While Selam does a great job styling hair, she is very unreliable and often does not show up for your appointment or runs super late. You will not receive an apology for her failure to show up. I made an appointment with her three weeks in advance and when I showed up she was no where to be found. The other stylists said she often forgets to show up to appointments in the DC salon. When I questioned about why she did not show, she blamed me for going to the wrong salon even though I had the text messages showing what had been agreed to. I have also experienced standing outside the salon for two hours because she was late opening and her assistants did not have the key. Two other friends have also stopped going to the salon due to Selam's lack of basic customer service and also experienced Selam being a no show. I would give zero stars if I could. read more

I got there at 945, awaited 10, nothing 1015 nothing 1030 nothing 1045 nothing, I finally left and went elsewhere. I called and left 2 times and left a voicemail. Once I called back around 11 to see what happened they started They never got my call or voicemails.......... I attended a spa party at Le chic salon. I saw the option for a Moroccan Hamman Bath which has been on my list to do when I go to Morocco. I was skeptic at first but went ahead and tried it out. Listen, I'm so glad I did it. I felt like I was a child again being bathed by my mother but in this case I was an adult being bathed by Nezha. I love her, she is the absolute best. How it all starts. I got undressed and entered a steamed room. I laid out on the table while she rubbed some sort of soap all over my body and the gloves she used were rough and helped with the removal of the dead skin. She then rinsed me and applied mud all over. She then rinsed me off. The whole process took about an hour. My skin felt so soft afterwards. Nezha was so sweet and personable. LOVE this place. My friend and I got a Groupon voucher for a massage& facial and it was the best experience ever! They were very accommodating to us too because of our tight schedules. My massages therapist was Jasmine, and she was soo awesome. Asked about my concerns, what pressure I wanted, and was just a great person to chat with. I got a 90 min massage, but the whole experience was very bizarre. You have to buzz to go upstairs next to the salon. I showed up about 10 mins early, there was no one at the reception desk. I waited for about 5-6 mins, then walked to the back since no one around. A nice lady from the back who seemed very confused asked me to change and sit in an Arabic themed room. I sat there for another 10-15 mins or so. The massage therapist finally came to take me back to the room. The massage itself was average. I booked a 90 min massage so she could work specifically on my lower back, she ended up doing a full body massage. She ended maybe 15-20 mins early. Don't recommend getting a massage here. read more

I have been coming to Selam for almost 4 years. I have natural hair. She does blowouts, sew-one, and natural hair styles. She has helped me to keep my hair healthy with steam treatments, and I have been able to achieve amazing blowouts with no heat damage. One star for a decently nice facility. I signed up for an hour massage and an hour facial. Neither lasted an hour, thankfully. The masseuse "massaged" areas that I had specifically indicated I did not want massaged. I'm not even sure what kind of massage she was attempting. The treatment consisted of her running her hands down my body and choosing an esoteric spot to hold down on. These spots included my armpits. It was not enjoyable, somewhat painful, and all together useless. As for the "facial". there was no steam machine but rather a wet washcloth put on my face. I think maybe a scrub and a mask were put on my face but I had no idea. There was no skin analysis and no extractions done. The rest of the time was spent "massaging" my body. The good reviews and the hair photos sold me on this salon so I made an appointment. I was late to my appointment because I got lost, but they were accommodating when they didn't need to be. Selam styled my hair and gave me some great tips for maintaining my style. 5 days later and my hair still looks like I just stepped out of the salon. There's a young guy in the salon who is good too. Definitely one of the best massages I've ever had, no exaggeration. Additionally, the spa itself is beautiful. Beware of poor customer service. The owner and staff are rude. The owner lied and said my hair was damaged. My hair was not/is not damaged. The truth is I was not combed out properly in the shampoo by her assistant in the shampoo bowl. The other staff member (blow dry tech) is rude and has made dismissive comments in the past. I had been going to this salon for a couple of years---weekly; however, whenever my daughters' would go (without me)...they reported being treated rudely and waiting for prolonged periods. One of my daughter's is in her 30s and the other is in high school. Salaam always did a fabulous job on my hair which is natural. I ignored many of the social cues---reported by them due to my schedule and Salaam's work on my hair. Recently, my youngest needed her hair fixed for prom and graduation. After my insistence, my daughter agreed to give LeChic another chance. We called in advance and informed of the importance of the occasion and reported she would be getting her tracks back in and inquired about cost. We were told when making the appt. that it cost $10 per track for plus the regular Shampoo/blow dry fee---altogether $85.00. We arrived at our appt time. After waiting for about 1 hour, the staff informed we would be next. She informed, (upon looking at what we had in my daughter's hand), a mistake had been made on the quote. Further, she informed that what we had was considered to be hair extensions which is a different price ($200). Since the price had been misquoted, it would be honored this time...but "warned that it would not be honored in the future!". At almost 60 yo, I was offended with the warning but was not interested in changing the mood of our occasion. Finally my daughter was being ushered to the shampoo bowl; therefore, I left to take care of errands because we were now two hours behind due to the waiting. Salaam, the owner, had made no contact with me for these two hours. Recently, I noticed that as much as I patronized this business, there did not appear to be any form of appreciation---on many occasions. My daughter was very anxious due to their repeated rudeness toward her and lack of positive energy. When I returned, Salaam was finishing, i.e. after being there approx. 4.5 hours later. Upon entering, the receptionist greeted me and asked me to pay. I, informed my wallet outside; therefore, I went back downstairs and returned. I looked at my daughter's hair and nothing appeared to have been done to address concerns I raised about them assisting with blending the color in the frontal/closure---as I requested and was prepared to pay for; however, you could feel the tension in the salon and all eyes were on me while that same staff abruptly asked for payment while salaam was still curling my daughter's hair. After all of the waiting/anticipation/anxiety, one of my daughter's most important event as about to be ruined---also, it was time to be at the prom send off-yet, we were still at the salon! Then, the receptionist and Salaam became belligerent---in front of other patrons and began verbalizing that I somehow knew that $85 was incorrect and the hairstyle is called "extensions" not "tracks". This encounter was extremely hostile and insulting. Somehow, this salon appears to be prejudicial to African American young people...in addition, a formal customer service lesson around how to treat the customer, the interconnection between business and your target population and the culture of the District of Columbia. They were blatantly rude and inconsiderate. More importantly, I spend more than $200 in one month with them---yet, my business as a customer was wiped out and belittled in a way that would be considered "elementary/foundations of marketing and quality assurance". I was hurt and extremely disappointed with their level of comfort in insulting us and causing a humiliating scene that was ruining one of the most important/memorable days in my daughter's life. Further, now her pictures/memories would also be tainted due to her appearance. Salaam verbalized in an angry tone that since I would not pay $200, then to leave and pay nothing---in spite of her staff informing the fee would be $85 and next time we were interested in getting her tracks again---it would cost $200. It is over one week and I'm still flabbergasted. More importantly, she was sooo late that Prom was half over by the time she arrived. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS PARAMOUND IN THE DC AREA---One day it will be your turn with your daughter---everyone gets a turn!!! Look out! I will never return, refer nor patronize LE CHIC SALON! read more

I am sad to write this review, but, on the off chance that some other person seeks out a massage/facial here, a warning is in order. The first time I came here last winter, I LOVED it. I had Devon for a massage/facial and it was incredible. One of the best of both I have ever gotten in my life, and I have paid way too much for fancy Georgetown spas. It was an actual dream it was so amazing. This time around, I called for an appointment and requested Devon. The person who took my appointment confirmed that I was scheduled with Devon. When I got there, however, my appointment was with someone named Toya. I figured there was a mistake and asked if could just reschedule and have my appointment with Devon as requested. She insisted she was just as good as Devon albeit "different". She said she was a licensed massage therapist. I didn't want to be difficult, so I decided to just go ahead. It was clear from the beginning that she did not know what was she was doing. She didn't ask me what area I wanted to concentrate on, or about any previous injuries, so I brought it up to her. After I told her about neck and shoulder tension, she commenced with lots of back rubbing and pressing really hard on various parts of my spine. It was unpleasant, but I figured she just need more direction. I mentioned my neck and shoulder trouble again, and that I would like to focus on that area. She then proceeded to use her ELBOWS to poke and kneed into my neck, never using her hands once. I have had lots of massages, some professional, some not, but the only person who ever tried to use their elbows to work at releasing a knot was my 10 year old brother. It was entirely unpleasant and painful, and I had to ask her to stop more than once. Was relieved when it was over. Next the facial. I had to remind her of the steam machine. When she got it she didn't not know how to use it. Once we figured out how to get it working, rather than steam my face before extraction, she just let it mist above our heads a little, never steaming my face, while she began extraction. At this point I was just so over the entire experience I didn't say anything. She had a cold towel from a bowl of water she kept rewetting it with, and used some sort of scrub that did not come off my face or air, so she had to scrub, HARD, to try and get it off my skin. She kept telling me to relax, but it was difficult as there was nothing relaxing about hte experience. I will say that she was very friendly and kind, which was why I had a hard time causing too much of a fuss. But if you can avoid the Toya experience, you should. Get the Groupon, request Devon, and then double, triple, quadruple check. You could have an incredible experience! read more

Selam has been doing my hair for years even when she was at the old Salon on 9th St with Lydia (who's awesome as well). She's super talented and fairly priced. A couple years back I died my hair red and then wanted to put in a curly textured weave. Selam was able to die my extensions to match my burgundy color and install the hair all for around $250 - since the process took around 6 hours total (dying my hair + extensions + full install) I was happy to pay for her time and effort. I got sooooo many compliments from the style and even my own friends were confused because the extensions blended so well. I love her new space and her receptionist always makes me a cup of Ethiopian 'red tea' while I'm getting a deep conditioner. Would definitely recommend. read more

I had a terrible experience here. My husband and I received a gift for a 60 min couples massage followed by 20 min in the steam room. It took us several times to book an appointment. The first time we had to call the day of to confirm to only have them tell us that they didn't have any openings. Once we did confirm our appointment (again us having to call to confirm with them instead of the other way around), we arrived 10 minutes early to our appointment which gave us enough time to fill out the necessary paperwork. Once we completed that, we waited another 10 minutes before anyone came to us to let us know what we should expect next. They told us that we will do the steam bath first followed by the massage. The steam bath was great; however, once we were done with our 20 min, no-one came to let us know what was to happen next. Instead we waited for 30 min in our massage room waiting for the masseuses to arrive. After having been there for an hour, our masseuses finally arrived. My husband and I get massages regularly and know what a certified professional massage therapist is. My husbands masseuse was clearly a professional; however, mine was not. It seemed that my masseuse was following what the other masseuse was doing. She would massage one side very differently from the other side. She would press on bones and joints (like my elbow and knee) which is not what a professional masseuse learns to avoid. Overall my experience was terrible and not relaxing at all. "Bait & Switch!!...Wkend massage-Groupon. Arrived early on Sunday "w/Appt". Was taken upstairs - and left to sit alone for 35 minutes! (There were no restrictions/no fine print). No one had come to get me or checked on me - then she ensued to ARGUE in front of hair clients for 5 minutes about paying/not confirming (I followed their requirements, called, made appt, showed up...& Groupons are already paid-for in the system -which she showed me!). There was NO-one there for my appt at noon on Sunday for me, yet she acted miffed & belittling to me. I left, no massage feeling belittled. She didn't even try calling to try and fix it. Ive have frequented this salon over the past 4 years, so I'm surprised I'm needing to write this review. I must also add that I usually do my own hair so if I go in it is maybe, at most, 3 times a year. So here it goes...I made an appointment to get the extensions I had in taken out as well as a semi permanent color (rinse). My best friend had been there a day prior and informed me that they were out of the color I wanted, so to call in to ensure that they will have it in time for my appointment. So I called to check. I was placed on hold briefly so that the receptionist could check, and she came back letting me know that they will definitely have it. Fast forward to the next day. I get to my appointment around 5 minutes early and am asked to have a seat. The stylist (Selam) comes over to me after around 15 minutes of waiting, letting me know that their color delivery truck did not come so they did not have the color rinse that I had asked for (ummm, okay? -_-). When I asked for my other options, she said that they had permanent dye in the color that I requested. I was scared about doing a permanent dye, so she gave me a minute to think about it. I decided to go for it. After around 15 more minutes of waiting, I was called over to get the extensions out. The lady who did it was very nice and patient (as this was my first time having extensions, so I was terrified of her potentially cutting my hair). She took her time and ensured that she would not cut my hair. The stylist (Selam) then called her away from me to wash another customer's hair. Their receptionist then came over to start taking down the braids in my hair. This is when the appointment got bad. The receptionist kept walking away to take personal phone calls so by this time, I had been in the chair for an hour. I began to take out my own braids. I then had to inform Selam, that I would like for the receptionist to finish the job, as I am paying for a service here. She then comes back and finishes, then asks if I would like to de - tangle my hair. Her reasoning was because I'm "tenderheaded". I proceed to do it, because I wanted to hurry this process along, but I couldn't help but think...I'm paying you all to do my own hair? I am tenderheaded, but as a professional stylist, you should be able to adapt to the clients needs and sensitivities, right? I am irate by this time, 2 hours have passed. I then am called back to start the color process. I wanted to talk to Selam to ensure that my hair was in good enough condition to get a permanent color, since it had been braided up. She basically said that she didn't know, but for most of her customers, they didn't have any issues. Not really something you would want to hear from a professional. When I delved deeper asking if she could analyze my hair (as most professionals would) she just kept repeating the same thing over and that she doesn't know my hair since I only come in 1 - 3 times a year. Okay....? She then told me that they do not have the color that I want in permanent dye. Okay...? (Remember she told me that they did at the beginning of the appointment). At this time I'm livid and am ready to go. Before the lady washes my hair, I asked if I should get a deep conditioner, she said that it would be fine without it, so I opted out. She proceeds to wash and condition afterwards rolling up my hair and putting me under the dryer. After the dryer was done the receptionist begins to take out my rollers, but it is not dry. So my fine hair, is beyond frizzy at this point. I sit back under the dryer, and then am pulled out. My hair looks ridiculous. Selam attempts to style it, but it looks even more ridiculous at this point. She said it's because I need a deep conditioner....-_-. Sooo after 4 hours of being at the salon, I am charged $60 and my hair looks ridiculous, not to mention, I didn't get the service that I mainly came there to get. I had to go home and deep condition and style my own hair. Thankfully my hair is healthy and there was no damage. I will NEVER go back. I tried 3 times to make an appointment here for a full body massage, with a Groupon. I only had a week to do this, because the Groupon was a gift and was expiring soon. I Went to this place 3 times. They never booked my appointments, it was all verbal (seems like), so I went all the way there for nothing, pospone my appointment for other days 2 times and saying it was a mistake.
