I recently stayed at Sofitel and loved Le Bar!Their happy hour was pretty chill, with late night being a bit more lively - both times were enjoyable. I really liked the flatbread that I had during happy hour (BBQ chicken is on the menu, however the staff and kitchen were gracious enough to accommodate due to my dietary preferences). The drinks were strong and the bar staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The only downside was quite a few drinks on their menu couldn't be made (due to a pending seasonal change) so there weren't many options to choose from. Cool little cocktail bar within a hotel. We ordered the oak street beach margs ($20 bucks a piece) and while they were pretty good, they tasted more like a paloma. I was missing that lime flavor I want in every margarita. Service was good until it wasn't. I think a lot of times the staff assumes it's just hotel guests dining there, so they didn't come to pick up our credit cards for a good 15 minutes when we were ready to go. We ended up asking the bar, and they were apologetic and kind. 20 isn't even out of the ordinary for a chicago cocktail, but it's still pretty pricey for the small amount of drink you get. I am a huge fan of hotel bars when they are good and Le Bar is up there for me. Of course I am bias as I will love a place on principle if they are serving bubbles. Le Bar is not like most hotel bars, it feels more like someone's living room or den. Unlike a lot of hotel bars, Le Bar is situated in an area where there is lots of windows and natural light. When the weather is nice, you have the option to sit outside and people watch. I myself like to watch traffic go by, don't ask why, I just do. Doing it with bubbles makes it even nicer. Seating is comfy and again, I always feel like I am sitting in someone's living room or den. Service has never been a problem when I have been there, the servers have always been attentive. As far as the food goes, I can only speak on the lamb meatballs, charcuterie board and the burger, as it is the only thing I eat when I am there and I love all three. My BFF and The Doctor split a strawberry rhubarb dessert....the plate was clean so I am guessing they liked it. Be warned, cocktail prices are in the $14-18 range, but that is the going price for drinks these days, even at places that are not downtown. read more

My daughter & I popped into LeBar recently while shopping in the area. It was super hot outside, so we decided to stop and split a bottle of wine before heading home. Nice interior vibe, and we were seated quickly. The place was pretty busy, but our wine was delivered to the table relatively quickly. Only issue was that by the time we were ready to leave, the place had gotten super crowded, and we had to chase down our server to get our check. read more

I had the crab cakes which were really good, and they did not have any fillers in them just all me, the crab cakes are not frozen. I also had a Manhattan on the rocks which was really good. They have a very delicious hummus and pita bread, they hummus comes with chicken peas and paprika on top. My husband and I stopped in for a glass of wine before heading to dinner. The couple sitting by the fire each had a bowl of fries, I was instantly intrigued. Le Bar didn't exactly strike me as a french fry kind of place, but after an initial whiff it was clear we had to order them. We sat at the bar placed a drink order and an order of fries. Hot crispy and the perfect amount of sea salt, these fries were amazing. So good, we came back down the next night for drinks, but this time two orders of fries. I've been coming here since the hotel opened, and have watched as the food for both the bar and hotel have declined due to outsourcing of the cooks to non-unionized cooks from Mexico, who can follow a recipe, but can NOT understand what the end product of food, other than native Mexican food, should taste like. The current bar menu is literally INEDIBLE and an embarrassment for a major hotel in the Gold Coast of Chicago!! This is the bar at the Sofitel Hotel Chicago. After checking in to the very comfortable and dimly lit rooms, it was a shock shock how bright and garish the lights are at Le Bar. One can see everything undecthose lights including the cracked mirror trim and the cracked black wood; It's time to take out the black Sharpie to hide the wood cracks. Anyway the burger was fair. I ordered it medium and the temperature was somewhat cool. The bun is not remarkable and they do not toast it. Thus between this, the pickles, tomatoes and lettuce, the burger was almost room temperature. As this is a French company, the frites were a pure disappointment. They were thicker French fries with a freezer taste. The cocktails were perfect and the help was very friendly. But the overall equation is not equal. I would suggest stopping for a cocktail and perhaps an appetizer but go elsewhere for the burger. This review is based solely on my personal opinion. read more

Chef Daniel prepared a 6 course dinner for our party with two additional courses for dessert. Not only is he talented ...but he is an artist. I stopped to Le Bar for a cocktail before I went to a meeting upstairs. I was wow'd by the snazzy ambiance and beautiful aesthetics. The room is big but feels warm and cozy. The bar has a ton of seats. The room also offers a variety of seating. The floor to ceiling windows offer natural light before sundown and a view of city lights. No matter the time of day, there's always a view of city life. The bartender was polite and helpful. We ordered a glass of wine which was very tasty and ice cold club soda. They also offer a dish with a variety of snacks to go with your beverage. Le Bar is in a beautiful location for visitors and locals alike. I can't wait to stop in again. I guess you could say that I am a huge fan of hotel bars. I dont stay at the sofitel because I live in the gold coast but you have to give credit where credit is due because they make everyone feel hospitable from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you get a seat at the bar. This is not something that every hotel in the area accomplishes. They have a rather decent outdoor area geared towards shmoozing with people you know and just leading to you have more cocktails that are in the $14-$16 range. Two years ago I brought a ex gf( we were going out at the time) of mine who got unruly after 3 root beer martinis...These bartenders are not cheating you our of any alcohol when they make these drinks for you. They are pretty lethal. Sometimes I'll just come in and read the NY times on Sunday while drinking a cup of coffee. The staff does not seem to mind. Late at night they a good "scene" that mixes with locals, Travelers from France, Switzerland, Italy and other places in Europe and US business travelers...i e people who speak english. While they do not have a DJ, they do play good lounge beats in the back round to give it that feel like it is a lounge you should stay at for a few hours. read more

Elegant little lounge. Quaint and cute Le Bar in the magnificent mile Sofitel. One thing spoiled our evening his name was James. We ordered cocktails, dirty martinis to be exact. They came out in wine glasses. We asked James for the proper glassware since 6 beverages was $102.81 and we assumed wine glasses weren't the greatest option. James told us and I quote " due to the industry and the shortage, you get what you get" I'm assuming this means covid yet I'm unsure why when there's 8 guests in the entire establishment why a glass couldn't be washed. The larger question is why does James need to be so rude and disrespectful at his place of employment. He works here, I do not, I'm a patron. Therefore you could of explained "hey guys unfortunately we're having an issue with finding glassware blah blah blah". Give us the courteous heads up and life would of went on, it's still alcohol that's what we came for. We just did not come for all the attitude and disrespect. [Added pix] The martini flight included Lady Sage (my fave out of bunch), Anejo Manhattan, and Mango Bella cocktails. The amuse-gueules were bruschetta, wonton taco, and smoked salmon on toast, which were all tasty. These delightful pairings came out to $18, which I thought was not bad considering most cocktails run at $12. To be honest though, I still think the cocktails at Violet Hour are better crafted and balanced. However, Le Bar is my bar of choice when around the magnificent mile. read more

We tried the balckberry martini, which was sweet, with an edge of lime to cut the sweet- well done. The place is tres chic, so dress for it. Le Bar: not very original but self-explanatory. Straight to the point. Much like a lot of the clientele that was in the room with me.......you couldn't have any doubt on the who-why-what for. (that's what an overnight stay at the Sofitel does to me. It reactivates the meany Frenchie in me) So - except for the fact that I was feeling a little bit, umm, out of place I really liked the space. Warm and inviting, a working fireplace (even though it was May 24th it was not totally superfluous), a nice collection of art books, luxurious color palette and an impressive drink menu. I sat my covered butt (out of place as well) on a comfortable couch and indulged in - drum roll s'il vous plait - a Backyard Blackberry Margarita. Oui messieurs-dames. Apparently pretty fancy-schmancy itself for a cocktail because the menu announced that it was "featured in Bon Appetit; magazine". Damn. The magic: hand pressed blackberries, fresh thyme, El Tesoro Platinum Tequila, and fresh citrus lengthened with champagne. Yes, that was. Good - that is. My experience with Le Bar was not very favorable. Starting off, I was supposed to meet someone here and I found myself first going to the Café des Architects and sitting for a couple minutes before finding my way to Le Bar. I finally had to ask the coat-check person if I was in the right spot for Le Bar. An honest mistake, in my book, especially as it looked like there were a couple of employees standing around, but no one genuinely willing to help. I finally made my way to Le Bar and found it a confusing mash-up of dark/hipster bar and modern Euro boite, complete with stark furniture--think, angles and metal everywhere. My advice to those in charge of the decor would be to pick a theme and stick with it. Though the drink menu seemed encyclopedic, I stuck with my classic--a dirty Grey Goose martini. This was ok, but I will say that I've sampled better even in business class on British Airways. Once my drinking companion (aka date) arrived, I found out to my chagrin that the table was wobbly, so that when he scooted in my drink was jostled out of its glass. The coaster situation was also nil, leading to a damp mess on the table. Fortunately, the bartender came over with his rag, but it seemed like there was a short supply of napkins/coasters throughout the experience. The little trio of nibbles (cheese straw type things, olives, and popcorn) was inventive but again, there should have been more napkins, not to mention serving implements so that the experience doesn't devolve into a food scattering/germ filled free-for-all. Needless to say, by that time I'd pretty much checked out of this venue--and the date itself--so I was not in a mood to bother any of the servers. I got the sense that customers were minor annoyances, ancillary to the business of flirting with their co-workers and staring vacantly ahead. Start to finish, I spent about an hour here and, once I left, was relieved to be on to greener pastures. With so many great hotel bars (and watering holes, period) in Chicago, I would not recommend venturing here. read more
