GF, how long they had been GF, etc. The other thing that makes this place great is the energy in the store from the guests as folks would come in and exclaim "I have not had a GF croissant in 20 years!" or things like "it has been a decade since I had a pastry due to being GF!" and this happiness brought so many good vibes to the space. Overall, I wish I lived in Montreal so I could eat these croissants all the time - they truly are amazing and something I still think about! If you are in town and gluten free PLEASE visit! OMG! Workout hard before you come here, VERY HARD! Thank goodness I don't live anywhere nearby. They have the most unique selection of gluten-free baked goods I've ever seen. I saw bagels multiple types of croissant, eclairs, tarts, etc. Sampled a few items while I was in the area for almost a week. The blueberry eclair was delicious. I enjoyed the bagels, since knowing that making a little over a dozen edible gluten-free bagels takes me about 5 hours in the kitchen. However when I went back the last day in town wanting to take some home I learned that they don't make them and they are delivered from somewhere else. I ended up having the grab some out of the freezer which were not nearly as good as the ones that I had purchased fresh several days prior. read more

So so happy to have found this place!!!!! It has been 10+ years since I have had a true French pastry! I used to be a pastry Chef and had to leave my beloved industry as my gluten allergies made it impossible to work or eat anything with gluten. I was thrilled to come across this gem of a shop! Firstly, it is beautiful and very clean. There was a really great selection and I went a little nuts. I ordered about $53 worth of pastries and desserts and ran away with them in a gleeful gluten free haze of pure joy. I stayed long enough to have a lovely London fog tea with half a croissant and an almondine. Both were yum but the almond croissant was boomtastic! Flaky, tasty, rich, tasty goodness. I will be buying more of those ASAP. I got éclairs in 3 flavs, pate à chou was on point but I did not like the blueberry or raspberry-loved the chocolate one. I will say, I believe this is more of an I dislike pastry cream thing so I am not the best judge of smooshy pastry inards. I found the raspberry had stronger and better flavour than the blueberry, which was bland and underwhelming. Chocolate was smooth and ever so pleasant. Dessert was a choco noisette tart and mousse-both rich, decadent and divine! Had a lemon meringue tart and behold!!!! It was a true French lemon curd with that delightful pate sucrée she'll I adore. My son ate almost all of it with us fighting for the last rod bits of lemony sweetness. He loved the chocolatines I am more of an almond croissant fan. The only thing we found was that the croissant needed to be warmed a bit to bring back the fluffiness and it tasted more eggie than the chocolate or almond one. Still good but as I said, you want ze almond croissant in your life. I will go again and do some more savoury treats next time but this is a cocoa nib of gluten-free love! I was really excited to find this place prior to visiting Montreal. I found it on the gluten free app and read reviews. Sadly, on all 3 days (with 3 attempts on one of the days!)... only ONE time could I get a croissant. The place seems reallllly empty. Just left now after one final attempt to get one before I headed back to US, and they did have a chocolate Almond one (which just wasn't what I wanted) as well as some other sort of dessert in the glass, but they didn't have any sort of alternative milk (only regular dairy milk) in order to order matcha or coffee. Idk. Your experience may be different, but I was surprised that over a span of 6 days visiting Montreal and trying to continuously check this place out, it just looked empty (all the other shelves were also). Maybe it's more active in the summertime?? The croissant I did get on one of the days was very good though. Dense and chewy and moist. Loved it. Found our way to this super cute and delicious vegan pastry shop in the heart of Old Town Montreal. We met Brenda and she was so friendly! Great personality and was so fun to chat with. She spent the time sharing each of the items in the counter. She had some samples for us to try so we ended up with some of the eclairs and drinks. Delicious!
