The first visit the restaurant was crowded and busy with two large parties (both very lively and friendly). This visit was quiet with about four tables occupied with sit down guests. There seemed to be a lot of pick up orders as quite a few people came in for food and left. The restaurant is very clean with lots of light coming in from the window and doors. It's a casual setting but you could dress up and still feel comfortable. I will definitely go back to this restaurant on my future visits to Ottawa.

Updating my review after all these years because Pelican has officially become one of our favourite…read morerestaurants in Ottawa! Funny enough, my original review was from when we randomly discovered their seafood market while going to Farm Boy next door. Since then, we've dined here countless times and even spent our first anniversary here. It became our tradition and we've been coming back to celebrate our anniversary every year since. Their Chi Chi Seafood Tower is hands down our favourite and basically a must-order every time. Everything is always so fresh and it's perfect if you're a seafood lover. We tried the snow crab linguini for the first time on our most recent visit and it was sooo buttery and delicious. Their lobster poutine is another favourite we've had before and is honestly to die for! Over the years we've tried quite a few things here and the quality has always kept us coming back. I also love that there's still a seafood market attached, so you can pick up fresh seafood to bring home as well. From randomly walking into the market years ago to now celebrating our anniversary here every year, Pelican has definitely become a special spot for us. If you're a seafood lover in Ottawa, this is THE spot I always recommend.

We were able to try a bunch of their appetizers and nothing was really disappointing. We loved everything! We had: - a round of oysters - garlic bok choy - tuna tare tare - this was served in a taco shell of sorts - beef tare tare - this was served on a piece of bread - our favourite! The beef tare tare was definitely the highlight of them all! The spread on the bread was some sort of fig jam I believe, and it paired amazingly with the beef and other toppings on top. Definitely a more unique beef tare tare that I've had recently, and I would totally get it again!

This place just does not disappoint! Am I partial to Rayan because it was the first restaurant I…read morevisited when I first came to Ottawa? You tell me..... So I have been here about 5 times now, each time bringing new friends and family because I just really love this place. A few things to keep in mind: 1. The food is all served family style so don't think about the 'what do I want?' But rather, get a bunch of things everyone will like. 2. They charge by the weights for the seafood so budget accordingly. 3. If you are choosing fillets, as them to cut them up into pieces and then cook them - it will make it easier to share. Now I will go on to list some of the things that I think are fantastic that aren't the seafood; 1. The potatoes are wedges and have this delicious coating that has a crispy crunch to it. Don't miss them. 2. The salad is really nice - they have some kind of herb that they sprinkle on top that makes it so good. 3. Don't miss the rice - you will thank me. They serve their fish grilled, deep fried or fried in garlic butter, I usually do fried but I don't think there is a wrong answer here. Lastly, always make sure you get the fried calamari and shrimp.... you will thank me.

While we were waiting for the appetizer we were served bread as well as some black olives. The mussels sauce tasted amazing. My friend says she will be coming back just for that. It was served with salad as well as a side of fries or rice. I picked the option of fries. The salad was ordinary I only had half a cherry tomato, A few pieces of grated carrots as well as a few pieces of onions. The fries were nice and crispy just like I love them. We had a pitcher of water left on the table. That way we could serve ourselves. We both made the mistake of asking for water before we realized it. Free parking with lots of space. I really like The Seafood Grill--it's perhaps one of my favourite seafood spots around in Ottawa…read more The ingredients were fresh and delicious. Although the portion was not the biggest for its price (I got the paella and two spring rolls, which ended up around 50 dollars for me), they were filling, and the seafood ingredients were very solid. The paella was super delicious, especially the chorizo sausage bits. They were bursting with flavour, which really complements the other seafood. My friend got the Tony's Bouillabaisse, which I thought was delicious too (although I don't think she liked it all that much). The spring rolls were super yummy. They were fried to crispy perfection and filled with steaming hot shrimp, crab bits, and lettuce. It was super fun to eat, too. My favourite thing about The Seafood Grill was how freshly cooked every single dish was. All three dishes came out steaming hot, which I knew they had prepared freshly in the back. All seafood restaurants should do it like The Seafood Grill as the gold standard. I think I'll be back next time I'm in town, especially if I can visit the Kanata area. I really want to try their fish and chips and all the other dishes. Great service (I loved the cold water). The vibe was fun (tho there were a couple of flies, which I assumed were inevitable in the middle of summer).

The Long Version: My family and I were celebrating Lunar New Year a bit late and we made up for it by having an epic feast. Our theme was East meets West. My brother got a dinner for 6 at The Mandarin and I got the Combo 6 at Portugalos. The Combo 6 ($69.50) consisted of 1 1/2 chickens, a rack of ribs, a box of fries, a box of rice, 2 boxes of salad, 8 buns and 3 small containers of Piri Piri sauce. I loved that the chicken was already cut into pieces. The meat was tender and fall off the bone. The seasoning was delicious and had a bit of a spicy kick. I also loved that the ribs were also pre-cut. The ribs were also fall off the bone and had good flavour. The fries were shoestring fries and were good. My little neices loved them. The rice was soft and fluffy. It had a tomato flavour with herbs. I liked that the salad came with the dressing on the side. It was romaine lettuce, baby spinach, kale and shredded carrots. The dressing was a creamy green dressing. It was good. The buns were soft and fresh. The sauce was a bit on the oily side, but it had a fiery kick to it. The food was a big hit at the get-together. We got takeout, but they have a spacious dining room. I called in my order the day before and I was able to pick it up right at opening. Service was pleasant. There free parking in the plaza parking lot. Portugalos is where Olito's Cafe used to be. The service is good, the server is friendly. The restaurant decor is nice with the pictures of the various places in Portugal The food is not as good as I have tried before at the Gatineau location. Not sure they are the same owner. Cataplana is very small and the sea food is not at the best in terms of freshness, I know it is difficult to have fresh seafood in Ottawa especially in the winter time, nevertheless, it certainly can be better for what we had. The steak is ok but it is not a steak house quality, this is something they should look into, perhaps go for some fine quality filet mignon and raise the price so people will appreciate for the quality of the food and would not mind of paying extra for the quality. The owner is a young couple and I think people in Blackburn Hamlet should go there give it a try to support the local business. Good Luck Portugalos hope to see you again later on in the year.
