Damascus Rings
Jason W.

After some scheduling challenges, we were able to book a session with Nick to forge Damascus rings for our 14th Anniversary. Nick is the best - perfect blend of seriousness while at the same time being informative and serious about safety. Looking forward to going back.

Had a great time in the Horseshoe Knife class. This was a really fun hands-on experience where you get turn a half piece of horseshoe into a functional knife. Don't worry if you're a first timer who has never done this. The instructor will take you through every step and will work with you one on one as needed. Looking around the class, most people needed only a little bit of guidance from the instructor. Expect to spend up to three hours but it really goes quick. If you haven't swung a hammer or been to the gym in a while, be prepared for your arm to get a workout. You are banging on hot metal and turning it into something - it takes some exertion! Overall this was a lot of fun and it really was cool turning a chuck of metal into something you can actually use or display.

Finished knives from our group

Lawless Forge is a fun and unique experience. It's dramatic with the forge roaring at you as you take a piece of hot metal and pound it on a 100+ year old anvil to make a knife. Spiff, our instructor, made it an entertaining time. He's witty, provides clear directions, and kept a good pace for the class. While I'm a caveman with a hammer and mashed the hell out of the horseshoe, Spiff was able to get it into something resembling a knife again. Great fun and can see myself opting for another class!

Booked ring making for five. We wanted to make our anniversary rings with our kids and my mom while she was visiting. The process from start to finish was amazing. Transforming a chunk of metal into the finished product of wearable jewelry was so fun! Nikk was a great teacher teaching us about the process and the metals as we progressed. There are six spots for ring making which is nice not having a ton of other people there. You follow the stepwise process to be safe and end with the proper result. It just so happened my ring making produced a HEART on my anniversary band which made it all the more special. A complete fluke based on how I hammered at the metal, how it pressed and compacted and was carved out and shaved down. Truly special and won't forget this experience! (Leave extra time to find the place because it is difficult to find)

We came here with a group of seven to make the horseshoe knife! My friend booked everything so I had no idea what to expect. We had a great time! Our instructor was Sean who was very friendly and attentive. He also answered a lot of extra questions! Such a cool experience and love my new knife!

Horse shoe knife.

Our family has had two incredible experiences at Lawless Forge making cool things and memories to last a lifetime. We forged knives out of horse shoes in a public class with our 17 and 13 year-olds and had so much fun that we went back a month later for a private session to craft new wedding bands for our anniversary. I was SO worried about being in over our heads, but our instructor, Nicc, was incredible; he was extraordinarily patient and has a unique gift for explaining the techniques and materials in a way that just makes sense. He also taught us that we are each capable of way more than we know! Whether you're a local or planning on visiting the area, I can't recommend the Lawless Forge experience enough!

My family and I attended the Horseshoe Knife class and it felt like pilates for my hand. Our instructor was Spiff and he was so enthusiastic and magical and hilarious, he had a way of making everyone feel supported and involved. He helped out when needed and was so incredibly encouraging, if you have any sort of interest in forging GO HERE!

Super fun to make a Christmas ornament - one of the more challenging pieces. Nikk was fantastic.

I just completed an 8-week, on-line, drawing class there. The instructor was great and so were the…read moreother students. Classes were well organized, and all the instruction was posted 24/7 on the web, including class videos. I have taken a few of their on-line courses in the past couple of years, and since I live at the other end of town this is an easy solution. If you try it, be sure to familiarize yourself with the links they will send you ahead of the class. One for Padlet, and one for Zoom.

The teacher Lendy was very accommodating and helpful to alternate your perspective of painting and getting you out of perfectionism. Hyper realistic art isn't as interesting--and wouldn't you just take a photograph if that's what you want? Not only did you learn a bit about painting in the 8 week or so in person course but also how high of expectations people have of themselves. We started with probably 15 or so people enrolled and the last class had four. Even if you think your art sucks, just showing up and investing time will make it better. No one is good at anything immediately. You can also get out of external validation in these types of classes. If most paintings from others look similar, what do YOU want your art to look like? Is the question to ask. The class is pretty affordable for the hours and time you spend painting as well. The main feedback I would have is a little more time educating. Most of the beginner classes have a quick overview for about 10 minutes and then you start painting for the rest of the three hour class. I might be a very literal and visual learner, but I would love to go through more examples prior to start, and more in depth learning about technique and maybe some history or introduction to artists for maybe a third of the class or at least 30 minutes. Even if it was a pre read, I would read it. You get a ton of experimentation time, I'm a nerd for learning so I may have initially expected equally technical to hands on experience. I definitely recommend trying a class here especially if your more of a hands on "I'll figure it out" kind of learning style or looking for more studio time over lecture or traditional education. Worth your time!

I can't believe I had never explored this store before!…read more Seattle recreative (the sodo location) has just about everything you could ever need for crafting. They had fabric, all aspects of sewing and scrapbooking, jewelry making, bulk paint and glue, glitter, and a wide selection of different containers. I don't think I could even write everything they had. The prices are dirt cheap: I bought 9 or 10 things for $5. If you (like me) are really into sustainability, I can't think of a better place to pick up your crafting supplies.

Somehow, I had never heard of Seattle ReCreative, but I'm glad I stumbled upon it! The store doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's much bigger than it looks. The front rooms have sewing supplies, knitting/crochet needles, fabric and notions, plus modeling clay, jewelry and beading stuff. As you go further back, there's a room with office supplies, a section of cards and stationery and paper ephemera. The biggest area is in the back, though, where the main warehouse is. That's where you'll find gift bags and tissue, floral supplies, wicker baskets and tins, paint, and tons more random stuff. The other side of the warehouse is a crafting area that looks like it can be rented out - they said they had had a bunch of kids in earlier for a field trip. You definitely have to sift through the piles of stuff to find what you're looking for, but the prices are very reasonable. I love that it's reducing waste and encouraging creative reuse - anyone with hobbies knows how expensive it can be to get started with supplies, and this is a good way to try things out inexpensively. (Or get rid of the evidence of an abandoned hobby.) Their hours are a bit limited, but similar to other small crafting/hobby supply shops. Overall, if you're willing to roll up your sleeves and hunt, there's lots of treasure to be found!
