Showed up at 12:45am. The door guys said head on in, it's last call. It's a 2am bar, that usually means they serve till 1am. The bartender said they were done. The ambiance is urban chic, although they are 2 floors down in the basement.

The "Gentle Fish" ($22). Slightly sweet but QUITE strong. Unique flavor, I liked it a lot! Little pricey, but it does hit fast

Lazy Bird is a cute Chicago speakeasy but let me tell you something -- this place is CROWDED. I came early in the evening and got the last spot at the bar (I was by myself), and within 30 mins while I was having my drink I looked around and noticed that the room was near totally full, and the majority of people were standing in the open because all the tables were full, as was the bar. People were standing right behind me to order drinks; I didn't feel overly crowded by any means but some who aren't used to that kind of bar/clubby vibe might feel that way. The music was a little loud to be heard over all the folks there, but I wasn't talking to anyone so it didn't bother me (was just sitting and reading a book). The bartender was really nice and attentive despite the fact that the place was so packed. I had a drink called the "Gentle Fish" which the bartender rec'd as a sweeter/more floral drink. Admittedly it was a little strong, but the flavor was nice! It was different from most other drinks I've had, and I enjoyed it. Was strong enough I definitely did not need another though. Of note, this place is downstairs under "The Hoxton" hotel, there's no entrance directly to the bar from the sidewalk/street (you have to enter the hotel lobby, then follow the signs toward the back and go down the elevator and/or stairs). There is a person who checks your ID when you enter and seats you if seats are available. The bathrooms were very clean. Not sure about parking but street parking is definitely very limited; I imagine a paid lot would probably be the easiest thing or taking the train from wherever you're staying if you can (which is what I did).

Super cool bar in the basement of The Hoxton hotel. We came without a reservation on Saturday night around 6:30 and were able to have drinks at one of the hightop tables. Live music wasn't starting until later in the evening but the space was already lively and had great pre-dinner cocktail vibes. Definitely going on my list to come back and check out the after dinner scene.

Very cool cocktail spot in the basement of the Hoxton. Great vibes and service!! They have a large cocktail menu with lots of classic drinks and also a fun rotating menu. It was zodiac themed while we were there. I didn't order a special drink though-- just a dirty martini. It was great and they have delicious blue cheese olives.

Love love love Lazy bird and happy to say my weekend experience is just as good as the weekday. The weekday vibe was nice and chill but the weekend is definitely a lot more lively. The live performances are usually very talented. Although I've never had the food, the drinks are always good but strong and thats always a plus. I've never had a negative service experience. Always quick and polite. One of my favorite places to take people

A very chic speakeasy in the Hoxton hotel in West Loop Chicago. Great ambiance and music. Great for a date night or drink with friends. We came here on a Friday. Tables are reservation only but we found a spot at the bar. The bartenders are very friendly old fashioned was delicious! There's a love music band after 9.30 pm so the place gets packed! We will definitely be back.

We made a reservation for a table to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were right by the stage area and had a couch with a bench. They had a lot of menu choices for drinks. Minimal food available with no GF options. The grasshopper was my favorite. The music was also pretty good. There were a lot of people and they do crowd the area so couldn't see the stage. Also had strangers sit on the couch. We did ask them to leave but they were pushing back and said some very inappropriate things. We did go up to the host stand to help us but no one ever came over.

I have been to this bar twice now and every time I come the menu has new and exciting cocktails to try! This time I had a Chamomile Martini, however the twist in this cocktail was a hint of shiitake mushrooms! If you love savory cocktails-this is the cocktail! The inside is beautiful! My friends and I came on Sunday so it was a quiet night before we headed to our dinner spot.

Excellent service, fun speak easy in the Hoxton Hotel. Great place to come after dinner. Love the vibe!

I visited Lady Bird for the first time with my husband and I can't wait to return. When we first arrived the manager ( Max I believe) was very welcoming. We were sat promptly and the band was fantastic! I just wish I had later reservations to enjoy the set longer but we'll be back. We had a slight mishap but thanks to the professionalism of the manager it was handled well and I truly appreciate such great customer service. I highly recommend.

I've been here multiple times and it's a place I've brought multiple friends to. Located below the Hoxton Hotel, I really enjoy the ambiance inside. The signature cocktails are well curated and have an Asian theme to them. I recently got the Alor After Dark and it was a delicious coconut-y, spicy, bready, cereal-milk-y flavor. All these flavors came together so well, I loved it. The Chiang Mai Reprieve is a lovely clarified cocktail, which takes a lot of time to prebatch make. It's a tasty Thai tea cocktail. I've had their other signatures and they were all good. It just depends on your preference of the flavor profiles. It gets pretty busy if you come later at night on weekends, so just something to keep in mind. You can walk in but to guarantee a seat at a table you'd need a reservation.

I'm genuinely sad to be writing this, because Lazy Bird used to be one of my favorite spots in Chicago. The last two times I've visited, the once-intimate speakeasy atmosphere has been completely overtaken by overcrowding. Even with a reservation and a table, the space was so packed that you could barely move--let alone comfortably enjoy the experience. Seeing the performer was nearly impossible, and getting a drink took far longer than it ever should, especially for a venue that prides itself on craft cocktails and live music. What was once cozy and refined now feels more like a cramped club, and honestly, the crowding bordered on feeling unsafe. It's hard not to wonder how this many people in such a tight space is even acceptable. This critique comes from a longtime patron who loved Lazy Bird and brought friends here often. I hope management takes a hard look at capacity, service flow, and the overall guest experience, because what made this place special is getting lost--and that's a real shame.

Ask the Community - Lazy Bird

Are Saturdays and Sundays both walk in only?

Is there dancing to old school r&b?

Only if the band is playing old school r&b- not much room to dance but you can groove 😃

Is this good spot for celebrating valentines Day? What's the dress code?

It's dimly lit and swanky, so yeah I'd say good for valentines day drinks as long as you're not expecting dinner too. Of course you can get that at any of the two or three restaurants upstairs. No dress code, but most people in there will be smart…

Do they have live music and if so when and time?

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings from 9-12

We also tried one of their freezer martinis, which was beautifully cold, exactly how a martini should be. I can't wait to get back and work my way through more of the menu. Because of that, I decided to stop by again on a recent Sunday evening around 7pm. The second visit was completely different. We got there early, knowing it would probably get busier later. Even so, tables near the bar stayed open the entire time we were there. Instead of seating us up front, they put us in the back area by ourselves, where there was no dedicated server. We basically had to wait until the bartender happened to look over and notice us before we could order. He was friendly when he came by, but having to rely on random glances from the bar is not how service should work. The drinks themselves were on the sweet side but acceptable. The bigger issue was the seating and the lack of attention. We were left alone in the back while open seats closer to the bar remained empty the whole night. I don't want to assume the hostess or manager treated us differently because we're Asian, but the decision felt strange and left us without real service. That person should be retrained or let go. Given how good the first visit was, this one was disappointing enough that I won't be coming back or recommending the place.

The atmosphere is beautiful, cozy, and intimate, which made it perfect for continuing my birthday celebration. I sat at the bar downstairs and can confirm the place has a classic speakeasy feel -- the the basement of a place behind a locked door, very dark inside with mood lighting/glass cases and leather chairs/couches around small low tables. It's definitely a great date spot! I took off a star because it's pricey -- I got the "milk punch" on their classic cocktail menu which was $25 and is pretty small, but it's a nice drink and tasted very much like a milk punch drink I got at a speakeasy back home (in Austin, TX). The bartenders were super nice and provided excellent service, no complaints there! The bathrooms were also immaculate. Overall, this is a very nice speakeasy! I've been to many in my day and the ambiance is definitely on par with the best, but I gotta say some other unique ingredients (ideally more floral options!) would really take their menu up a notch! Nevertheless, I would def rec a visit to those visiting Chicago, and would go again even just for vibes :)

First off the drinks and food are all good. Just taste wise I wasn't completely blown away which is why it fell short of 5 stars for me. However, if you are looking for a show and something special this is definitely it. The presentation was all over the top, fun, and unique. Drinks: All the drinks are basically $30+. There is however a cocktail progression that gives you 3 drinks for $75 which helps with the high price tag. We were able to get 2 of those and get 6 drinks that we shared with the 3 of us. The menu has a graphic that shows how over the top the presentation is for each drink - which is how we picked what we wanted. Some standouts we had were the drink in the circle thing which is the iconic cocktail at Aviary and is absolutely gorgeous. Its an infused bottle that fills about 3 glasses. So each time you drink you get a different flavor profile as the flavors infuse for longer. The second standout was the 'you've got mail'. It came in a little cute mailbox and was our favorite cocktail taste-wise. Something I'd order again. There were a lot of other drinks that centered on smoke and smells that were over the top but fun. The food: Just like the drinks - presentation was over the top here. We got the giant onion ring which was actually quite giant and delicious - and beautifully presented. The surprise favorite was the chip and dip which was more like the consistency of a shrimp chip and made to be gigantic and a few feet standing up. We also got the taco (which was delicious but was quite pricey), the crab rangoon which was deconstructed and not our fave, and the caviar with nuggets - which how can you go wrong. The most over the top item was the balloon dessert which was a helium infused taffy. It tasted pretty good but overall was just a fun dessert. Our first one even accidentally broke off and flew to the ceiling which was an experience in itself. Value/price: Overall expect everything to be tapas share style/sizing (except for the giant onion ring). Things were pretty expensive but not overally insane for the presentation and the uniqueness. Its a great special occasion fun spot where you'll get tons of fun pics.

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the buzz. We did the 3-course cocktail progression, where each of us picked 3 drinks from a menu of 14. The drinks were well made and creative, but nothing wowed me. Everything felt a little overhyped and underwhelming for what this place is known for. The highlight of the night was actually dessert: the green apple balloon, originally created for their sister restaurant, Alinea. That was the one moment that delivered the "wow" I came for. The cost also made it harder to forgive the letdown. Six cocktails ran us over $200. For that price, I wanted at least one drink that I'd still be thinking about the next day. Overall, I'm glad we checked it off the list, but I wouldn't rush back. Three stars for solid execution and a great dessert, but it didn't earn the hype.
