I had a reservation at june 21st at 9:30 pm and was denied entry by a security guard simply for carrying a knapsack. When I had asked him if there was any reason as to why they didn't allow it, he simply denied communicating.
Later while I was politely asked for a clarification to confirm if it was a miscommunication, a woman with pink hair (staff member) added insult to injury by stating that I wasn't "chic enough" and that "people dress better" to be allowed in.
This comment was not only completely inappropriate -- it was deeply offensive, especially coming from another woman to a pregnant woman (though it might not be visible as I just knew it and wanted to reveal it to my spouse that night). I was stunned by the sharp, degrading tone used to make a point that could have been respectfully communicated.
Nowhere on the restaurant's website or reservation confirmation was it stated that knapsacks or specific attire were grounds for denial. Even if there was a dress code, it is unacceptable to use judgmental language that ridicules and demoralizes someone -- especially someone going through pregnancy. There were a lot of sarcastic undertones asking me to go drop my knapsack from wherever I came from and return back if I wanted to enter into a chic rooftop bar like lavelle.
While no direct mention of race was made, the experience felt laced with passive-aggressive undertones that I cannot ignore. Discrimination, whether subtle or overt, has no place in hospitality. I was body shamed.
This rooftop bar clearly caters only to a narrow, curated crowd and makes no effort to hide its discriminatory practices. I was turned away despite having a reservation, simply for carrying a gym-style knapsack -- and to add insult, a staff member with pink hair felt entitled to comment that I wasn't "chic enough." I'm pregnant, and to be dismissed so flippantly and cruelly is unacceptable which led to me breaking down in tears. I literally saw them admitting folks who had slings and wore sneakers right before me.
Let's be honest -- a bag isn't the real issue here. The way the staff closed ranks to justify this passive-aggressive exclusion shows there's a deeper bias at play. It's clear they prioritize attitude over hospitality, and will likely continue doing so while hiding behind vague rules and subjective standards. And I'm a good looking, public service employee who was pretty well dressed with a shirt from Puma, shorts from Zara, Nike sneakers and a Tommy Hilfiger backpack. My spouse earns a 6 figure salary and was also well dressed with a fashion forward Loafers from Call it spring, and boho chic shirt from Harry Rosen and shorts from Tommy Hilfiger. There are clearly better ways to communicate- "I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused, you can speak with the management in case of any queries" is the civil, professional way to deal with this situation instead of being laced with a third degree racism. On top of this, I was also charged a 30$ reservation fee. This place is a complete rip off.
I would love to get my experience out so that no woman or man of colour should ever face passive aggressive racism or microaggressions ever. I do have the pictures of the security guards who denied access to me and my spouse. read more
