This is it--the perfect place for a summer meal. From the amazing food and great service (thanks, Theresa!) to the stellar patio, Layline delivers an absolutely amazing experience. If I had found this place earlier this summer, I probably would have spent many happy evenings here. (I truly can't emphasize how well this restaurant captures summer vibes.) The menu was great and ticked all the boxes, taking advantage of the bounty and mood of the season. For our starters, we ordered the arancini and the johnnycake. Both were delicious. The arincini was crispy on the outside and oozed with creamy cheese. The romesco sauce complemented it perfectly. The johnnycake was fluffy and delicious and had the perfect balance of sweet and salty (don't skip the jalapeño infused maple syrup--it isn't spicy; it's just an extension of the sweet and savory balance). For our salads/veggies, we split the last three on the menu: the cauliflower, the Brussels sprouts, and the watermelon salad. My friends, don't skip any one of these. The cauliflower is a cauliflower steak that is perfectly cooked (be sure you get a lovely toasty bit!) and made for delicious savory-salty-tangy mouthful with its tomatoes and onions. Doenjang and tahini? Heck yes! The sprouts were covered in a spectacular mojo verde (imagine what pesto would be if it were Indian and you'd not be far off) that was a creative and absolutely apt pairing. As for the watermelon salad, it was all summer: chunks of watermelon, crumbles of feta, basil, hazelnut, and rings of Calabrian chili. It tasted exactly like relaxing on the porch with your most sophisticated but still totally chill bestie. For my main, I ordered the linguine pomodoro e vodka. Dude. It was so stinking good. I love a good tomato sauce, and this one did not disappoint. Crispy breadcrumbs? Yes. Mint and basil? Yes and yes. Chili oil? Heck yeah! This packed a punch and was an absolutely glorious foil for the burrata. As for dessert, I went for the crème brûlée. It was really good! We went again to LayLine for our anniversary. We went early to avoid anyone else. Got our favorite table and had a leisurely dinner. We also had the best server ever, Jasmine. We started with a beer, forest floor martini and Pok Pok Wings with pickled cucumbers. I thought I would bypass the cucumbers but man were they good. The peanuts on top made the dish. The wings were also delicious. Next a chicken sandwich for husband and a Bibb salad with a couple of oysters for me. All good with nice touches to them. But dessert was the shining star. Bon Bon, homemade pistachio ice cream with dark chocolate ganache over the top with a sprinkling of sea salt and homemade almond whip cream. We always feel special and appreciated when we dine here. I've been here a few times but needed to leave a review as this place is truly 5 stars! Always a friendly staff and great upscale ambience for any season, but I think the food has gotten even better in the last year or so! We devoured the marinated cucumbers, tuna crudo, and roasted beats. I got the salmon with rice for dinner and was stuffed! Everyone was satisfied with their meal. Wow, wow, wow! I have heard nothing but great things about this tiny fine dining restaurant across the street from the Excelsior Brewery. Inside, you escape to an intimate lush atmosphere which sets the stage for a delicious meal. The menu is limited, but don't let that deter you! My two girlfriends and I had a 7:15pm reservation on a Saturday night. When we arrived, it felt like the tail end of the dinner rush. A few more tables were seated after us, but quickly everyone else started to clear out. The bar went from having all their stools full, to all stools available by 8pm! It got a little loud inside but as folks felt, it mellowed out. I enjoyed the mix of bench seating and table seating the tables provided. I love a good cushioned half booth side! We started with the arancini balls which I am still drooling over the next morning after! The red sauce underneath the four balls was the perfect touch to add a little zip. I would 100% recommend getting those to start with for dinner. Then each of us ordered our own pasta but made sure to try each others! I thought portion sizes were fair for the price. The nutmeg addition on the fettuccine was a nice addition to add some rich unique flavor. The carbonara was by far my favorite with the egg and fresh ingredients! The pomodoro was surprisingly spicy, but the burrata helped cut some of that - just be warned! I also enjoyed the espressso no-tini which was a mocktail. It tasted pretty dang close to the real thing and I appreciated the time they took for the presentation of the drink. Lastly, I took the banana cheesecake home to enjoy. I was sad to see how small the portion of it was for the price, but that being said I could only eat half in one sitting! All in all, I had such a lovely evening here with my girlfriends. Visited here for a friend's bday dinner and had a mixed experience. Food was delicious but service was rough. It was our first time here so we didn't know that the restaurant is tinier and there is no dedicated free parking (they have a lot but it was $7), so street parking or a different lot is your best bet for a free spot. Once we got to our table, we were informed that we would not have a dedicated server, but instead whoever was available would check on us. In theory this works, but unfortunately we ended up going long periods without being able to place orders when we wanted drinks or dessert just because we couldn't find someone. Management was very receptive to feedback about this though, so hopefully this is fixed for the future! The Eily cocktail was outstanding, if I wasn't driving home I 100% would have ordered a second one. Absolutely incredible cocktail! As for the highlight of the night, the food was absolutely great! The johnnycake is a must-order, it's sweet&salty and fluffy. The grilled half chicken was a surprising standout as well. For pastas, we loved the carbonara, and the gemelli was good too. This was our third visit to Layline and as with the previous visits the food was excellent. We ordered the duck fat fries, a Cesar salad, carbonara, cedar plank grilled salmon for the main meal and the Chocolate Espresso Cake and espressos to finish. The two outstanding dishes were the carbonara (so rich and flavorful) and the duck fat fries (every single one was a crispy salty delight). Service was slower than we've experienced in the past, but we think that was just a one-off, and the noise levels by the windows was very high with patrons voices bouncing back from the glass. Finally made it to Layline! I had wanted to go and try the burger with duck fat fries I had heard so much about. We started with the cocktail of the moment which was a tequila Negroni. Very good! The simple clear presentation with an orange nose meeting you as you raised your glass was wonderful! We ordered the burger as mentioned along with the pok wings which come with the marinated cucumbers. Wings are more like a dry rub than a sauce which I prefer. Flavor is complex. Fully enjoyed these wings. Cucumbers are refreshing. Could use more. Now for the burger... ! Everything I had waited for! Crispy edges with a perfectly done middle. Cheese melts in and bun is soft like a part of the burger not getting in the way. A hint of heat with the peppers. Beautiful! Duck fat fries are good. They are the thin crispy kind. Did they wow me? No, but good. For those who like a thin crispy not quite shoestring, these are great. Personally, I prefer a slightly thicker fry. Again, not a knock, just a preference. I went here for a birthday dinner with a couple friends and had an ok experience. I had never been here before and didn't realize how small it was! Definitely get a reservation here, it fills up quickly and there's not much waiting space. It's very tropical and airy - seems like a good place for a summer Sunday brunch. I will note that with DDP pulling out, the menu has changed since the past - it's more in line with other Innerbloom restaurants. Not a bad thing, just something we noticed. Our only poor experience here was with service, it was abysmal. We were stuck here for about 2 hours, with other people coming and going around us. We were even warned at the beginning of our visit that we didn't have a set server, just whomever was available behind the bar. It took 15 minutes just to get our first drink order in - we wanted a second round of drinks and dessert and couldn't even get an order in because of poor service. The management team was very receptive of the feedback my friend gave them regarding this! Overall, the food and drink were so delicious, rich and filling - I highly recommend. JOHNNYCAKE - Must order, like a big, fluffy and buttery corn cake! BUTTERNUT SQUASH A LA PLANCHA - If you like a butternut squash, this is for you. Cheesy, buttery and warm. Came here with a reservation on Monday evening. We had a really great server who was so kind and friendly. I got the cosmojito - a very light and refreshing summery cocktail that is the perfect blend of my favorite drinks. The calamari was nice and fresh and lightly crispy. Every dish we tasted at Layline had a wow factor! Starting with the fried calamari and roasted beets. The former was fresh and crispy, not the least bit rubbery, and came with an addictive Thai dipping sauce. The beet salad was a combustion of flavors with tender beets, pickled blackberries (don't knock it until you try it), and creamy burrata with specks of pistachios. I wouldn't have ever imagined this combination, but it was delectable. Their main dishes were also excellent. I tried their burger which did not disappoint - two smash patties with a juicy center and lacy circumference. Toppings were kept simple with melty cheese, crisp pickles and special sauce. We also ordered a side of duck fat fries - thin cut, salty and piping hot, do not skip! The seafood dishes were fantastic as well. The Chilean Sea Bass was seared to perfection and rivals the best sea bass I've ever had in Fort Meyers Beach, FL. The scallops were large and full of flavor. Our server answered our numerous questions and definitely steered us in the right direction on the seafood dishes. The indoor space has a small bar with ample table seating while the four seasons porch is lovely for any occasion. Excellent food and service with a casual ambiance right by Lake Minnetonka. This is very fun place to dine with a great space and lots of good plates and drinks. A few misses to be sure, but they've only been open a month. And the service staff is really good. The calamari and shrimp appetizer is not to be missed. Not greasy at all and it comes with a mild sauce. Very good. Also, the beet salad with burrata was excellent. The clams with fregola was good, but once the clams are finished, it's pretty boring. The black cod was perfectly cooked. The broth was a little too salty but still really well done. Excelsior needed another fine dining option! This is a *GEM* Atmosphere: bright, on trend, very small interior with a cool bar. Place currently feels expansive with a 3 season porch and large patio, it will be interesting to see how it goes in the dead of winter. The four top tables are too small if there are multiple plates being shared. Drink menu: beautiful stemware, inventive cocktails (forest floor martini so good/interesting) BUT no tequila drink?! Whhhyyyyyy. The Wine menu has interesting choices at all price points, nice choices by the glass. Food: they really know what they are doing with their vegetables. The beets with burrata is out of this world, the side dish of carrots with pistachio is also crazy good. The raw asparagus salad was interesting and fresh; Not my top item but still good. the tuna Crudo was gorgeous and tasted fine, but not super interesting. The oysters were fresh and delicious as one would expect. The linguine was good, but not great, interesting with the mint and ricotta, but the marinara sauce was somewhat bland. Service: a little uneven (to be expected in the first 2 weeks) but very friendly, competent, knowledgeable and hard working. They missed a main course for one of our party & he waited more than 20 min; it should have been rushed through (a pasta) and also comped and it wasn't (we should have asked but just assumed since he didn't get to eat with us). I don't like the mysterious 5% charge added (too low for a tip, what is it for?) Pricing: very fair for portions and flavors Overall: major thumbs up!!!! I found Layline on Instagram and I am so happy I checked it out! First of all the parking lot is small so street parking is pretty much what's available. I highly recommend having a reservation since this restaurant was much smaller than I anticipated. As for drinks I got the Cosmojito and it was alright. I wasn't too impressed by it plus I feel like it was mostly filled with ice rather than the drink itself. Next are the appetizers. I truly enjoyed their calamari and it was a huge portion too for an appetizer. Then I tried their Johnny cake and absolutely delicious! As far as entrees I got the Stracci which was absolutely delicious but I could barely finish any of it since the calamari had filled me up. Great new spot to try!! Made a reservation in advance and glad we did as it got quite busy for dinner on a weeknight. Parking was a bit confusing as they have a tiny lot with meters but if you're eating there you don't have to pay (which isn't super clear). Place was cute and good ambiance / sound! Food: -We started with the pancake appetizer which was my absolute favorite of the night (10/10!). It was sweet and salty and all the right flavors. -Next came duck fat fries which were also amazing 10/10. Great flavor and comes with your pick of four sauces. We liked the truffle aioli. -For entrees: -Lobster Roll - came warm and was a hearty portion, no complaints! -Chicken Sandwich - didn't try but was told it was good! Doesn't come with sides so you have to order a La carte. -Pesto pasta - this was my least favorite.. just odd mix of flavors and didn't hit the mark. Was also a bit spicy? We weren't sure if it was too much garlic in the pesto or something else but we didn't like this. -Burger - said this is what they were known for even at a seafood place. Was good! A little similar to a Parlour burger if you are familiar... but not as good. Smashed Pattie's, good cheese and soft bun. My only complaints were 1. There were a lot of flies in the restaurant; we were constantly swatting. Not sure if it was due to doors opening often or something else but it was noticeable. 2. Service in the bar area. We had a table near the bar which was serviced by the bartenders. Our server tried but when the bar was busy we had no service. It took awhile to order food and drinks because of this but the food came out decently quick. Just not a great setup for anyone having the bartenders try to manage tables on top of the bar. Our waiter was always there when we needed him and helped us choose, but didn't linger or act too familiar. Keep it up. Excelsior wins again! What was an auto repair shop has transformed into a great neighborhood style restaurant with an extra helping of class. A busy but manageable Thursday evening we were seated on the temperature controlled and enclosed patio. The menu offered many options to tempt the taste buds. We decided to split the grilled cabbage Caesar salad, my wife chose the Lobster Roll, and I toyed with the idea of making it two, when she offered to split entrees. I selected the Fusilli pasta with shrimp. The Caesar was fantastic! One of the best I've had recently. Perfectly dressed with a light and flavorful dressing. Glad we split as it really could be an entree. The entrees arrived and we both dove into the lobster roll. It was stuffed beyond the roll with super fresh and sweet lobster. The roll was perfect and the butter and aioli were great accompaniments. I could have easily eaten an additional whole sandwich after my half. The fusilli was good. Since I jumped on the lobster roll I think the fusilli lost some temperature but that was my only concern. Large helping of al dente fusilli and copious amounts of shrimp. The sauce is deceptively light but has a slow heat on the back end. Blistered d tomatoes added a nice pop of acid to the dish. Service was great. Our server was prompt and friendly. She offered great suggestions and demonstrated an understanding of the menu that showed great training and appreciation of the efforts of the kitchen. Definitely would visit again ! read more

I LOVE johnnycakes! Not that I've had them before now, but oh what an ethereal delight! They're lacy crisp on the outside, and so light and airy inside, with just a hint of delicate corn crunch. I could just have johnnycake and call it a night. But we did also get the creamy shrimp fusilli, which was savory and rich. I think the key is that they cook the sauce in plenty of shrimp shells, infusing them with briny deliciousness. The fresh Chilean sea bass was tender, capped with a perfectly crisp brown sear. The pineapples added a nice tart note, and even though I normally don't like endive, these were roasted to a lovely caramelized softness. Next time, I have a better plan. Just johnnycake for brunch, then come back later to try more dinner selections. read more

Definitely had high expectations coming in! Friends had been raving about Layline for a while before I was able to try it out and I was excited! Overall, awesome spot. The food is delicious and the vibe is chill but fun/trendy - neither a surprise because of Layline's sister restaurants. Anyway, we kicked off the night with some drinks, which I failed to get photos of, as well as some tequila shots (because WHY NOT). Drinks were fantastic, and just a warning, if you get the forest floor martini (vodka, spruce tips, pinecone bitters, rosemary vermouth), and then take a shot of tequila, you too will be on the floor. I kid, sort of! For starters, we got the Johnny cake, the tuna crudo and some fries. Both the Johnny cake and the fries were good, not incredible, but I loved the tuna curd! The grapefruit gave it a fresh zap of flavor and the jalapeños gave it a little bit of a kick! Yum! Dinner was family style, and we got two pastas (I'm blanking on names because they were summer menu items), the salmon, the scallops and Brussels sprouts. The pastas were great, full flavors. The scallops were awesome - they reminded me a bit of the scallops from Macanda (which makes sense since it's also a Del Prado spot), but I mean, you cannot go wrong with seared scallops! The Brussel sprouts were also delicious and a perfect green pairing with most of the dinner. The biggest disappointment however was the salmon! It was a little dry and just unflavorful, even with the squeeze of lime. For the price, I would expect a perfectly flaky slab of salmon and it just wasn't that! Small intimate restaurant. Stopped in on a late Sunday night for my husbands birthday. Cocktails are top tier 5/5! I was really excited and had been looking to get in for awhile. When I came I was disappointed by the service and the food. The burger wasn't above average, the fries were crispy but nothing special, the Brussels sprouts were pretty good. We sat in the 4 season patio thing and it was pretty cold and windy - we went back in October on a rainy day. read more

Everything is great except the food. Food is mid. It's really disappointing because Excelsior has a restaurant problem. The salmon was tough and dried out on the burnt cedar plank. I had a lobster roll that was woefully undersized and cost $25. We had high hopes. Too bad. read more
