5/5!!! What an incredible experience! Our staff of veterinary medicine workers decided to forge knives under the guidance of Lawless Forge. With hobbies and interests such as auto mechanics, wood working and carpentry, this was such a perfect fit for this group. Our instructor was incredibly accommodating with our start time since one person in our group got stuck behind a train and had trouble finding the place. Protective gear is provided and instruction throughout the course are very clear and easy to understand. We'd all highly recommend this place for those interested in forging. Max and Buddy were knowledgeable, friendly and patient in helping our group of novices transform half of a horseshoe into a knife. We had a PERFECT date night making our knives. I've never done any blacksmith work and felt extremely comfortable jumping right in with the guidance of our instructor, Matt. He taught it in steps, just enough tips to get going and be safe and successful while allowing us to get our hands dirty and start banging away quickly. Matt is a great instructor, offering hands on help to those who may have wanted it while allowing those of us who were in the groove to do our thing with just a quick, non obtrusive nudge the right direction here and there when he saw the opportunity. I personally was really proud of my end result and the fact that I did it 99% by myself Only room for improvement would be I wish there had been 4 less people in the group OR having a third forge and the anvils a bit more spaced, soley to allow for more room for following Covid distancing guidance and for the sharpening portion at the end when it was only the instructor working the grinder. read more

The class started with safety info and some "what to do if _____ happens" sort of stuff, made the class more aware of what and who is near them while holding orange-hot metal. What a fun and unique experience! I took the three-hour long Horseshoe Knife blacksmithing class. The instructors give very clear explanations and examples; plus they make sure everybody has a great time. Skip this section if you don't want spoilers, but this is the breakdown of the class. The first part is to straighten out the half of the horseshoe. Then you repeatedly heat up the horseshoe in the furnace and hammer to lengthen the blade, angle the tip, straighten the knife, and curve the handle. After scrubbing off any oxidation, the knife is beveled and sharpened using a belt sander. Lastly the knife is seasoned with coconut oil and you get to bring it home. Aprons and gloves will be provided, but be smart about how you dress still - wear closed-toe leather shoes, closely-fitted cotton clothing, and hair ties if applicable. Water is also available. I don't know the pricing as it was covered by my work, but it's definitely a class worth doing! read more
